Ah, just play man. Act like you're playing in your room, just don't fart into the mic! |

Don't you think you better get going ... I don't know where you're from, but here it's after 11... damn what time does the bar close? Ours close about 1230 or so...I don't know anymore since I quit drinking. And don't drive! Good luck, and you should record it, so you can listen and know what to improve. Just a thought...
Yeah I think recording that is a great idea.
Actually, farting in the mic might really loosen everyone up. Who knows? |

thanks for the support guys. i did get kinda a little too drunk, and i found it hard taking myself seriously. but i just went up there and tried to 'rock out'. i played a blues jam, blue over black (my song), a drop d improv thingie i pretty much made up on the spot, and "HEREBY HERESY"! all i had was my 12 string so my selection of songs to play was limited. things could have been better, but i learned a lot last night = dont get too drunk, and dont worry so goddamn much. i was calling some friends beforehand to show up and most of them sat right in the front, so that was cool. by the end of my 'set' they were the only ones clapping because everyone was too busy being drunk and loud as hell playing pool. oh well, i cant wait to do it again, after my bruises heal. |

That's awesome...I am going to see if there are any around here, not to perform in but just to listen to! Would love to hear both Brian and VWF play! |

I played at an open mic night back in September with my band. We "opened" the night with four songs I think. I tell you. That was the fastest 30 minutes of my life. I was also unbelievably nervous beforehand. But it was still fun. |

They used to do an open mic at my local Barnes&Noble Books, but they stopped doing the music portion of it becuase B&N corporate said something about copyright infringement. Which is bullshit, because when I went, I played 100% original songs.
Recently a guy at B&N, the guy in charge of the open mic, came up to me asking me if I belonged to any publishing co. or record company, etc.. I said no, and he said that if I had no ties to a record company or publishing company, if I was not copyrighted, published, etc...what is the problem with playing my own 100% original songs. He actually is bringing this to the attention of his manager and the B&N corporate office, so it should be interesting. I'm hoping I can get back into playing there, because it really used to be a fun place to play. Lots of nice people, and good place to get feedback on your original songs, because besides the writer's group, you have the patrons of the cafe (the hold the open mic in the B&N/Starbucks cafe) who are just normal people in for a coffee and cheesecake.
Anyhoo, I'm pretty excited about it and just thought I'd share.

Ugh.......I don't think I'd be able to play at an open mic night by myself. Too much pressure. Although I think it'd be really kewl to do stuff when I buy the Boss RC-20. Ahhhhh....who am I kidding? But anyway, I respect anyone who can do that. Especially alone. |

For me its all about confidence. If I have confidence in my music, in what I'm doing, then I'm really not nervous. I just get up there, play, and sing my heart out, and I have fun, get some therapy, and hopefully get some feedback when I'm done.
I write music as therapy, to have fun, and because I love music, and that is what I convey when I'm at the open mic. And even if there are 3 people in the whole place, I still play with my whole being, because in the end, I'm really doing it for me, and only me. And if others can enjoy themselves, then its just gravy.

My son went to a concert at college and he was up front singing and the lead singer handed him the mic and said "you sing lead, I want to sing the other part." So for 40 sec or so my son sang with the band! He said it was an incredible rush. |

Albert Strange(aka FRANK) just played his first solo acoustic show at a coffee house near 9:30 Club. I worked the early show at the club and got out just in TIMe to make Albert Strange's set. It was awesome, we videotaped it. |

Way to go HTG....didn't see that one!
Very kewl Fluffy. Personally I like hearing musicians in bars and coffee shops better than huge venues. Just has a better ambiance to it.Huge venues are only good if you can get up front. Acoustic...hummm not what I would have expected but very nice I'm sure! |
