Can anybody tell me what artificial harmonics are? I play guitar and bass, but I mostly hear about it in the world of bass. If anyone knows what it is, would you mind trying to explain how you do it?

on guitar on your 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 12th frets, slightly put your finger over top of the fret and pick the string/s

good music is good music, and that should be enough for anybody

Those are natural harmonics, not artifical harmonics.

I myself never much delved into them. I never really had a reason too. My buddy who played electric guitar alot seemed to like them.

Steve Hackett: "I'm my own opening act, you see."
Tim (before "Faceoff"): "Peace, love....and SEX!"

crap my bad read it wrong ok artificial harmonics is a technique where you pick string and as you pick it a piece of your thumb catches the string simotaneously you'll get a high pitch squeal

good music is good music, and that should be enough for anybody

Ya it's basically the same concept of natural harmonics only you fret a note and then put one finger on the string that divides it in half (or in a fourth or 1/3 etc.) and pluck it with your thumb or visa versa with thumb and finger plucking. So like 4th fret would equal you placing your finger on the 16th fret and then plucking. Check out Jaco's Birdland or Amerika for examples. Used a lot on bass and I was amazed when I saw Chris Thile ripping through some lines doing artificial harmonics on the mandolin and they are kinda hard to get on the little strings like that.
