If you like this story, Please watch this very important movie about "STUFF" http://www.storyofstuff.com/index.html and do what you will with it. It's ifolutionial!
True story: A close mutual friend of Tim and Diane arranged a meeting with me at their home in NM in 2001-ish. All I had to offer was 20 years experience to help Tim any way I could, that is, if a genius wanted or needed anything from a complete stranger, but who is a fan that loves him.
After hanging out for several magical minutes with a hero, his family and our mutual friend, Diane encouraged us to go have fun. Politely and humbly, Tim asked if I would mind looking at his new digital multi-tracker that wasn't cooperating with him. Baffled by the user interface, I too was stumped. Shit!
Within minutes of Tim fetching the manual, we had it working properly and he was happy. Cool! We began test tracking an inprov with Tim doing an amazing job of playing his drum machine real-time like he did on Sanctuary and See into Your Soul. Tim however wasn't amused by his performance and mused his desire "if I could loop it".
Again, Tim quickly fetched me the manual and soon after was turned onto the joy of programming his drum machine into song structures like his heroes NIN and Skinny Puppy. He was happy... Bonus COOL!
A year or two later after touring, recording Nomadic Wavelength, and touring we met again at his studio, this time to record some stuff (2 improvs and 2 written pieces with programmed drums).
Mercury Direct obviously made the final cut. A totally cool track that we recorded and mixed in not more than 2 hours. Most of that time was tuning the bass and Les Paul, positioning the mic on his Marshall TSL 100 and 4/12 cab, setting levels, tweaking the bass pod and listening back to the bass and guitar takes that he pulled of in one take each. Scorchin Cool
This experience was priceless. Just being in the same room with him I couldn't help but absorb the magic from his prowess and mastery of his musicianship. His presence is so beyond words. Words like humble, intelligent, focused, grounded, polite, centered, funny, insightful, gracious and holy only scratch the surface in describing what I sense to be the most complete artist ever. Tim, you slay! If you ever have a few hours to spend in NM, I'd love to turn you on to some more midi applications (sycronized effects and loops), vintage fuzz tones and synth style filtering for guitar and bass.
Happy solstice to all....
