it seems to me that aragorn married his cousin.

elrond, arwen's father, had a brother named elros, who was the first king of numenor. and unless i'm reading wrong, aragorn is a direct decendant of the kings of numenor, and thus related directly to elros. that makes elrond his uncle and arwen his cousin. gross.

we're ignoring the fact that the heir to the world of men is inbred in a big way.

Yep, it was a song first:

I'm my own grandpa... I'm my own grandpa,
It sounds funny, I know, but it really is so,
I'm my own grandpa.

Now, many, many years ago when I was 23,
I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be;
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red,
My father fell in love with her and soon the two were wed;
This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life,
My daughter was now my mother 'cause she was my father's wife.

To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy;
My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad,
And, so, became my uncle though it made me very sad;
For if he was my uncle then that also made him brother,
Of the widow's grown-up daughter who, of course, was my step-mother.

I'm my own grandpa... I'm my own grandpa,
It sounds funny, I know, but it really is so,
I'm my own grandpa.

Father's wife then had a son that kept him on the run,
Now he became my brother, for he was my father's son;
My wife was now my mother's mother and it makes me blue,
Because although she is my wife, she's my grandmother, too;
Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grand-child,
For every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild;
And now I have become the strangest case you ever saw,
As the husband of my own grandmother; I'm my own grandpa.

I'm my own grandpa... I'm my own grandpa,
It sounds funny, I know, but it really is so,
I'm my own grandpa.

Moe Jaffe and Dwight Latham, 1947.
Based On A Mark Twain Anecdote.

yeah, i already posted my bombadil theory here. go find it if you want to see it.

demi-god? there are no gods in middle earth or valinor. there are the valar (which men did sometimes mistakenly call gods) and the maiar. in truth, both are more like angelic beings than gods.

It could be a lot worse. There are people who write essays about the potential background on characters. I saw one on Tom Bombadil and how he is a demi-god.

I agree. But it was more than twenty; Aragorn was a descendant of Elrond's brother Elros through at least thirty-nine generations. (Becuase Aragorn was the 39th in the line of Isildur, who was a few generations himself removed from Elros, but I can't find any references to how many...)

One of my friends told me that it's okay with third cousins or later, but maybe he was trying to convince himself more than me.

yeah, made a great movie though "Great Balls of Fire"
