Today I had the most amazing walk with my black lab in our local state park. We were heading back to the car and something just told me to stop and when I did I looked over and there was a HUGE buck just standing there starring at us!!!! First thought: Oh my god! Second thought: He's huge....much bigger than I ever thought they were from seeing them from the car. Third thought: Please don't decide to charge at us!!!
We just stood there looking at each other for what seemed like the longest time and then I took a step and he turned around and walked the other way! |

Very cool! With the life I lead, I guess I close myself off to experiences like yours. I can't remember the last time I got out into nature. I should work on that.

Teri, no time like now...hehe...
But really, you already run 4 miles a day, do you do that indoors or what? I mean, there's a perfect opportunity for you... and I'm always reading in magizines and whatnot that there are all kinds of great state parks right outside of LA that even the residents don't know about. Those would probably be perfect!

Ack, not 4 miles per day! It's one "long run" per week. (I only run about two miles two to three three evenings in the middle of the week.) Yesterday it was 4, next saturday it will be 5 miles, the next saturday 6, etc. etc. |

Also, when I run, I do it with my training group (AIDS Marathon training program) wherever they say. My runs will generally be along a running path in Culver City, where we definitely won't see any wildlife. The Sunday group runs at Griffith Park, where the LA zoo is, but I don't think there is any other sort of wildlife there.
When I'm not in marathon training, I'm not much of a runner. I can't seem to get motivated when I know there's nobody to run with. I could definitely try hiking in those places just outside of LA though. |

...yuck. I remember having to run cross-country meets there. It had the worst hill imaginable. I'm glad I don't have to that anymore. Also, I know what you're talking about when you say you can't get motivated. I've essentially exercised my entire life, but when I got to college, there was no coach to tell me what to do. I guess it just shows how lazy we really are. |

Although I don't think this opportunity will occur for many of you, I recommend Yosemite. There are some amazing things there, like the Mariposa grove where they have enormous redwood trees (in fact, one is so large that one of it's branches had a larger diameter than any other type of tree there......I think it's 9 feet). Also, the waterfalls are amazing.
Actually, I'm sure you can just go to your state park and there will be some nice trails. Just don't go alone. |

Chalk up another vote for Yosemite right here. I used to go down there when I lived in Sacramento. I'm not much for camping, but I do like nature on day trips. |

Am I missing something? You run where the LA Zoo is and there is NO wildlife. That just doesn't make sense to me. What exactly do they keep in the LA Zoo if not wildlife? Maybe I shouldn't ask. HEHE |
