Dave & Obama's Inauguration = oxymoron

Wonder how many are going because it means something to them and how many are going so they can say they were there? Whatever.

I'm going to report on it! Man this feels just like 2000 all over again!

The only troubling thing is the medias obsession with comparing the great Martin Luther King to Obama. I'm sorry boys and girls but Obama is no MLK. Maybe in time he'll prove the nay sayers wrong and become as powerful and peaceful. The only thing I know is that Martin Luther King would never send troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. He'd bring them home tomorrow. The reason why the Bush Administration was able to get away with what they did was because they had an army of supporters who would look away at the deceit and lies. An army of supporters who would attack and slander anyone who opposed him and his fascist policies. Lets not make the same mistake again, and again. If Obama brings the troops home and stops military spending I will jump up and down and applaud him, if he continues the wars of aggression and sends the Guantanamo inmates to just another secret prison camp, continues torturing and wiretapping, then I will be in the streets opposing him, because that's how I feel and that's what I do.

I wish Obama luck and I have hope that he holds the Bush Administration accountable for what they have done. If not, this is going to be a long 8 years of more of the same. Either way at least we have an African American president, but even thinking in that positive of fashion is still racist. Ahh this world is crazy.

Time will tell and actions will tell, not rhetoric, hype and propaganda. The truth shall set us free. Let's just hope he provides trasnparency. And if people don't hold Obama to the same fire they held Bush too then this country is back to where it started 8 years ago and have learned nothing from the great American tragedy of the Bush Administration.

I'll end with a quote from the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr...
"Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can't ride you unless your back is bent."

The saddest people are the ones going down there to get drunk. Is this really a time to celebrate? I think not. We can celebrate when Bush & crew is held accountable. I mean this is a TAXPAYER FUNDED $150 million dollar party. The biggest ever. That's a HUGE chunk of CHANGE I can believe in!

That amount of money is required because so many citizens are choosing to take part in the ceremony, estimates vary but the highest I've heard is 2 million. I've never seen so many people interested in an inauguration, which I find refreshing. I hope this interest in the activities of the government continues. It's much more refreshing than blatant lethargy.

it isn't racist to appreciate that we have a black person as president. it can be a vehicle of further social change as far as racism in america goes. that is objectively good. also, it's historically interesting. 200 years ago, black people were slaves. now one is heading up the executive branch. that says much about america culturally and socially. i don't see how noting any of this is racist.

you mention it being expensive to taxpayers, and here's what's funny about that: you're actually going down there. yes, you're paying but you're also making use of the shit you're paying for. so where exactly is your issue? you're part of the reason it's so expensive to begin with. i'm not going down there, and yet, as a taxpayer, i'm paying for it, too. so why are you the one that's upset here?

people are interested in obama, and they're getting interested in government again. with a heavy amount of attention being paid, transparency is sort of inevitable. people not paying attention is what got us into this mess in the first place.

HRW probably knows for sure, but I'm fairly certain you are not a racist.

You thinking that you are a racist, because you feel like you're somehow patronizing Obama, doesn't count. Don't fall for that white=power=racist bullshit.

no no no I meant that the only thing I am happy about is that an African American is now president, and SOME many consider that thinking racist. I mean shit I voted for Cynthia McKinney, an African American FEMALE candidate! Hopefully one day, no one will see colors, but by the time we actually reach that, people will hate other beings from other planets because they look different. Haha.

Anyway trip was great and we got alot of great interviews! Too tired to go into detail now more tomorrow!

i don't think people will ever not see color, provided that you grow up around primarily once race of people. we draw on, and determine normalcy by, our upbringing and social training. a white person growing up around primarily white people will notice that black person is black. how the white person responds to that is another story.

I am color blind to skin color. I never knew it growing up, and had to have it pointed out to me when I was 5. When someone said that someone was black, I didn't know what they were talking about. I had to have skin color pointed out to me.

I even hate saying the words black and white.

