So, this is meant to inspire a little chatter among the boards. We've come to a little lull again. This thread's along the lines of "Getting to Know You" threads.
What do you do for work?
I'll kick this off:
Currently, I have the luxury and pleasure of working at Trader Joes. Trader Joes is an expanding, national grocery chain. We're small stores that offer a lot of organic foods, along with wild caught fish, free range chickens, grassfed beef, etc, etc. We also have a lot of products that are vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free. The particulars of my job include the typical stocking shelves, dealing with customers, etc. |

So Cool Ben! I love Trader Joes, but we don't have one very close to us so I rarely get to shop there. Same with Whole Foods, there are none in my area. I like Trader Joes much better than Whole Foods.
As for me, I am learning support for special education students in regular ed classes at a middle school. I work with 9th graders exclusively this year. Next year the 9th grade moves to our high school which is being built. I am not sure if I will move to the high school with them or stay in the middle school which will have grades 6-8. I "belong" to the district so they can put me where they want. Since I make good money and have great benefits I will go wherever they want me.
I love my job. The kids are awesome and I love the subjects.I go in the regular ed classrooms with my students. My students have various learning disabilities. My day includes two Physical Science classes with different teachers, Algebra, English (currently doing Romeo & Juliet) Social Studies (just finished progressive era next WWI) and two resource classes. That is where I help the kids with whatever it is that they need help with. I help them with their homework or classwork that they are having trouble with. (Algebra & Social Studies are my favorite classes.)
The only down side is having the summer off, which everyone thinks is great, but I need more income so it is a pain looking for summer jobs. I worked a couple of summers with "at risk" kids but that is a state funded program and is not offered every year. Not sure what I will get this year. |

That's great Pam. You basically describe the spiritual benefits of working with kids, particularly special needs children. I've spent the last two summers working with little ones, pre-schoolers the first summer and second graders the second. I've also spent a lot of time in and around my mother's classroom, she's a second grade teacher. You have to work so hard and directly with special needs kids it makes every victory, however "small" it seems, extremely rewarding. Every little gain in skill and knowledge makes it worthwhile. |

Trader Joe's has very poor sustainability ratings compared to Whole Foods, however. Just FOOD for thought.
I'll chime in here later on, not that anyone gives a poo. |

Yeah, but Whole Foods has a terrible record in regards to its employees. With TJs I've never worked for a company that took such good care of its workers. If you work twenty hours a week or more, you are entitled to health benefits: medical, dental, and optical. They contribute annually to your retirement fund, to the tune of 15% of your gross earnings. You start accumulating paid time off after six months of employment. They are great with transfers and different kinds of leaves of absence.

I work in the annuities division of an insurance company. I do training for both new and existing employees, create and write procedures, and many other things.
My wife and I love Trader Joe's and we go there and buy a ton of stuff every time we're in a town that actually has one. We have a co-op here that has some stuff but Trader Joe's is great. |

Really? That's interesting. Maybe that is why Whole Foods is more expensive than Trader Joes?

Actually I DO give a poo, or damn or insert whatever word you want. I find it interesting to hear what people do.
I wish pcbTIM would post here. I think he has a pretty interesting job. I need to IM him and find out how he is doing.
GuitarGuy305, I think my son does the same thing you do.

As you all know, I am on Disability now, so I don't and can't work too much (if I earn too much money, I lose my insurance). However, I do work. I work for my Aunt and Uncle. They own a contracting business. They have trouble with filing, so that's where I come in. I go over to their office at least once a week. I mainly take their big stack of papers and sort them all out. Decide what to keep and throw away, make copies of certain papers, and decided which files to file everything in, and all such things. |

I work for a very small family-owned company called Stone Harbor Pools. We do openings, closings, renovations, service, etc. Anything 'cept build em, really, though my boss has in the past.
Yes, I'm a pool boy.
I pretty much coordinate all the service routes, and handle most of the hard labor involved with prepping an old in-ground pool for renovation, jack-hammering and such. As well as do the openings, closings, and service. This will be my 8th year. Dear God.
Nice to work outside. In fact, will prolly work outdoors for the rest of my days. LONG summer hours, but get a nice chunk of time in the winter to relax.
Hope to start my own business soon. Definitely not pool-related. AHAHA |

