I am not going to do this show justice right now, mostly because I am so tired. TR didn't take the stage until midnight. Had I known that, my own stupidiy for not calling the venue first, I would have arrived much later than I did.

My daughter, her fiance, my son and I arrived at the venue around 8. We ate dinner there, talked over drinks and had a lot of laughs. They started letting people into the room around 9:20 or so. We had more drinks, the place was stifling hot, no air moving. I guess they didn't turn on the air until right before the first guy took the stage.

There were two openers, neither of which impressed me. I don't mean to be harsh, but they were just average, run of the mill guitarists. My son wasn't impressed with them either. Both were personable, and interacted with the crowd, but lacked any "wow" factor.

TR took stage around midnight. By now I was feeling tired, having been up since dawn, and very relaxed, thanks to the alcohol, but wow,was TR on! We stood right up front. My mind feels like mush, but he played Come Together, I think as his second song. My son tapped me on the shoulder and reminded me that at PSU, everyone sang along on the chorus, here the crowd was more subdued. He played Indoctrinate, Ancestors, Stream, The Letter, which BTW was amazing and brought back a flood of memories, I love that song! I have never seen TR solo where he was so funny! He sang a little duck song and almost lost it laughing, it was hilarious!

As the night wore on the crowd thinned out, which was fine. There were only about 40 people left by the end of the set, but those people were really into his playing. I admit, I had to go to the back and find a wall to lean on by that point, LOL. Its hard to say that this was the best I've seen TR play because I have always been blown away by the way he makes those guitars sing. This was however, a very unique performance and he seemed so happy and free.

At the end of the show I did get to talk with Fluffy a bit and he gave me my poster, which TR signed "To Pam, Another Alien Lost In Space, Peace, Tim Reynolds" I am going to have it framed today. As Fluffy said, the board picture of it doesn't do it justice.

TR came out and I got to talk with him a few minutes, he excused himself and went over to the bar. One of the guys from the venue told us we had to leave, TR headed back towards us and said "you leaving?" and we told they were making us leave, so we thanked him, I gave him a hug and a little something I brought for him and we left. I never got to see Fluffy again, which was a bummer, because I had something for him too. It didn't occur to me to give everything to TR and he could have given it to Fluffy, because it all happened so fast. Oh well, there's always the mail.

That was the only problem with it being such a late show. Fluffy said TR was flying home before noon today so they couldn't even sleep in on their first day off. I have my doubts if Fluffy even got any sleep at all, if he did, it had to only be an hour or so as he still had a lot of book work to do. It was after 2 A.M. when we left the bar, and I am sure they were there another half hour or so. Don't expect to see him on line until tomorrow at the earliest.

Thanks Fluffy, for the poster, I am so sorry we didn't get to see you again, it wasn't intentional. It was probably better in the long run for you guys to leave ASAP anyway. Wishing all of you a safe trip home, and Fluffy....Get some SLEEP!!!

It certainly was a memorable night. Thanks TIM for another mind altering experience!

Welcome aBOARD, maismiles527! Glad you came out and hope you will stick around and contribute to our little TR community.

This was our first TIMe at the North Star Bar in Philly I have to say that I was worried when I first arrived and saw the type of venue knowing it was a Saturday nite. Then I was informed of our massive presale to the show which only made me worry more about "the saturday nite bar chatter". I am HAPPY to say that my worry was all for naught. The bar was set up in such a way that the main bar part of the club(including pool tables which always make for a noisy room) were completely seperate from the music space. I was still a tad worried that with so many people it would be a loud audience. Luckily not the case. More on that later.

We soundchecked very quickly and painlessly(THANX REED!)and the room sounded amazing. There was a balcony but the way it was set up pretty much only the first few rows of the balcony could actually see TR on stage. There were no speakers upstairs so the folks on the balcony basically heard what TR was hearing onstage. The main room sounded fantastic and TR's guitars were as crisp and clear as some of the nicer rooms like Woodstock. Must admit that was kind of a surprise based solely on how the place looked. It was a kewl old building which looked more like a row house than a venue and the inside was old-school elegant. Most of the wood that made up the place was from an old church and it looked absolutely beautiful. At the front of the stage was a sunken floor making it easy for folks to see all the way to the back of the room.

