Anybody use Macs? Specifically, iBooks? I'm thinking about buying one for school and was curious on anyone's input. I have no experience with Apple but all the computers at Sheffield are Macs, and they claim they're the best, so naturally I turn to the best and brightest people I know!

Best for what? It just depends what you need...

If you're going to be a hard-core graphic designer, animator, etc. then yes...go for a Mac.

If you're just a typical user, then stick with the PC. The machine itself will be much cheaper, the software is more affordable (and available), less compatibility issues to deal with, and you'll have a much easier time upgrading individual parts if you decide to go that route.

99% of the time, spending the extra money on a Mac just isn't worth it...

I agree, Macs are made for people in highly specialised fields e.g. animation, film editing, music production; stick with the PC you always get what you pay for

I've been recommending macs to people lately who are computer novices. OSX is a good operating system, and it's damn near impossible to break a mac like you can break a pc.

So, if you just want a computer for the internet, word processing, and the likes, get a mac.

If you want something more open you can tinker with, get a pc.

I understand what you mean, but...

If all you want to do is word processing, etc., then wouldn't you want a cheaper solution? All that extra money for a mac is just so you can word process and surf the internet in style

Not worth it to me...

Well, students get decent discounts on them. And you pay for the reliability. You don't need some insane powerbook, an iBook would work fine and the price rivals the other low-end pc laptops.

If you can afford a G5 or a nice Mac then go with the mac. Because it's just a much more logical operating system and the G5's come with about every type of software on them you would want or need. Plus as far as internet goes you have far less problems with ad ware and such. They really are better computers. Everytime someone tells me some new thing windows did I can usually say yeah didn't apple do that back in like the 80's?

It's really just a price thing but I think that there should be no question of what is the better computer.

Much more logical operating system?

I'd love an explanation of the fact that they are "better computers".

I agree with everything Zach said, they are great computers, so I guess I'll negate what I first said and say go with the iBook

For me the operating systems are just much easier to use and more straight forward. I'm not sure I can really give a much more detailed answer then that. I have always used PC's, but I use Mac's at school more and we just got some new G5's for the soundtrack/scoring program that's starting and they are unbelievable machines. OS 10 is just such an easy thing to use especially when you have it networked it is just so much more straight forward then a PC. I mean everything is just laid out in front of you very clearly and a complete moron can figure everything out on them. Besides if you want a friend of mine as a weird expirement actually loaded and ran windows from OS 10. Besides if you are into anything like music and you would like to record or maybe someday you might want to tape a show the Mac is going to come with pro tools depending on the model you get and that's just bad ass. The computers may cost more but if you consider the software you get with them it starts to equal out.

So Mac's are the way to go in my opinion, but they do cost more and there are good PC's out there.

I think you're basically saying what I think in the end...

Just go with whatever works for you. People who are used to Macs will swear by them, and those that are used to PCs will do the same.

As for my own taste, I choose PCs because I find them to be more powerful for the money you put into them...1000 dollars will get you a more powerful PC than it will a mac.

I also like to upgrade components of a computer rather than an entire machine at once. It's a lot easier (and cheaper) to upgrade parts on a PC. I built my machine from scratch 5 years ago, and since then have just had to spend a little money every year or so to upgrade one or two things. It's a nice system

Haha, I guess I should have included the fact that I'll be going to the Sheffield Institute for the Recording Arts, specializing in Audioworks... Thanks everyone!
