So this past Saturday I was on my way to the store to pick up smokes, get out of the car...get half way to the door and think to myself "screw it, I quit". One of the more random things I've done in my life. Anyway, so far so good...went from a pack a day to none without even realizing it. It isn't quite as hard as I thought, the only thing that really sucks is I have trouble sleeping at night. Anyone here ever quit? I'm curious what positives/negatives you may have encountered (aside from the obvious).

I don't know much about smoking at all, except its harmful effects which i can recite. Anti-Smoking is huge in Canada, I'm not sure how the laws are in comparison to the U.S. There's not smoking allowed indoors anywhere unless it's a designated smoking room with good ventilation.

I went to England and their bars were so smokey my eyes would water and burn. I dunno how they can put up with that.

Anyway, have you tried going to any websites about quitting?
I know phillip morris' website has some stuff about quitting (hahah)
also i know that Canada just started a new compaign www.stupid.ca

Their advice will be better than mine. The only thing i know is apparently quitting cold turkey is the best way.

Tim, come to Canada!

a wise move. good luck.

the laws in the us, or rather just in new york, pretty much treat smokers like second class citizens. they don't even let them smoke in fucking bars. the problem non-smokers are apparently huge pussies. i can see not smoking in offices, because you can't get away from it if it really bothers you that much. but bars and resturants? give me a break. i once was in a room with a bunch of smokers, and i didn't like it. suddenly i remembered that my legs worked and i went somewhere else. it's not hard to deal with. you're not a fetus. you're not helpless. why force a whole group of people to deal with a massive inconvience for your own sake. oh and second hand smoke isn't a huge a problem as they're trying to scare you into thinking it is.

I completely agree, Dan. Even before I started smoking, I never understood the ridiculous laws. And I can definitely see places like work, or a Church or something that you really can't avoid...but to say that restaurants can't allow smoking is beyond me. When they banned smoking in bars here (Western New York), the bar/restaurants lost a ton of money. Now they have some "exception permit" you can apply for apparently. A lot of bars around here will still let you smoke, they just don't do anything about it. I think it's ridiculous that you can't define whether your own business permits smoking.

As a non-smoker now, my views haven't really changed. My sense of smell has come roaring back (never realized how much it was missing)...and now I can instantly smell when someone's been smoking. It doesn't bother me though...and even if it did, so what?

The taxes are what bothered me the most. $5 a pack is ridiculous. When are they going to raise the taxes on non-smokers? Pretty soon they'll be taxing people because they play sports or read books.

'preciate it. It sucks...but in the long run, I'll be better for it. I've had this issue where I'm always tired, borderline exhausted and never feel like I get a good night's sleep. I was beginning to wonder if it had something to do with smoking, because they both started around the same time. So I'm kinda hoping that I'll have a higher energy level as a result.

That's good news! It never bothered me that people smoked until I got cancer. Now it sends shivers up my spine when I see people smoke, especially kids!

Hang in there! I'm sending positive vibes your way!

The hardest part about it is that it's the perfect time filler for 5 minutes of boredom. When I'm on the phone now, I have no idea what to do with myself. And when I drive for more than 10 minutes, I start losing my mind...but so far I'm hanging in there. It's almost been a week, but it feels like it's been a year.

There's a book tax and a sporting goods tax?

I've heard acupuncture is really good for helping people quit smoking. Good luck keeping it going.

Great choice on the quitting of smoking fags. I'd quit, but I'd have to start first... and starting smoking just to quit seems like a lousy premise. I've quit fast food a few times, but always seem to go crawling back. Taco Bell is just too yummy and cheap.

Like in The Simpsons when they talk about ways to save money.

Bart: I could take up smoking and then quit.

Man, I remember a time on this board when one couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a Simpson quote.

Homer: Good job son. Giving up smoking is the hardest thing you'll ever have to do. Here's a dollar.

Lisa: But he didn't do anything!

Homer: Didn't he, Lisa? Didn't he?.......Oh wait, he didn't. Come back here!!