We have a winner! Kevin how bad does it suck? I hate that feeling when you can't stand going to work(or knowing you're about to do something that you really don't want to do) in the morning. Is it painful or is there some comedic value you could share with us? |

I don't think Kevin still works for Virgin.
Nice to know what you do Silky. If I open my music venue, I am calling you to design the webpage! I want this so bad, every time I pass the building, which is almost daily, I can picture my dream happening!
I could probably employ a lot of folks from this board. First I have to get the owners to sell. Kills me because is has been empty for a long time. I have such great ideas for it. Location is perfect. Right around the corner from a guitar center too. Along business Rt 1, mins from I-95, great area, parking, new building, just needs some renovation to convert from restaurant to music venue. I know folks who could do that, also a chef. Want to partner for intern programs with local community college. It could be awesome! |

If it happens Dave, you will be one of the first people to know especially since I would want you and your band to perform there!
I too am in the "snow," but my street was plowed so I am not snowed in. I love it. I have honey whole wheat (organic)raisin bread rising as I type this. Love to bake and snow ALWAYS makes me want to bake!

What's this "snow" thing you keep talking about? Is it like the cloudy weather we are having in CA today?
Pam, that sounds like an awesome dream! Keep it in your heart and I hope the particulars come together. That'd be worth an East Coast road trip! |

The east coast got hit with a relatively big snowstorm. Even my daughter in Chapel Hill NC said they got about 4 inches! Crazy weather, but March is supposed to come "in like a lion" so I guess it did!

I apologize for not making my sarcasm more clear. The snow storms were one of the biggest stories even here on the West Coast. I was just thankful to be living in an area that hasn't seen snow since the last major ice age. |

Overpriced? It's one of the cheapest pizza shops in my town. Eight bucks for a large? I'll take it. |

True, we do have some good deals/coupons. But the menu price of it is ridiculous, IMO. We charge 2 bucks for delivery too |

Austin has some amazing NY-style pizza (who would thunk it?). Home Slice Pizza is the best in town.
Eggplant Parm? Check.
Sausage, Ricotta, Roasted Red Pepper? Check.
White Clam Pizza? Check.
But their plain old cheese pizza is the best. |

worked at a grocery store? yeah, i worked at a grocery store. i reigned over customer and co-worker alike, presiding over a court of misery. i received complaints, yes, and woe betide those unfortunate souls. dark words beget dark blades and dark night, and dark fates for those who moved against me. |

I've worked at 3 different grocery stores. The first one was Kohls, which I worked at when I was in highschool for the fall. It was quite nice and relaxing. I worked in the produce department, and closed up every night. Rotating the products, unloading sacks of potatoes, and taking care of the salad bar. Word to the wise, do NOT eat out of the salad bar at a grocery store!! Soups are normally fine since they tend to come out of a pre-made package and you just heat them up. But the other stuff could have been put out several times during the week. It helped me pay for my De Armond Guild X-135 http://www.elderly.com/items/images/40U/40U-3419_front.jpg
Then after highschool, I started working at another grocery store. It was a nightmare. The store manager was one of the worst two faced person I have ever met! The only person that could make him back off was . . . my MOM! Boy, she could intimidate the hell out of him! So after 2 horrible years, I said, FUCK YOU, and headed to another grocery store . . . which wasn't much better. Both stores also wrecked havoc on my mental and physical problems. So I moved to a kind of hardware/do it yourself store called Menards (similar to Home Depot) and best not go into that nightmare. |

I worked for 5 years with the Virgin Entertainment Group, everything from a Store Manager, to a product manager, to a DVD buyer. Unfortunatley there wasn't much of a future in the music industry, so I made the choce to leave in mid-07. Just last week it was announced that the company will fold completely this summer.
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=7000356
Little did I know that two short years later the whole nation's job market would be so weak. Currently I am a sales manager for Borders Books. The company has recently fired just about everyone they can, and cut every corner possible. They are trying to remain opperating with a bare-bones crew in effort to become profitable once again. In other words, it is an impossible work environment because they are not operational under these conditions. I hate it, and I'm looking for work elsewhere, but it is a bleek market out there. I recently did apply to Trader Joe's I think it is awesome that you work there Arthen! I've heard nothing but great things. I'm even considering trying out for the Police. I guess it is a big question mark right now. |
