Front page of my local newspaper this morning. A 52 year old man, former Army reservist, is being deployed to Iraq! This guy just bought a 1.5 million dollar auto repair business and now he is being sent to Iraq, along with his whole 125 member Army National Guard Unit, 213th Area Support Group. He had done a one year tour in Kosovo which ended in 2003, and they said he would be kept "on orders" until 2006. He NEVER thought he would be activated again. He thought it had to be a mistake, The Army told him "the rules have changed!"

Ya, and now they're doing 15 month tours right? I don't envy anyone who has or will go to Iraq. This war will be going when our grandchildren are here (assuming I have children someday). The thought of how many people will have to serve there is ridiculous and infuriating. I read the other day that Howard Zinn amongst others where encouraging resistance by our troops. I can't believe he's being sent though. It makes me wonder if a friend of mine will be called back. I don't think he will although Blackwater wants him bad and are willing to pay him a ridiculous amount of money. |

This is called "Stop Loss" and the troops have been trying to make it go away for a couple of years now, but with no success. My guess is that the guy from your hometown has a very specific specialty that's in short supply in Iraq. Possibly Explosive Ordnance Disposal, which is a big recruiting area for the Army right now. |

An interesting article on another aspect of how some injured soldiers are being handled.
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070409/kors
"But instead of sending Town to a medical board and discharging him because of his injuries, doctors at Fort Carson, Colorado, did something strange: They claimed Town's wounds were actually caused by a "personality disorder." Town was then booted from the Army and told that under a personality disorder discharge, he would never receive disability or medical benefits."
Quite disgusting.
