There is a bill that has been introduced into the House that will give the 9/11 heroes medical funding for their illness and medical problems relating to the toxic dust they inhaled during the recovery effort at ground zero. More info in this video:

Call Congress To Support The James Zadroga Bill Call the Washington, D.C. office of your Representative and Senators and ask them to support H.R. 6594 - The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2008.
To reach the offices of your two Senators and your Representative in the House call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be transferred to their offices. If you are not sure who represents you visit www.senate.gov and www.house.gov to find your policymakers’ names.
Identify yourself and mention that you are a resident of his/her district or state. Representatives and Senators are eager to hear from their constituents. Make sure whomever you talk to knows that you are a resident of the member’s district or state. If you leave a message, be sure to include your city of residence and your phone number.
Ask to speak with the Health Legislative Assistant (HLA). This person is the staffer who advises the Representative or Senator on health issues regarding policy decisions and pending legislation. If this staffer is unavailable, leave her/him a voicemail message summarizing your major points.
State your purpose clearly and succinctly. State your purpose early in the phone call – you are calling to urge the member to support legislation that will expand medical care to the entire exposed 9/11 community. Be sure to mention the bill number: H.R. 6594 Ask the staffer if she/he is familiar with the legislation or the issue. If not, briefly explain why you care about the issue (see talking points). Then briefly explain what the legislation would accomplish.
If you leave a message: State your name and city of residence. State your purpose clearly – your desire for the member to support H.R. 659 and briefly summarize why. If you are comfortable, leave a phone number or mailing address where you can be reached if the staffer has any questions.
Be polite. Always remember to thank the staffer for taking the time to talk to you.
Talking Points on the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act
Named after New York Police Detective and 9/11 responder James Zadroga, whose death was among the first attributed to the toxins of Ground Zero
Medical Monitoring and Treatment • Continues the current medical monitoring and treatment for responders, rescue, recovery and clean up workers at the same level of medical monitoring and treatment they receive now. • Expands the current medical monitoring program to include all persons exposed to the toxins of 9/11, including area residents, office workers and students. • If an individual is eligible for treatment, they receive the treatment without any cost sharing. This includes treatment for mental health and prescription drugs. • Requires the creation of a nationwide network of health care providers in order to ensure reasonable access to medical monitoring and treatment to people who live outside the New York City area. • Provides grants to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to provide mental health services to individuals who live in New York City.
Compensation • Reopens September 11th Victims Compensation Fund for individuals who did not file before or became ill after the original December 22, 2003 deadline. • Allows for adjustment of previous awards if the Special Master of the fund determines the medical conditions of the claimant warrants an adjustment. • Amends eligibility rules so that responders to the 9/11 attacks who arrived later than the first 96 hours could be eligible if they experienced illness or injury from their work at the site.
Research • Directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct or support research on the diagnosis and treatment of physical and mental health conditions related to the September 11th terrorist attacks and report on the findings of this research. • Continues on-going data collection by the World Trade Center Health Registry.
Coordination • Establishes the 9/11 Health Emergency Coordinating Council under the direction of the Department of Health and Human Services. • The Council is responsible for the discussing, examining, and formulating recommendations for the adequacy and coordination of care and compensation for victims and federal tracking of monitoring and treatment. • The Council will meet at least 4 times per year and submit a yearly report to the Congress on their recommendations. Call script:
Hello, may I please speak to the Health Legislative Assistant.
My name is ____________. I am a constituent from the county of ____________ (or the town of _____________) and I am calling to ask Mr./Ms _________________ to support H.R. 6594: The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2008.
Are you aware of this legislation and what it seeks?
This legislation seeks to provide continued medical monitoring and treatment for 9/11 responders, rescue, recovery and clean up workers at the same level of medical monitoring and treatment they receive now. In addition it would reopen the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund for individuals who did not file before or became ill after the original December 22, 2003 deadline. This law would also expand the current medical monitoring program to include all persons exposed to the toxins of 9/11, including area residents, office workers and students.
This bill is crucial to the continued and much needed health maintenance of those effected by the attacks of September 11th 2001. I strongly urge Sen/Rep ___________ to support the citizens and heroes of this country and enact this lifesaving piece of legislation.
or:
This legislation seeks to provide continued monitoring and treatment of anyone - including volunteers, residents, area workers and others - who is ill, or becomes ill, as a result of exposure to the toxins of Ground Zero. It would also reopen the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund for individuals who did not file before or became ill after the original December 22, 2003 deadline.
As a constituent I feel that Washington has a national responsibility to care for ongoing victims of this national attack and I strongly urge Sen/Rep ________________ to support this bill |

Thanks for posting this Dave! We may not always agree on political issues, but this one I totally agree with!
Kind of reminds me of the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl. All the rescue personnel (and most of those who lived near by) died from radiation poisoning. One of Russia's attempted cover-ups.
I will be contacting my legislators I hope others do too. When something comes up for a vote it is our duty to let those who represent us know how we feel. I actually get emails telling me what bills are coming up for a vote and then emails letting me know how my representatives voted on the issues. |
