GREAT show last nite in Lancaster. Crowd was noticably quieter than our last performance there but it was still a saturday nite drinking crowd. LOL The nite was made even more special by the appearance of my friend Jorg from Germany. He was the drummer in Gaffa, one of the bands I worked for while I was in Germany. Gaffa shared a bass player with Chris Whitley, Heiko was also in Gaffa at the TIMe. He has since devoted his TIMe to his main band Tijuana Mon Amour Broadcasting Inc. Jorg has also left Gaffa and is currently in Fischessen which translates to EAT FISH. LOL You may have noticed that last nite TR had Stream listed as Stribenhaben which was TR's made up German for Stream so it was nice to get to ask Jorg what the proper German for Stream was. You will notice tonite it is titled in proper German. hehe
Matt was great, as always, even though he got lost on the way and literally had to take the stage the second he arrived. I couldn't imagine having to drive 3 hours and jump right on the stage and play for 45 minutes. He pulled it off like a consumate professional. Hell, I had to park his car for him, there wasn't even TIMe for him to do that. LOL Damion Wolfe was a wonderful surprise and a GREAT guy, I hope we get to work with him again at some point in the future. We all thought he was a local opener but it turns out he is from Baltimore.

Unfortunately the show was not recorded to my knowledge. I had come to rely on Jared being there and handling it that I forgot to arrange something. Plus Jorg being there distracted me as well. SORRY. TR finished the set with Doom, didn't play Ocean, and encored with Hold On. Another unique addition to the set was The Truth into BMW's Running Away. SWEET! I think it is the first TIMe I had heard TR play it but TR has assured me he played it at least one other TIMe but the last TIMe he played it it was in D and he wasn't so happy with the outcome. It sounded wonderful in Lancaster. Wish we had gotten it recored. I think it will start to show itself more in the set. TR seemed happy with it last nite. He said he really likes that song. Well that's about it, sorry for the lateness of the post but there was no internet in the hotel last nite. |

What a wild weekend this was. First, some background…
Wednesday: night class, return home to finish my work for school and clinic.
Thursday: wake at 6am for work… go to sleep at 3am after seeing Jealousy Curve (my favorite Philly band) in Virginia
Friday: Wake at 6am again for work. Go to sleep at 4am after playing a FOUR-HOUR gig in Washington DC from 10pm-2am.
Saturday: wake at 9 to get ready to head back up to Philly. I bring my new lady friend to meet the folks and head over to the Grape St Pub to catch Omnisoul, but am stuck on I-76 in heavy traffic. Miss the first three songs and have to leave right after their set, after paying 8 for parking and 20 (!) for Holly and I to get into the venue. Back to the road!
More traffic heading to Lancaster. I am on the phone with Fluffy, Josh from PSU, and Gregg from the Chameleon club, trying to get an idea of how to get to the venue after taking a major wrong turn when approaching the city.
*W main St* … is a street that goes EAST. The state of PA is not on my good list right now. Anyway, by the time I turned around (with much thanks to Josh patiently providing directions relayed from what I guess was the bartender), I was stuck behind a jeep going about 15 mph under the speed limit. My heartbeat now synchronized with the ticking clock, I can’t pass this slow vehicle, with the double line and traffic. Finally he turns away… but then another slow car pulls in front of me again! I took advantage of some kind of weird center lane to buzz by him and once again was on the phone with the venue… “I promise, I’ll make it!”
Holly and I had white knuckles. I was whizzing through the streets of Lancaster gripping the wheel like it was the cure, and I was literally twitching. I was on the verge of explosion when Fluffy called and said to pull behind the venue. He held the door open as I grabbed my axe and ran straight to the stage without even stopping to look for traffic as I crossed the street.
I was to go on at 9pm. I showed up at 8:54pm.
As I *frantically* set up my gear on the stage (in front of hundreds of onlookers), Rew tried to calm me down and helped out with the setup. I threw my keys to Fluffy who parked my car away from the very illegal spot that I slid into minutes before. I kneeled down and turned over the paper I used with the faulty directions, and scribbled the first few letters of songs that I was about to play.

I was so hyper that I literally went into spasms during “Ditched.” As I played the fast ending, I screamed so loud to let out the night’s frustration. Yes, it hurt. I wish it were recorded. I said to the crowd, “This next song is called Stampede,” and I heard some people cheer. What?? Who are these people and how do they know what my songs are? That was an eery and awesome feeling. I gave a look for Holly and Josh as I went into my closing song. it was almost a relief to know that I had made it. I made it! I scrounged up my stuff back into the green room and had to sit for a minute to just take it all in.

Tim came out and predictably unhinged our jaws. Tonight he was especially feeling the blues. As he would tell me later, he’s been feeling the blues so much that it’s rattled his bones and driven him to strip everything down to raw emotion in his own music. Seeing our very own TIM talk about other artists and humble himself was surreal. He was beside himself talking about the old greats. We shot the sh&t about the real character of old recordings, and the rather pleasant “gift” he has of a raunchy gritty voice. It served him well on this night as he busted out memorable renditions of soulful songs, most notably “When the Levee Breaks.” This was a thriller! After starting out the night with a happy and cheerful feel with Buffalo Soldier and a few spacey improvisations, he turned on the jets to rock us all into the eye of Saturn. It’s a show I won’t soon forget.

Epilogue
At around 1am I was invited to once again play with TIM the following night on Sunday in Falls Church, VA. Three shows in three days in two states and a “district” ? Sure thing! I packed up my gear, nearly passed out at the wheel if not for Holly’s and my unscrupulous enjoyment of some greasy McMidnight snacks.

| are the shows still acoustic? i saw him in teaneck last time he was there and it was awesome, but i dont recognize a lot of the songs in these past few set lists, just making sure its the same so i dont drive 3 hours to wilkes-barre for the weird electric songs. |

Wow Matt! Amazing story. I could feel your frustration driving behind those slow cars, I hate that feeling of being late for something important. At least at night you didn't have to worry as much about horse and buggies being on the road too!
My son and I were almost in a bad accident on our way to hear TIM on Thursday night. I was almost side swiped by a car being chased by police. I just happened to look in my rear view mirror and saw this guy going about 90 coming up to pass me on the right........just as the shoulder was ending and a cement wall was beginning. If I hadn't slowed down to let him in when I did.....well, I might not be here to write about it.
Glad it all worked out for you. Ya know, putting your frustration energies into your music probably made for a better show. I really wish I could have been there to hear you and TR. Also very happy to hear you opened for him the following night! I am not surprised to hear people knew your songs. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed hearing you at Grape Street! You definitely have a future playing music!
As for the blues, man, that's "soul talking" music! I love it!

| I know this a little late, but I was at the Tim Reynolds show in Lancaster in November, watching my friend Damion Wolfe play, it was a great show and I thought Damion was a great choice to open for Tim Reynolds, Damion really got the crowd pumped up for Tim. I know Damion would love to work again with Tim, who can we contact to make that happen? |
