Trey Anastasio Guests With Dave & Tim At Riviera Maya Event

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio joined fellow guitarists Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds during the finale of the duo’s three-night run at the Moon Palace on the Riviera Maya in Cancún, Mexico. Dave and Tim welcomed Trey for a Phish classic and a Dave tune during the first encore.

To start the show, Dave Matthews debuted a new song, “Something to Tell My Baby,” solo. Reynolds then emerged for “One Sweet World” ahead of a cover of Daniel Lanois “The Maker.” The classic “What Would You Say” followed ahead of “Fool To Think” and “Where Are You Going.” Next, Dave ad Tim debuted the new tune, “Walk Round The Moon,” which Dave Matthews Band unveiled in 2021.

The middle part of the set contained vintage DMB material like “So Much To Say” and “Too Much” along with a bust out of “Black And Blue Bird.” D&T last played the song off DMB’s latest studio album, 2018’s Come Tomorrow, on January 13, 2018 at their Riviera Maya event that year. Come Tomorrow’s “When I’m Weary” counted as a Dave and Tim debut and last saw action in DMB on November 30, 2018. Tim Reynolds also offered solo guitar excursions on “Stream” — also last played by the duo in January 2018 — as well as a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir.”

DMB keyboardist Buddy Strong then joined the guitarists for the aforementioned “When I’m Weary,” “Lying In The Hands Of God,” and the Dave & Tim debut of “Steady As We Go.” Percussionists Bernardo Aguiar and Gabriel Policarpo then joined the trio for a host of classics to close out the main set: “Warehouse,” “Don’t Drink The Water,” “Minarets” and staple closer “Ants Marching.”

Dave and Tim returned for the first encore with Phish guitarist and longtime Dave Matthews collaborator Trey Anastasio. Anastasio also performed with Reynolds in Dave & Friends. The past couple years have seen Dave & Tim doing Riviera Maya the weekend before Phish’s destination event and Anastasio joined Dave and Tim in 2020 as well.

The trio got the collaboration underway with Phish’s “Waste,” a favorite when Trey and Dave play together, to kick off the encore. Dave handled the first verse with Trey singing harmony on the chorus and helming the second verse. Trey would stick around for the DMB number “Everyday,” once again harmonizing with Dave on the chorus and offering a guitar solo ahead of the coda and conclusion of the guest spot. The final encore featured a solo “Some Devil” from Dave, a “Rapunzel” with Tim and finally Dave doing the relatively new tune “Singing From The Windows” solo to close out the show.
