...you see...I know Tim a little differently than most. Tim lived on or near Central Parkway in Florissant Missouri and attended Hazelwood Central High School..I should know...he rode my bus! Tim was always the quiet, shy kid in the back of the bus. Back then, he always wore a (green I believe) stocking cap. I remember this because someone on the bus said one time, "You always wear this hat...are you bald underneath?" Tim got off the bus and took off his cap revealing his shaggy locks. The guy (Dave Flaiz I believe) says..."Nope...he's got a full head of hair under there!"
Tim was always carrying his guitar case around...but I never got to see him open it. I assume it was a bass he was toting. The guy in the picture sitting in the trunk of the car...THAT'S the Tim I knew!
I had heard from several people that Tim was a talented musician..even back then. I was playing drums for Jim Wilsey (lead) and John Rock (rhythm) in the hottest local band that Tim probably never heard. Jim went from high school to California to practically start punk rock in America by joining a band called, The New Avengers. Steve Jones of the Pistols produced their first EP. John joined the military and contacted me a couple years ago..saying...Check out Jim Wilsey on Google. John said he had perfected this kind of guitar "twang". Turns out..Jim had hooked up with Chris Isaak and that is his guitar work you hear on "Wicked Game".
So...I was watching Tim and Dave Matthews recorded at Radio City Music Hall ( I guess) and I am thinking...hmmmm...Tim Reynolds...I know that name and sure enough after visiting his site and seeing that picture...I knew for sure...that's him.
Tim, if you read this and want to know who I am...you just MIGHT remember a long-haired kid in glasses who sat with you on the bus, way back when.(Might not too) Get an old year book and look me up! Congratulations on your success! Your chops were amazing on the video, Dave Matthew & Tim Reynolds. The wife and I really enjoyed the whole show! Amazing.
An old "Hazelwood Hawk" Alumnist,
and your newest fan,
Russ Hayden

Thanks for the welcome Hopeful! My pleasure on the "window into TR history" comment. Yeah...Tim is the second person I became aware of as making a name for himself in the music world from Florissant MO. It's so cool to have known these guys from "way back when".

Thanks very much for your hospitality Arthen. Yeah, I hope Tim actually gets to read it...it's rare in this life to actually talk to a person from your high school days!

I must also extend my hand and welcome you. You just never know which geek or weirdo you knew in school makes it big.

Tim sadly does not read these boards. However, his tour manager Fluffy Centre does as well as moderates it. He is the man you want to talk to if you want to contact Tim. Also, if you go to one of his solo or TR3 shows he is very easily approachable, and almost always comes out after the show to sign autographs and have pictures taken. I already have my leather guitar strap and Fishman Aura (a guitar thing) signed by him.

Again, welcome.

Ranting, thanks for the welcome! Well...that's too bad Tim doesn't read this board. That answers that. I was kinda hopeful when I saw that Tim is listed in the Member's section. I gotta admit I would feel kinda lame contacting Fluffy about this. After all...what's he gonna say? "Hey Tim, there's this guy Russ who says he went to school with ya and rode your bus!" I can hear the "BIG DEAL!" all the way here to Maryland from out West. Hahahaha. I guess Fluffy will read my post at some time and I'll let him decide what, if anything, to do. That's great that Tim is like that..easily approachable. I have met a few "stars" like that myself. Joe Walsh, Michael Stanley, Paul Kantner and Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep's keyboardist for many years) all great guys. I'll keep an eye out for a chance to catch Tim at a show on the East Coast. Thanks for your advice and the welcome!

Tim actually has relocated to North Carolina, so you'll be able to catch him sooner or later for sure.

His manager is Fluffy *Centner*, by the way. And he sucks. (board joke)

Hey Muzishun, I will make sure TR sees your post or I will print it out for him. He is still computer illiterate. Guess he spends to much TIMe with the guitar to waste his TIMe on computers. hehe Hard to believe in this day and age he doesn't even have one. For a lil while a few years back he attempted with webTV(anyone remember that?) but gave up on it to spend more TIMe working in his studio.(no surprise LOL) Thanx for the post, what fun read. TR still speaks often of his daze in Florissant. Believe it or not, it comes up quite often and in my travels with TR I have had the opportunity to meet quite a few folks from those daze. Members of Maga, if you remember them and random folks he either played or jammed with way back when. Everyone seems to remember him quite fondly which comes as NO surprise to me. Thanx for sharing your personal story and I will make sure TR sees it.

Hopeful...thanx for the info. I will certainly be looking for an opportunity to see TR somewhere near here.
Fluffy! Awesome...awesome...awesome!!! Thanks for the great reply! Yeah...people like TR are rare. They ARE out there...but they are rare. Even back when, I didn't know anybody that didn't like TR. Your reply is the confirmation I needed. I was pretty sure it was him but, you know, there's always the chance that I could have been wrong. Since you mentioned he still talks about his Florissant days...we've got our man! I had a few particulars I was gonna use...a few things about that day/time that only someone who grew up in Florissant would know...to prove I was from there. KSHE95,(REAL ROCK RADIO) Lawrence Fuqua (Uncle Larry..superintendent of Hazelwood Senior High), the concert venues..Kiel Auditorium, Kiel Opera House, The Ambassador Theater, The Fabulous Fox, The Checkerdome (which has been torn down and replaced) Glad Rags (headshop at Cross Keys shopping center) long gone. Things Tim might remember from that era.
So...GREAT THANX to you Fluffy for making sure TR gets to read my post! The only people I still have in my life from 1975 are my Mom and Dad and brother and sisters... and a couple of neighborhood buddy's who DIDN'T move away. How many friends do YOU GUYS have from your High School daze???
Much love,

Very cool to read all this!
quote:

A few. Having graduated high school in 71' & college in 76' I am probably the oldest one on this board. Ironically I work in the same school district I graduated from and one of the principals in the middle school I work in was in my graduating class. I only have one close girlfriend from my high school days, but run into others I knew all the time.

