thanks for the link. I had no idea he covered that song!

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

I videoed that song by Greg, too. I can't offer it to anyone (no vcr to copy with), but if you want to see him playing it, then you might try to get your grubby little hands on that video.

Maybe even dirtysloth has it, and maybe he'd copy it...?

Good stuff.

Any hikers here? If so, then this quote:

quote:

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

should make you cringe. Go to where the land is undisturbed, and cause there to be proof that you were there? That's alltogether a bad idea. The idea is to leave the land pristine.

Anyone follow the Leave No Trace guidelines? RWE obviously wouldn't.

Here's the basic idea of what you should do. If there IS a trail, then by all means, use it. The trail will likely not go away, so by using it, you keep from causing there to be another trail.

If there are no trails and you are in a group, then you should fan out and not follow each other.

Maybe that's my soapbox, I don't know. But really, Leave No Trace is good stuff if you value the quality of untouched outdoors.

i don't think(at least in my interpretation) that the quote is meant to be literal, as in treading all over nature, destroying plantlife by new trails that are unnecessary. That's at least not what i mean by putting it in my signature. I think it to mean, follow your own path and dreams and goals in life, not anyone elses or a group of people. Be an individual, march to the beat of a different drummer, don't jump on the band wagon, "cut your own trail" but not physically.

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

I'll be glad to tape that for anyone else who wants it after I catch up on the B&Ps I've already got... I'm way behind... Maybe in a month or so I'll start taking some more

Oh VFW, I certianly knew what you meant. But hiking is something I love, and environs are important to hiking, so I just kinda combined the two. I wasn't taking that out on you or anything like that. I was just trying to inform.
So I know what you mean with the quote.

Maybe we can see each other's point?

Ok good.

I love to hike. The best place would have to be Yosemite. I'm going there again in July! Can't wait! If any of you have been there, you know what I'm talking about! My favorite is Bridalveil Falls. You can climb up to it, and feel the icy cold water on your shoulders. Also, there's a pool where the temperature is like 45 degrees. Icy cold.

Here's some pics......the people here....are just some people who took some pics and posted them on the internet. Also, I've never seen it with snow before.

Wow! I went hiking a couple weeks ago and stopped by a 200 ft. waterfall... wish I could find a picture of it. My sister's friend fell from it and died about 7 years ago. She was trying to catch a butterfly. I couldn't even begin to imagine imagine that.

Anyway, well hmmmm, there used to be some photos of a place called Macafee's Knob here in Roanoke somewhere on the net. Went camping up there a few months ago... cliffs on one of the tallest mountains around here with a view of all of Roanoke, supposed to be one of the highlights of the Appalachain Trail.

Peace,
Patrick

Yosemite is absolutely amazing. Some of the best hiking ever. I'd have to give edge in scenery to Glacier though. And the ultimate is this... http://www.netsnapshot.com/pcw/buildalbum-cgi?KEY=2&ACCOUNT=5792 Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. It is without a doubt the most magnificent thing I have ever seen. It's a 6 mile wide collapsed volcano that has filled up with nothing but rainwater and snow. No other sources of water, and it's 1900 feet deep. That accounts for the color of the water, which none of these pictures do justice. For a nice little hike, you can go all around the edges of the volcano, up, down... wherever. All with this unbelieveable lake setting the backdrop. If you guys like nature photos maybe I'll upload some more pictures from my trip last summer... I love this stuff.

The link works... the site just sucks. I can't remember who I was talking to, but I wanted to show them a couple of pictures of crater lake so I just uploaded them to netsnapshot quickly. I'll eventually set something more useable up... but I have ~500 pictures to sort through and put up, plus they are all in like 1100x1400 so I need to size down the ones I will share. Many are redundant, though, so I should be able to narrow that down a lot. As soon as I have time I will get them up. There seemed to be at least couple of postcard quality gems per roll, so I'll get some stuff up, and then everyone can see what our country looks like.

Yeah, I'm mostly talk when it comes to hiking. I know what I'm doing and I'm good at it (if you can be good at walking with a backpack). But I hardly ever do it. I'd be happy to blame it on Mississippi (we hardly even have hills) but there are nice places here that I could hike, an hour or so away. I just never do.

Anyway, I'm more of a rock climber now anyway. I like that and mountain biking, which I do about as much as I hike. But if I do anything outdoors now, it is rock climb, and I don't even do that all that much.

yeah, i'm just a big fan of walking long distances in nature(well not that long, 5-10 miles) that's my biggest joy in outdoors doings. which isn't too exciting, but i love it.

One of my good friends is an adament hiker. He and a friend are planning on hiking the entire Appalachain Trail in a year or two(which would probably take about 6 months). I don't know if I could handle that, my survival skills consist of how to pop a tv dinner in the micowave and breathe, but I might go on shorter hikes this summer... say like for a week or so. That would be a great experience.

Peace,
Patrick

Sure thing HTG. I think you can also download quite a few MP3's from his site. If anyone has problems getting too my site, that's just because you guys are downloading like crazy and I'm not allowed that much bandwidth. It might be suspended for a couple hours here or there.

Peace,
Patrick
