he noticed that they were wearing the same boots as the other cops. when he asked one if they were cops, the guy's eyes lit up with surprise i guess, which confirmed his suspicions...that and the three cops were the only ones trying to incite a riot. also, he was on guard to protect the true protesters because this has happened before. remember the WTO protest in Seattle a while back? had he not done what he did and caught the cops, this would've turned out the same way.
