I know there are few differences between these two. The HD has scalloped bracing, bracing farther forward, tortoise shell pickguard, other cosmetics, etc. But the thing I was wondering is if any of you have played these two back to back that could give me an idea on the sound difference and whether it is worth the swing for the extra cash.

thanks in advance,

-Gunnar

First of all, both are amazing guitars.

The HD-35 does not have the forward-shifted bracing...but you are correct that it is scalloped.

Anyhow, generally, the HD-35 will have a bit more bass than the D-35, due to the scalloped braces. All of this stuff is very general, because every guitar sounds unique...but the scalloped bracing tends to add more bass, more volume, and a bit more punch.

You also might find that you'll get slightly better wood grades on the HD...but that could be hit-or-miss too.

I perfer the D-35 over the HD-35...but I find that both of these guitars can be too bassy for my taste. I think Tim has proved otherwise though!

I don't think it's worth the extra money...unless you're in a bluegrass band or you only hammer out a lot of rhythm playing.

I'd recommend playing both models as much as possible before springing for a purchase. I've played really great, and not-so-great guitars for both models.

But at the end of the of the day, you probably can't go wrong.

I prefer the tortoise pickguard though!

Hope my wishy-washy opinion helps...

Thanks for the reply! And I didn't find anything like that on that forum, but thanks for your effort.

No problem. Their search feature is pretty flaky...I'll keep my eye on it and post some links if/when it starts working again.

Let me know what you get. And post some pictures. I love guitar porn...

I have the HD-35 and love it. I personally prefer the HD, but Gnome is basically 100% in the assessment that the HD will have more bass. I think however the HD-35 is the unsung hero in the Martin lineup. But either way, definitely play the models many times. I got mine through Eldely, and I have not been disappointed.

I'm almost there...

I know the HD is wonderful, my dad actually owns one. I've played for hours and hours and love it, best acoustic ever. But I haven't gotten to compare the two yet, but I've played both. See, every D-35 I've played has had the oldest, shittiest, dead, strings you've ever heard on it so I can't give it a fair chance. Even when we first got the HD the strings were awful. You wouldn't have guessed it was the same guitar after the restringing.

I have only played a HD-28 and a D-28. I know the D-28 is very close to the D-35.

I personally liked the sound and feel of the D-28 over the HD-28. Call me mad, but that's what I like.

Not communicating can hurt more than any word that can be said -
