When your Picking or playing should you try and keep your hand from being planted on the guitar? I really don't due this unless i am picking something, like on a solo. I have heard it slows you down if you have you hand on the guitar. Mainly i just have my little (pinky) finger below the high E. What do you guys think?

Sometimes when I'm finger picking, or picking single notes faster with a pick, Ill rest my pinky on the body of the guitar, just under the soundhole, (or where it would be on electric) sometimes it helps, but sometimes it can slow you down, as far as getting back into the rest of the song after the part where you rest your pinky.

Hey Dave, I asked my guitar teacher about that, he said its common to rest your pinky under the soundhole for finger picking to help you get a solid pluck on each note. For alternate picking he said hits more common to actually rest your palm just behind the bridge, that way you can slide up and palm mute, still seems like its a pain in hte ass to lift up and strum, but i'm takin' his word for it.

I was noticing this the other day on the 11.10.01 TR video...TIM does rest his pinky on the guitar, right where is being mentioned by Dave Adam and Isaac. I want to say the song is As Far As We Can See or And Then They Were Free or something.

But if TIM rests his pinky, then is there anything wrong with it? I didn't think so.

u should not rest your hand on the guitar when finger picking. The teachers at burkley, and music tech will yell at you every time u do. try to get your pinky to settle next to your ring finger while playing, kind of like a shadow.

I have to say... when it comes to things like that, I would disagree with all the clasically trained teachers and just say to do whatever works best for you.

I have never taken a lesson in my life, so I know my technique is probably awful. But the way I learned to play guitar and the way I still play is to rest my hand right behind where the strings attach(the bridge?). And I do this for EVERYTHING, pick or finger-picking, unless I'm doing some big strumming. I'm sure this probably doesn't work for most people, but the way I do it I never have any problems. Of course I'm also an incredibly sloppy guitar player and I'm wondering if that's the reason. But either way, I'm continually improving so I'm not too worried for now. In fact, as I was just looking at how I play, I noticed that if I'm picking specifically higher strings, my hand is actually muting the lower strings, and I can just slide my hand back a little when I move to the lower strings.
Anyways just wanted to mention that playing this way DOES work, though it might make you a sloppy player, but as far as I know it doesn't slow me down.

Saint Jude,
do you mean just don't rest your hand if you were picking with a pick but still use your pinky, or do you mean do not rest anything, including your pinky? i'm just asking because i use my pinky to help me play smoother.
and one more question, if you finger pick with your pinky too, classical style, what is the "proper" way to pick? and do you rest any part of your hand there?

thanks

When fingerpicking you are not suposed to rest any part of your right hand on the body of the guitar. Rather it hovers above ther strings. More classical styles dont really use the pinky to pick anystrings, but more modern players do, i do, and my teacher wishes he had learned that way, u can do alot more w/ five fingers rather then four. So i hope that answered your question.

thanks Saint Jude,
you did answer my question for the most part. but what blows my mind is how are you supposed to play smoothly without using your hand to stabilize yourself? does it just take time, or are there some tricks to it? it's at times like this that i wish i had money to buy some books on these types of things.
anyway, thanks again

u can wrest your forarm on the edge of the guitar, thats the best way to do it and not have your hand itself resting on the guitar.

Hahaha! Just razzing ya. But I suggest that you don't mention that band or their "singer" again......you might get killed.

I had never thought about it until now... but as I play something I'm realizing that I play 'classical style' guitar. Groovy stuff.

Watch Lindsey Buckingham play Landslide, he plants his pinky there below the soundhole.
