My most loved and cherished musician of all time would have been 98 today. Happy birthday Django, and thank you for the most wonderful music in the world.
I was listening to a little bit of him tonight. He was on electric and it always kind of sounds weird to me hearing him like that. What a player though.
Dave I always think of you when I think of Django! You play that gypsy guitar so well!!!!! In fact, I think it was you who got me hooked on Django's music! Thanks....amd happy birthday Django!!!
Zach his electric stuff is totally different, but very neat. I have some photos somewhere (I'm sure it's not too hard to find) of him playing the electric when he came to America.
Pam I always think of Django when I play. haha Thank you that's sweet. We do a few swing songs here and there, usually I incorporate the style into songs that have nothing to do with swing. Kind of like an inbred step cousin or something of the genre. Wait, maybe not.
IMO you haven't heard a Selmer guitar until you've heard Django play one. It's kind of like if I was to play say an old amati bass or a Gaspara de Salo but it's not the same as say Gary Karr playing the bass. So I would do whatever it takes to hear some Django.
You definitely need to check him out if you haven't heard him. He played all his solos with only two fingers as his ring and pinky fingers on his left hand were partially paralyzed. And if you listen to some of the fast shit he played, that's freaking amazing.
