A few days ago one of my best friends, Abe, was robbed of his cd collection. it consited of nearly $1000 dollars worth of CDs ( Lots of money when you are 15) and close to 100 albums. It truly does suck for him, as he had a number of rare CDs and out-of-print albums. What do you guys think we should do aboot this? |

That really sucks! Even for someone my age which is much, much, much ...more than 15 it is a lot of money. You got to the real point though and that is a collection of cd's is valuable because it represents years of selection and personal memories. My collection has new, rare and imports like your friend's and many of my cd's are remasters of my record albums....yes I am that old that I have a huge record collection, most of which are not in the greatest condition from being played to death. I even have a collection of 45's one of which is a Beatles song from the movie "Eight Arms to Hold You" which was later released as "Help".
As for what to do, he should report it to the police. Where did it happen? If out of his house, which is what I'm asuming, he may be able to get money from his parents home owners insurance. He might be able to collect even if it was somewhere else. There is usually a $500 deductable but at least he could buy some replacements. It really depends on his parents insurance policy.
Chances of getting back any of his collection are slim to none, but if there are any small record shops that deal in used CD's where your friend lives I would get the word out to them that a collection was stolen. Your friend should probably make a list of all the cd's as well.

THanks! I have to call him and tell him to go to the cops...he'll probably say no cause he doesn't like cops, but at least it could get him some replacements. |

Does he have insurance (renter's or home owner's)?
My renter's insurance covers theft and I have used it twice: once when my gym bag was stolen out of my car and once when my bike was stolen out of my garage. I think if a a large number of my CDs had been stolen, I might have had to supply receipts or some sort of proof that I owned them all. I have no idea how I would do that. Maybe I should videotape my collection... |

I've considered for a long time (a couple of years) videotaping all my stuff. You think that's a good idea and would it be proof of ownership and all that? And how often is that done and used?
I'm voting yes for you to do a marathon. |

That sucks about your friend Jay. I can totally sympathize as many of our personal CD's were stolen when we were robbed. Certainly not the amount your friend lost but I am sure it is the same feeling of violation. It sucks, move on, can't cry over spilt milk. |
