I wanted to start a new thread that was stemming from a conversation starting in this post: http://www.timreynolds.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3161

Basically, I'm thinking of a setlist of songs to play on the radio that have an anti-war/pro-peace theme... aside from the ones that have been mentioned (thanks guys... Billy Bragg and Bob Dylan were on my list) here are a few I can think of...

Rage Against the Machine: War with in a Breath
System of a Down: BOOM
Peter Gabriel: Games without Frontiers
Ryan Adams: Nuclear
TR: Eiher Donkey Bong or Indoctrinate
damn, I know there were a LOT more I had in mind, but I'm drawing a big fat blank at the moment... must be time for bed.. GOODNIGHT and feel free to list any songs you can think.

lots of people couldn't. this is because they're paying too much attention to the message, not the music. i glean from your short post that you agree with his messages. if you didn't agree with his leftist views, you'd agree with my assesment of his music. for some reason, people can't seem to do both. probably because they feel that they have to stick by someone who shares their views, no matter if the artist is talented. bob dylan is an excellent songwriter. his lyrics are very good. his musical abilities are neither.

music over message.

couldn't disagree more dan

bob dylan sucks. he can't sing and he can't play guitar. he should have been a writer instead of shitting all over music.

here is another story about artists joining the anti-war movement. They mention Peter Gabriel and Dave Matthews at the end of the story.

I ended up printing it out too Kevin. Easier to read and I don't have to hog the computer. Didn't expect it to be 6 pages but what the hey. Interesting, going off to read it now!
KevinLesko Posted - 02/28/2003 : 3:23:01 PM
Thanks Fluffy, I'm printing that out right now so I can bring it to work with me... I'm working with my coworker Sarah who is helping me with my list, so I'm sure that she will appreciate the read as well, even though it will probably get her all riled up as I am now. I had forgotten about that post 9-11 ban which was such bullshit. Wasn't TR one of the first to play Imagine? Anyways, thanks for the link!
Fluffy Posted - 02/28/2003 : 3:09:41 PM
Hey Kev, Thought you might me interested in this story. It is long, so I doubt anyone else will take the TIMe. As I have learned from my OBVIOUS mistakes, I will not post the entire story here, just the link, as I would rather not be flamed or intimidate everyone with a bunch of scary words.

IS PROTEST MUSIC DEAD?

listed above : justheard this song on the raaaaaadio, here're the lyrics

War -- Edwin Starr

Oh no-there's got to be a better way
Say it again
There's got to be a better way-yeah
What is it good for?
*War has caused unrest
Among the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die?
War-huh
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War-huh
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Yeah
War-I despise
'Cos it means destruction
Of innocent lives
War means tears
To thousands of mothers how
When their sons go off to fight
And lose their lives
I said
War-huh
It's an enemy of all mankind
No point of war
'Cos you're a man
*(Repeat)
Give it to me one time-now
Give it to me one time-now
War has shattered
Many young men's dreams
We've got no place for it today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord, there's just got to be a better way
It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
War
War
War-Good God, now
Now
Give it to me one time now
Now now
What is it good for?

and the big daddy of them all:

Barry McGuire "Eve of Destruction"

The Eastern World
It is explodin'
Violence flarin'
Bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill
But not for votin'
You don't believe in war
But what's that gun you're totin'
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'

But you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say
And can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save
With the whole world in a grave
Take a look around you boy,
It's bound to scare you boy

And you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Yeah, my blood's so mad
Feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth
It knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world
Is just too frustratin'

And you tell me over, and over, and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

And think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Ah you may leave here for four days in space
But when you return it's the same old place
The poundin' of the drums
The pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace

But you tell me over, and over, and over, and over again my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
No, no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

After work last night, (where my coworker played me this cd) I can add pretty much any song from Fugazi's new cd "Argument" especially the title track. I really dug this disc.

I am a big fan of whirled peas, they don't get green stuff stuck in your teeth! HEHE Who wants green stuff stuck to your teeth, SUPPORT WHIRLED PEAS!!!

T&d had some good ones that I would like to second:

FGTH Two Tribes
Edwin Starr War
XTC Generals & Majors

and add, it may be a stretch, but I think it fits nonetheless:

War Why Can't We Be Friends
Fluffy Posted - 02/13/2003 : 7:26:40 PM
Simon & Garfunkel Bridge over Troubled Water
John Lennon Imagine
Neil Young After the Gold Rush
Elvis Costello What's So Funny bout Peace Love and Understanding
(although it has been covered by many people)
Billy Bragg Price of Oil

Spacemonkey added elsewhere:

Masters of War Bob Dylan

There is also a great version of this by Eddie Vedder from the 30th Ann. Dylan Tribute I think.

Oh ya, another Marley peace song is "One Love", and an anti-war one is "Buffolo Soldier". Sorry for the multiple posts I just keep coming up with more Marley songs. Don't be supprised if I think of more.
thomasode Posted - 02/12/2003 : 9:40:12 PM
I almost forgot "Get Up,Stand Up", but I don't know if that would be a "peace song" but it could be considered one.
KevinLesko Posted - 02/12/2003 : 12:05:04 AM
