Well, it's 4:20 AM...how apropos. I just had the bestest night of my near 25 year old life...Wilkes Barre was an 80 mile hike that I somehow managed to turn into 150 miles on the way home...but no worries.
Before I get into the spiel, I would just really like to thank Tim, Tim, and Fluffy for being so cool to me and my buddy Phil. Fluffy greeted us at the door...he remembered me as the nut with the "Tim Fucking Reynolds" T-Shirt on last time I saw them...he led us right into the back before the opener George Wesley went on. Got to say 'hi' to Tim, Tim and George before the show...we sat and talked for a few with Fluffy while Tim noodled on the guitar in preparation...very cool! Got to present the guys with the dorky t-shirts we made for them, and all the DVDs and crap I gave to Tim personally...a humbling honor.
After George played a tune, we walked out to watch his set. Very impressive. If George were on the map for cool, he's be smack dab in the middle of fucking Antarctica. He was jamming on a steel top Martin, and playing over his reggae and jazz-influenced guitar loops with an effects processor which was making his guitar sound like steel drums, trumpets, ETC. An amazing talent...I later got to buy his CD right out of his pocket...an extraordinarily nice guy.
Anyway, couldn't get the video camera too close due to the venue setup, but we got a nice shot from straight away back by the soundboard. Yes, there will be soundboard audio, and a 2 mic-mix to play with! And thank goodness...I will preamble the review by saying this crowd sucked...the were close to obnoxiously loud...and consistently...what a bunch of shite. Anyway, Tim hopped aboard stage, and in usual fashion, dug into a bizarre delay vortex...I don't have the setlist straight in my head right now...damn it's late...but he played...not in particular order...Betrayal, Hidden Variables, a few new ones I don't know the names of yet (there is a setlist I am sure Fluffy will post here soon), Stream, You Don't Know, Dreaming w/ Roundabits, As Far As We Can See, Che, COME TO DADDY...you get the idea...
Anyway, the DVD will be around when I can get my hands on the audio (I got the guys email, he seemed excited about it) and there were a few photographers who I am sure will sharing their pics with us when they can. Anyway, did some serious hanging with Tim after the set...what an experience, talking to your musical hero about fuckin' Genesis and other nonsense...amazing. AH! I did tell Tim that we all love SMILE so damn much, he said he'll play it more...I also asked him what was up with Reliable Sources, and he said the tuning makes the guitar a little funky, but maybe he'd give it a shot, apparently he has played it live before, just not to my knowledge. Tim said he 'needed to learn how to play jazz again' which got a big laugh from me.
Anyway, it's crazy late...and I gotta do this all over again tomorrow in NYC. And the next day. And the next day...I am one lucky schmuck. Good night all! |

Sounds like you have a helluva night, Hopeful =) I did as well... the Jazz is 10 mins. from my house so when I heard Tim was playing there I decided to go, but thought it was on Friday instead of Wednesday... luckily a buddy I work with told me it was Wed. lol So i finish working (line cook @ red lobster lol) fly home get changed and fly there and made it by 10 when George was still playing. Dude it was so packed there!!!! So I go in thinking I'll see a few people that I know and didn't know anyone, that sucks because there wasen't even room to just stand and chill anywhere, especially when everyone is socializing and you came by yourself and dont know anyone lol... but yeah George was very good... towards the last few songs he played I ran into that same buddy from work who told me that the show was that night lol... so I chill with them have a few drinks and wait for Tim lol... I was way in the back when he first started playing and couldnt hear too well so I when close and jammed for a bit... Not being too familiar with his songs, but loving acoustic guitar, needless to say I was blown away over and over again. My buddy came up to me and said one of those reserved tables were open so we went and sat there... he wouldnt stop talking though lol. Which I wanted to give Tim my full attention, but I figured that if that dude didn't tell me the gig was that night I wouldn't have even been there, you know? So after the set I see Tim go in the back with like I dunno 6 people or so... So ahh, I get up walk over to those doors, talk to the guy and he lets me go back. Ahahaha, I dunno how or why lol... So I go back buzzed up and find that room with the couch that everyone was in, and someone asks "Ok is everyone here with the paper?" .. so everyone nods and stuff and i'm like "Yeah"... lol... At this point they are setting up for a picture and the photographer tells me to get on the end, lol.... There was no more room on the couch were Tim, and I think 3 other people were sitting, so I kneeled at the end of the couch while he took a few pictures. I can't wait to see if they leave me in the picture or not lol... After that was all over with everyone walks around a bit and no one is talking to Tim... now me being buzzed was both good and bad... good because I wasen't completely star struck, bad because I couldn't think of anything too intriguing to say to him... So I walk over to him and the first couple words of my sentence kinda stumble out of my mouth lol, he understood what I was asking though about his tour and playing the smaller venues and said "Yeah, it's all I believe in"... which was interesting. I then started to ramble about how I thought the gig was friday and stuff, stopped myself lol... shook his hand and said it was a pleasure. Then I walked back into the bar and get walking around a bit realizing all that just happened turned back around to sit at the bar near the door, and the guy who let me back there was looking at me with a smile and I thanked him. Gotta love when nights like that happen compltely unexpectedly... what a blast, thanks Tim and Crew! I'm gotta go get ready for work now, might not have time to jam a bit =( I hope everyone has great a great Friday and amazing weekend. And that everyone going to the show tonight has a blast. Peace -Charley |