Not communicating can hurt more than any word that can be said -

i know, i'm not comfortable with a woman in that sort of job, either. we just gotta buckle up.

i'm not sure who's saying everything will be ok. no one here, certainly, and i didn't make any such suggestion either. when was the last time everything was ok?

"the media" isn't selling obama dvds, and i find such a statement to reflect a remarkably obtuse conception of what "the media" is.

Oh for fuck sake, Dan. You've gotta be shitting me. Maybe I'm a bit cynical but there's a reason 'news media' is such reactionary garbage. It's because they are pwned. I'll do some research into who released said Obama DVD and get back to you, Palin style (except I'll do it).

well then it's not really palin-style.

tv news media is garbage because tv is not a format that lends itself to decent coverage of anything. print news media is much better. there's a fair share of garbage print news media, but there is also a lot good coverage, if you take the time to actually read it.

the problem with news media overall is that most of the outlets are owned by only a handful of people. this problem was exacerbated by legislation pushed through by the clinton administration.

you seem to be waiting in the wings for something bad to happen so can show everyone he's just as bad as whoever. what you seem not to realize it that not everything changes suddenly. he's been in office how long? 4 days? and you're telling us how no change has happened?

Pakistan? Could this be a good place to start? The chance has already been had to make a positive change, from day 1. It's already being swept under the rug.

So until these changes come, Dan, we'll keep pointing out how the same it is.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jan/24/pakistan-barack-obama-air-strike

President orders air strikes on villages in tribal area

Barack Obama gave the go-ahead for his first military action yesterday, missile strikes against suspected militants in Pakistan which killed at least 18 people.

Four days after assuming the presidency, he was consulted by US commanders before they launched the two attacks. Although Obama has abandoned many of the "war on terror" policies of George Bush while he was president, he is not retreating from the hunt for Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaida leaders.

The US believes they are hiding in the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan, and made 30 strikes last year in which more than 200 people were killed. In the election, Obama hinted at increased operations in Pakistan, saying he thought Bush had made a mistake in switching to Iraq before completing the job against al-Qaida in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The US marine corp commander said yesterday that his 22,000 troops should be redeployed from Iraq to Afghanistan. Gen James Conway said "the time is right" to leave Iraq now the war had become largely nation-building rather than the pitched fighting in which the corps excelled; he wanted the marines in Afghanistan, especially in the south where insurgents, and the Taliban and al-Qaida, benefit from both a nearby safe haven in Pakistan and a booming trade in narcotics.

Obama has warned that he is prepared to bomb inside Pakistan if he gets relevant intelligence about the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden. He had also said he would act against militants along the border if the Pakistan government failed to.

The US missiles were fired by unmanned Predator drones, which hang in the sky gathering intelligence through surveillance and, when commanded and directed by remote control, to launch attacks.

The strikes will help Obama portray himself as a leader who, though ready to shift the balance of American power towards diplomacy, is not afraid of military action.

The first attack yesterday was on the village of Zharki, in Waziristan; three missiles destroyed two houses and killed 10 people. One villager told Reuters of phonethat of nine bodies pulled from the rubble of one house, six were its owner and his relatives; Reuters added that intelligence officials said some foreign militants were also killed. A second attack hours later also in Warizistan killed eight people.

The Pakistan government publicly expressed hope that the arrival of Obama would see a halt to such strikes, which stir up hostility from Pakistanis towards the government; in private, the government may be more relaxed about such attacks.

There is a lot of nervousness in the new administration about the fragility of Pakistan, particularly as it has nuclear weapons, but it also sees Afghanistan and Pakistan as being linked. In the face of a Taliban resurgence, there is despair in Washington over the leadership of the Afghan leader, Hamid Karzai, and there will not be much disappointment if he is replaced in elections later this year.

But Washington insists on seeing as one of its biggest problems the ability of the Taliban and al-Qaida to maintain havens in Pakistan. Obama on Thursday announced he was making veteran diplomat Richard Holbrooke a special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan. The secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, spoke by phone to the Pakistan president, Asif Ali Zardari.