You are lucky to still have your mom and dad Muzishun, I lost my dad three years ago and my mom two years ago this month. Miss them sooo much! Have sisters and a brother pretty near, but my grown children are in NC and NE! The school I graduated from had some pro-football players, but no famous musicians/musical artists that I know of, unless you consider one of the guys from American Idol an artist.LOL

Glad you connected with TR after all those years. Good vibes! I think all here would agree that Tim is the most humble, kind soul any of us have ever met. To say he is unique is an understatement of gargantuan proportions! He is all that and a musical god too!

Welcome!

PJK...glad you are enjoying this...nobody is getting a bigger kick out of this than me! Being new here, I'd didn't really know if I was clogging up this board with all these reply's...but...I feel compelled to respond in kind when someone weighs in.
Yeah, the key to your being able to keep in contact, I guess, is because you are actually working in the same school district you once attended...which is awesome. Many great high school teachers have shaped me along the way. Thanks for your service. Hopefully, Obama will begin to get teachers the pay they actually DESERVE!
My sincere condolences on the loss of your parents. They all have a special place in our hearts.
Hey, pro-football players is cool. Steve Moyers, who was in the same class as TR and I, went on to play soccer for the Cosmo's and had the honor to attend a luncheon at the White House with Pele years ago.
Thanks for the welcome!

My highschool years . . . I kind of try not to think of those years, which I will label the "black years". Friends dumping me during a mental breakdown, struggling with my depression, made fun of, ignored, and the school thinking I was going to shoot up the place (no joke about that one, but you would think it's odd for a pacifist to shoot up a school).

There is only 1 person from those highschool days I still consider a friend, and he is hard to contact.

However, if you go further back I am friends with Quinn whom I knew from birth (and I was about 3 months old, lol). He's one of my 3 best friends. The second coming from 5th grade, where Quinn introduced me to Adam, and he still lives in town. Then Anna I met only 3 years ago, but feels like we've known each other all our lives.

High school taught me one thing, how to know who my TRUE friends are.

Anyways, welcome again tot he boards.

Ranting,
Wow...that's rough. You need a hug? Wanna hug it out? (a line from an Entourage commercial). Seriously though, that IS how we find out who are true friends are...we put em to the test. I had the misfortune of having ALL my best friends screw my girlfriend behind my back at a very young age. I kicked them ALL to the curb. Sure, she was a slut, but where was their concern for MY feelings? It can be a pretty rough playground out there. (no pun intended)
But hey, at least you have THREE you can count on. I figure it this way, if you have 2 or 3 people who you can truly call a friend when you check out of this life...you beat the game.
If someone truly IS your friend...treat them good. As we both know...friends like that are few and far between!
Thanks again for the welcome!

Hey Russ, I read your posts to TR in the van yesterday and with each thing I read he chuckled as the memories flooded back. He isn't sure the hat was green but he said he did always wear a winter hat of some sort. He was really trying to place you. Hopefully we will have an opportunity to meet you next TIMe we are in the St. Louis area. TR says thanx for the memories and I say welcome aBOARD!

Fluffy,
Thanks so much man! That is absolutely awesome! Just to let you know, I am no longer in the St. Louis area. I met my now-wife online about 3 years ago and moved to Rockville, MD. We moved and bought a house in Hagerstown, MD about two years ago, which is where we are now! So, any info on upcoming dates in this area would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for going out of your way to make sure Tim heard from me. I can't tell you how much that means to me!

Wow, kewl, I am from the DC area. Worked at 9:30 Club for 18 years. Although I still pay rent in Fairfax I have been staying in OBX where TR moved last year. There is talk of a possible show in Falls Church and Baltimore just after New Years. Let's hope they pan out. Maybe we can see you at one of those if they happen.

Yeah, the trouble is 2 of those "friends" I love. One I am in love with (and even though I despise her, my love is still strong, however she is not healthy for my life so I never want her back).

And those 3 friends, when I consider you a best friend that's family to me. That will never go away. My Mom also loves them all (she is friends with Quinn's parents, hell that's how me and Quinn knew each other from the start) and my friend Adam calls my mom "mother" lol! Then even though I have known Anna for only 3 years, and she has only seen her a couple of times, my Mom already loves her.

I also always think of my friends, and always love to tell them things, and give them things. I get excited when I am about to do something for them (especially the top 3).

But there are more things that happened to me in high school, and even stuff in grade school and middle school. It's taken quite some time to move on, but as of a few years ago I finally have. The only thing that keeps me from going to a Hypnosis and blocking those memories is the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Those bad and even horrible moments make us who we are today. If you havn't seen that movie, do it! Jim Carrey deserved an Oscar for it. Kate Winslet was nominated, but didn't win. It was written by the same man who did Being John Malcovich and Adaptation.

I didn't have a terrible time in high school. I got along and had a decent group of friends. Never went to my 5 year reunion. Ten is coming up in a year or so. I doubt I'll go, but mainly just because I doubt anyone I really knew well would be there.
