So my friend lets me borrow a new CD of his from a newer band that has recently made it's debut. I take it home to copy, and the CD will not rip. I attempted to rip it to MP3 for transfer to my IPOD. The files appeared to rip fine, but when I tried to listen to them, they skip and studder like a CD that is all scratched to shit. The case of this CD has a sticker on it that says "Anti Piracy Protection" or some shit like that.
So, the CD has a CD Extra feature, which I decided to use. One of the options there was "Copy Songs", which seemed like what I wanted. I did this, and apparantly the CD connects you to a server to download the songs in WMA format, protected WMA format. Since the files are protected WMA, I can not burn them to a CD, and I can not convert them to MP3.
I am not very technologically saavy when it comes to these things. Anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to 1.) Burn a CD, or 2.) Convert these files to MP3?
Thanks in advance,

I've only heard this second hand, and I've never tried it... but someone said that if you take a sharpie and go around the outside edge of the cd with it that it will block out the encoding. Sounds fishy I know, but maybe you could research it. |

that works sometimes. if you can somehow prevent the protection programs from loading up when you put the cd in, that might work, too. |

That's a bummer. Since it's a friends CD, I don't really want to be writing on it with a Sharpie.
Too bad there's not a program or something that would just allow me to make these WMAs unprotected so I can convert them to MP3.

It might help to try the program "Audio Extract" which should be available from download.com
Try using that to get the mp3s. |

There's two kinds of protection they're using on Audio CD's
One is a track of bad data the put on the edge of the disc that your CD player won't like if you try ripping (Radiohead used this on Hail to the Thief). This is where the sharpie comes in handy. Google it.
The other kind is a program that runs from the ehanced-CD portion of the disc. Simply hold the Shift button while inserting the CD and it won't run.
Nothing like averting tens of thousands of dollars worth of anti-piracy measures with a pen or a button. |
