Well, after hearing all the great praise of the Aura, I went out and got one and I'm blown away. Anyways, I'm tweaking it to work with my new guitar, a Martin SWDGT (another great purchase) and I'm curious if anyone else has attempted matching the sound images Fishman has on their site to this make. I have tried a few, and some match better than others, but nothing is great so far. Fishman recommends matching the wood-type for your guitar more than the model and so far, I haven't found any sound images on their site that are for cherry guitars. Anyways, before I continue in a long search for the right image, I just want to see if anyone else has had any luck.

Congrats on your Aura purchase. I hope to get one some day, but plugging my Martin DCX1E into it would be quite a waste. Once I get a pickup put in my D-16RGT I'll probably go for it.

You could try emailing Fishman to see if they have any suggestions.

I just got myself a Martin DC-16GTREA with the Aura Pre-Amp. Haven't had much of a chance to noodle with it yet, though the presets on there are pretty sweet. I wonder if it works the same as the external Aura does.

Fishman apologized for the lack of similar or suitable sound images and suggested I try the Martin images and see if one works. So far, one of the D35 sound images is pretty good, so I guess I'll use that for a while.

There is a cherry guitar model in there, for the Norman B15, but none of those sound images worked very well. The sound was too boxy and the bass was exaggerated.

I may not be able to find a perfect sound image for a while, but the Aura-enhanced sound certainly beats out my straight pickup sound any day.

I believe that Fishman at one time had a program where you could send them your guitar and they would create an image specifically for you.

I have no idea how much it would cost, how long it would take, or even if they still do something like that.

But it might be worth checking into to.

By the way, how to you like the SWDGT? I've only played the OM sized version. TR makes his sing!

Yeah, I don't know if they still do that imaging thing for you or not. Always seemed like a neat idea though, but you have you send your guitar to them, don't you?

Yes, you have to send them your guitar.

Ok, here's the deal for the custom images. You can still send in your guitar and pay for up to 4 aura sound images through their available mics. They are only for under the saddle pickups for the moment. They are eventualy going to do it for soundhole pickups like the rare-earth and such. Plus, when they finally get around to it, if you can get a good quality recording of your guitar through your own favorite mic as well as just straight through the pickup, you can send that in, and they will make one for you like that. The second one is what I am waiting for. At the moment, for my guitar, I am using a Martin DM image, and it sounds good for my spruce/mahogany guitar.

No you don't.

Although I agree that the Aura does sometimes sound better...it doesn't sound that much better, in my opinion. And for the price, I just don't think it's worth it.

If you're smart (I'm not saying that you are not smart) you can get a pretty darn good sound out of any old acoustic pickup, a good DI, and good EQ.

Look at Michael Hedges or Leo Kottke. Two very different pickup systems...and probably two of the best amplified acoustic sounds you can find.

I think the Aura is just kind of the "new thing"...

I'd rather save the money and buy a compressor, or good reverb, or put it towards a new guitar.

Tim always refers to the sound he heard when he played with Neil Young at the Bridge School. He was always talking about calling him and finding out he he got such a nice non-pizo(spelling?) sound out of his acoustic guitar. Once he got the Aura he was much happier with his sound and hasn't looked back since.

He knows how to rock your ass up and down the block, for starters.

I agree though, it's a matter of taste, really.

Actually, I've been developing a new theory.

I think that Tim doesn't actually play the guitar at all. From what I can tell...and I've been to about 10 shows...he's just pretending to play the guitar. It really seems like he doesn't know what he doing...kind of like bad lip-syncing.

I personally believe that Fluffy has been playing the guitar the whole time. And for yet-unknown reasons, Tim takes the credit for it.

The investigation continues...

The aura is for people who are really sticklers for getting the perfect sound. It's not for everyone. Just certain people have a real ear for that. I get it from my dad. He was a soundman for years for bands, repaired effects and amps for people, and now designs speakers for a living.

Certain people can sit down to a cd and just not like it because of the audio quality. Instead of finicky eaters, they are finicky players and listeners. Hell, some people are fine using what I would consider "crappy" guitars, but they think it's great.

It's all depends on how finicky you are. Me, I can be VERY finicky.

My SWDGT is awesome. There's not much I can imagine a guitar that would be much better, and especially since I didn't have to spend $2000.

My Aura will likely be a project for a long time; I like the sound image I've got now, but I'm sure I'll tweak it more when I have a day or two to play with it. I got a Highlander pickup in my SWDGT at the recommendation of the luthier at the store I bought it, so having a non-Fishman pickup is probably another variable in the experiment for finding that sweet sound. But as I've said, I'm happy with what I've got for now. The sound my Aura creates is certainly more true to what the guitar actually sounds like than the peizo I'd otherwise have.