From the dressing room we could hear the din of noise by the almost sold out crowd and I again feared the worst for TR's set. I was very surprised to see how quiet they all became when the first of our 2 openers took the stage. Ahhh, there is still hope. LOL The first opener was Kalai King who was in a band called Hawkeye that had opened for Chris Whitley on the west coast a couple of TIMes. One of the shows was the one I did with CW and "the Germans" at the Roxy in LA with Johnny Society opening for us as well as supplying our backline. Kalai gave an energetic set more in a style of a folky, singer-songwriter. After a short break Adam Acurago took the stage for what became a brief set. I think he wasn't sure how long he was supposed to play for. LOL Around 11:25 he announced his last song and I was like, "HUH?" Then he played it, left the stage and returned shortly to play a bit more. I think someone told him he had finished to early. LOL The audience was also quiet and respectful for Adam. With Adam done early and it getting later and later we opted to have TR go on a few early instead of causing to audience to languish waiting or TR to take the stage at midnite. TR went on about 10 minutes early.

TR was in an exceptionally good mood this evening and it really showed from the stage. He laughed, joked and played alot of very unusual versions of the songs on his setlist which looked something like this:

(setlist titled: become one with the love but don't hurt the jewels)

Alien Invocation
Come Together
Jemez
Betrayal
This Is The One
Whole Lotta Logs
Indoctrinate
Perplexed Monkeys From Outer Space Battling Cell Phone Bananas
----------------------------------------------------------------
Feeling Doors
Ancestors
Strain
Coco
Death Squad TV
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Squirting Love Doll In The House
Dreaming with A View
Smells So Dead
Kundalini Poser-Anti-Cream Seminar
The Letter - Barabarabaraba
Large Organ Donations For The Doctor Fuckin Stein - Stone Hand Doner
------------------------------------------------------------------
Hands Full
Doom
White House(Reptiles In Disguise)
Ocean
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Just One Fuck
Bang A Gong-bang many gong's-and again
Meat Box Wingnut Healing Fork

(side margin notes:Soft Underbelly Barbie Music)

As I mentioned before TR was having a great TIMe on stage due in large part to the listening audience who were definitely having a good TIMe despite the late hour of the performance. On the setlist Strain was "Stream" and sort after that the audience began to dwindle slowly but surely leaving the die-hards to really be priviledged to see TR in rare form onstage unloading some quite unique versions of songs. The most unique being TR's blues version of Dreaming with alternate lyrics. TR also referred to this during soundcheck as Dreaming(Brandenburg Variation) even though it didn't make it onto the setlist that way for whatever reason. Who knows what goes on in his mind. He also inserted something into the set that I will call "Kill the Duck's" which is absolutely hysterical. TR said something about it being a song from high school and (c)Rew told me he had played it on a nite prior to this but I must have missed it that nite. I was laughing so hard as TR sang it and I could see that TR was on the verge of breaking out laughing himself. You will see what I mean as the show was recorded on video. Sadly the outs from the board gave off a bad buzz so the audio will just be from the video camera, but at least it was captured for all to enjoy this unique performance.

The other very notable alternate version was White House Denies where thru the entire song TR would sing the new line Reptiles in Disguise. I thought it was very kewl but figured it was just TR improv, but I talked to TR after the set about it and I get the feeling it may have been him goofing this TIMe but he seemed to like it and I get the impression he may keep it so you may see this one again. Other things I can remember were The Letter was played into Barabajagal but TR never sang the lyrics to Barabajagal. He just took the Letter directly into the riff from Barabajagal and jammed on it a bit. TR joked from stage toward the end of the set that it was nearing tequila TIMe and shortly thereafter one of the bartenders delivered a LARGE shot of tequila to TR onstage which he sipped at before finishing the set. Didn't get her name but THANX for looking out for TR. He was so excited when he got it. LOL TR ended the set with Ocean. If memory serves, Just One Fix and Bang a Gong were the encores.

