Does anyone here use 'em? I'm still chugging away on a 56k modem, and my god is it ever so s l o w. It's almost pointless to get on the internet anymore, with all those sites taking so long to bring up. So, i'm curious, I know you have to pay for the modem itself (i've seen one priced at about $200) so, after that, do you just take a cable from your tv or have your cable company plug it in? See, I haven't much an idea on how to work them.

I'm using mine right now and it's great -- when it works. I had @Home, which went under, so I've recently switched to Adelphia PowerLink. The changeover worked on my roommate's desktop and laptop computers, but doesn't want to work with my laptop. I have no clue why, but they can't tell me either because they're Buffalo got snowed in. (Apparently that's where the people who answer their phones live...)
So yeah, if you can find a company that's not going out of business, I highly recommend it.

There was also a perq that came with the cable modem: cable tv.
It never occurred to me to split the coax and plug one into my TV, since we have DirecTV. But a friend of mine told me to try it and I did. We get basic cable, so now my roommate can watch UPN (i.e., Buffy and Star Trek).

Cable modems are nice, especially if you live in a fairly new sub division because there'll probably be hardly anyone in your neighborhood who has cable modems so you'll get all the bandwidth to yourself.
There are also registry tweaks you can do to remove teh bullshit bandwidth limiters that the cable modem software puts on your computer. That can speed up your connection a fuck of a lot as well, though somtimes they restrict yoru speed with a chip on the modem itself, in that case your fucked.
One of these days i'm gonna get cable, but as of now I sit on a Lan internet connection for 8 hours a day so the only time I use the internet at home is when i'm looking up porn.

It depends on which speed you get .... the faster you go, the more it'll cost you. I think the basic one is 640K upload 128K download. Then it goes to 768K/384K and 1MB/768K (download/upload).
It runs through your regular phone line, so you don't have to get digital cable or regular cable (if you don't have it). Only problem is, you have to be within 1 mile of any DSL router at your phone company. If you're too far away, you can't get it. Even though it goes through your phone line, you can still talk on the phone and surf the net without having two seperate lines. The DSL sends digital signals and your phone uses analog - plus there are signal blockers that you have to put on your phones (that comes with your hardware from the DSL provider).
I love it ... and the best part, you share your connection with no one. With cable, you share it with your whole neighborhood.

First off...who is your cable company? Secondly, in MOST cases you will get more for your money with a cable modem than with DSL. DSL thats in the same price range generally sucks compared to cable. Though there are exceptions.. Either way it will be WAY faster than dialup...so whichever you choose, you'll think you made the right choice ;)

I agree ... DSL is usually more expensive, my connection costs me $49.95 a month. However, I did upgrade to the small business plan which includes a dedicated IP address (so I can host my own website) 80GB a month transfer and the 1MB connection.
Overall, I'm pretty satisfited with what I'm paying for.

I AM SO HAPPY! I have finally got my Adelphia cable modem to talk to my airport base station! Now both the iBooks in my house have wireless internet access!!!
I can take my computer anywhere in the house without losing my internet connection now. YAY!

p.s. Don't even tell me Mac sucks. I've been hearing that for 15 years and I just don't care what you think.

Thank god for free ethernet at school!!! When I go home and have to deal with 56K it is the biggest pain. Definately upgrade to something faster, but if you are gonna do it, dont settle, you might as well get the best that you can.

Yeah! At school, I had a T1 line which worked pretty well. Now, I'm at home with DSL on a Mac. Although I grew up with them, I never realized how much Macs suck until I came back from school with my Sony.

We've had discussion on Cable Modems and DSL; has anybody heard good or bad reviews of DirecPC or DirecWay, which use a dish for Internet service?
Fluffy has been talking about getting DSL through AOL, but I want to make sure he looks at all his options...

Yeah DSL has two major advantages (imo) one being that speeds don't fluctuate like cable modems since you get your own pipe, and the other being that they'll let you run a web server off them unlike Cable modems where they usually block por 80 entirely. Granted there are ways to run a web server off cable its still a pain in the ass.
But yeah for the most part Cable is significantly cheaper then DSL, and more practical for the majority of us.

It's supposedly broadband over satellite. It's offered by Hughes, the same people who do DirecTV. I guess its almost totally analagous to Cable Modem/Cable TV since with this service you can get both Internet access and satellite television...
From what I can tell, DirecPC is the old version, DirecWay is the new version. The old version is download over satellite only, with upload via dialup. This is okay for most people because the average user only wants to download big files, not upload them. DirecWay allows for high speed upload and download, with no need for a dialup capability.
The two-way system is pretty damn expensive, but if somebody tells me it's worth it, I'll give it some serious thought.

From everything I have read about the satellite net services.. they aren't worth the money unless they are your only alternative. You pay cable modem prices or higher, for basically ISDN speeds.
Also..don't get msn broadband dsl. You can't play multiplayer games.

Thanks for some good info. I'll see where my next assignment is and then decide whether to pursue Hughes from there. If I end up in BFE Idaho or Montana, I might have to take whatever I can get.

I just tried out a website called http://www.speedtest.com and found that my cable modem is giving me speeds almost at the national average.
Of course, this is a low use time of the day, so I'll try it again in the evening and let you know how I fare.
BTW, HTG (su hermano taught me that), there is a Statistics link on this site that's pretty informative. I tells who the top 50 providers are. (Updated daily.) You could check to see if any of them are near you...
