<rant>

Refer to subject. I'm a computer programmer, have been using computers since the early days of DOS...I'd consider myself an expert in Microsoft operating systems. It STILL takes me at least 1/2 an hour to get rid of some of the more creative spyware bullshit that somehow gets downloaded. I've since installed a better firewall package and some internet security software...but things still get through occaisionally. I had to fix my sister's computer the other day and AdAware found about 400 (non-cookie) files/registry entries. What a nightmare. The sad thing is, one particularly bastard-like program that I had is actually created by a company that sells anti-spyware software. If I had a lot of money and nothing but time on my hands, I'd sue the shit out of these assholes.

Try Lavasoft Ad-Aware. It's free, and it rocks.

Yeah, I use Lavasoft...and it's solid, but there's some things it doesn't touch. Even rebooting in safe mode and running it doesn't solve the problem. The one I have on this machine now is about as annoying as they come.

This happened to my girlfriends computer recently too. I ran ad-aware type programs and it got it relatively undercontrol. then i tried the anti pop up programs, and they stoped the popups from loading most of the time. but i could never get them to completely stop. so we just flat out whiped the hardrive and reinstaled the OS. . . works MUCH better now.

To solve pop-up problems download Mozilla Firefox. I've been a die-hard IE user for years and have stopped using it at all once I was introduced to this browser. It's a lot fast, a lot smaller, and a lot smarter.

Make sure to download the tabbrowser and adblock extensions. Once you download the adblock one, let me know and I'll send you a filter file that will block 99% of all ads on web pages.

The problem wasnt pop ups from web sites. They were embeded into the hard drive itself. So when ever you would open a page the same adds would come up from the same site. So it had nothing to do with normal pop ups. But thanks though. Ill keep that in mind for future use.

ooooooohhhh, i LOOOOOVVVVVE SPYWARE!!!!!!! i work for OIT (Office of Information Technology - which is pretty much our HelpDesk) at my school. a lot of what i do is go and install ad-aware and sometimes spyware blaster and spybot as well. whenever someone has a case that involves their computer being slow, or having popups, or anything like that, i just think "yay, more spyware."

i went on this girl's computer once that had so much spyware on it, that you could hardly do anything on her computer for more than 5 seconds without an ad popping up. i had trouble just installing the fucking software because i had to go through so many popups first. after the scan (which took forever), ad-aware found over 700 objects.

sick. sick and WRONG.

y helo thar!¡!¡

When my fiance and I first moved in together, we ditched my ancient computer in favor of her newer model. The only thing was it was bogged down with so much spyware and adware that I almost just went out and bought a new computer. You know those things that pop up while your browsing:

"Click yes if you want to install...."

or...

"Did you know your computer clock is wrong? Click here to correct it"

Well, it was like someone (I'm assuming her roommate from her old apartment, b/c my fiance knows better) was clicking yes to all this shit all the time, b/c her computer barely moved.

So, a computer saavy friend and I were clicking away getting rid of this shit, and he suggested restarting the computer to see if we notced a difference. We did alright, the computer wouldn't start up. Couldn't get past DOS without getting this blue screen and the comp rebooting itself. The comp had Win 98. My fiance didn't have anything that vital on it, and I sure as hell didn't even have time to. So we just wiped the hard drive, installed XP and downloaded AdAware and some others. XP's built in firewall is a decent one too that keeps most stuff out.