By the end of the show, the crowd had dwindled quite a bit but the folks left more than made up for the numbers. They were energetic and quite enthusiastic. I think they would have had TR go on all nite. It really ended up being a great evening and dare I say, the best Philly show we have had. Thanx to the audience, Andrew, Keith, Reed and rest of the staff at North Star for providing us with an unforgettable nite in Philly.

Also of note: Another first, we had one of those "painting to the music" folks attend the show, his name was Chris Cank Kelleher. I watched him paint during TR's set and the only thing I can equate it to is like watching The Wizard of Oz while listening to Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon. His brush strokes really seemed to go with the music. Not being a painter myself I imagined that the music must influence you profoundly. His finished product was sweet. Not sure what happened to it. I think he sells them, not sure if he sold his TR one or not. I looked for it on his website but didn't see it. I am going to send him an email to see if we can get a pic of it posted here on this thread. Keep watching. His website is:

Sorry I never caught back up with you Pam. I had no idea they were going to clear the room when I rushed off to settle with the club. I guess I should have known since they were talking about making sure TR was done by 1:50 am because of the no alcohol thing after 2 am. I looked for you after I settled in the other room but to no avail. Glad you had a great TIMe and got such a wonderful show for you and your fam. Wish I had had more TIMe to chat with you guys. Hope Wendy and Jesse enjoyed it as much as you did.

Here is the email I received from Chris about the painting and a jpeg:
quote:
Fluffy,

Thanks so much for letting me paint! It was a great time! I think a lot of people were jiving with the idea, more than even other musical events I have painted in the past. TR has some very dedicated and open minded fans, very supportive of creativity. While I thought the openers were pretty good, they definitely did inspire me nearly as much as when TR started playing. The painting definitely took off then. I thought it was especially cool how the audience really quieted down during TR's set.

Well here is a jpeg of the final painting. Please let me know anytime
you would be down with me painting his music again. I firmly believe the future of the arts is collaboration.

Cheers,

Chris "Cank" Kelleher

The show was awesome, Tim played beautifully. I finally got to meet the man himself as I was waiting in line for the bathroom. I heard someone behind me ask if this was the line for the can. I answered yes then turned around and it was Tim! I was so excited. I thanked him for coming back to Philly and told him how much of an honor it was to finally meet him. I got all tingly and stuff when I shook his hand!

Fluffy, thanks to you for letting me set up my camera. It was my first time recording a show and I am definately a rookie. My camera is an "old fasion" film camera and I came with 2 30 min. tapes thinking they were 1 hr. tapes. Therefore I had to switch from Standard Play to Super Long Play, making the film kind of grainy. I did capture the whole thing and the sound quality isn't too bad so I'll see what I can do about getting that out to you all. I'm new to all this recording stuff so bear with me while I figure out all the technical stuff.

Back to the show, I'm really liking This Is The One and the opening song Alien Invocation was awesome, I brought along a Tim virgin and the look on his face was priceless, he didn't think those sounds could come from an acoustic guitar. We were up front, in awe, the whole TIMe. Thanks again Tim for a great show!

THANX Sean for taking the TIMe and effort to capture the show for all to enjoy. Look forward to hearing the recording from that nite. Definitely some unique versions were captured by you. Glad you enjoyed it and finally got to meet TR. Hope I have a chance to meet you at some point in the future.

Yes, Wendy and Jesse had an awesome TIMe, so did Bill. What a fun night that was. We were watching the artist finish up that painting at the end of TR's set. Very cool indeed. That was the only one I really liked. He was very talented, but I got "angry vibes" from the other paintings, LOL. I thought I saw a girl walking away with the one you posted here. I assumed she bought it, but maybe not since he had a picture of it.

I took TR's poster and a poster of SOKO's In November Sunlight that Mike, Houston and Johnny had signed for me a number of years ago, to the store to get custom framed. I picked out a purple metal frame for the poster and a turquoise metal frame for the INS poster. When Wendy moves out in June, I am making her bedroom into a guest room and the posters are going on the wall. I really love that TR poster!

By the way, it appears that you and I keep opposite schedules. I think you go to bed about the time I get up, LOL. That's why it was hard to see TR when his set was so late. It said 9:00 on the tickets so allowing an hour for an opening act, I figured he would go on around 10:00. I was wrong, LOL.
