Fuck, I'm going to have to either quit trafficing coke or get a new clean phone. No, but seriously that jacked up. I hope people wake up and realize how our government has been completely stolen from us.

yes, i'm pretty sure most of us have. brazil was released in 1985, and takes place in a vague time period ("somewhere in the 20th century.) much like orwell's 1984, this future society has an oppressive government, most notably in the movie, the ministry of information, which is pretty much directly taken from 1984. the characters, due largely to a government mix up, become entangled in a terrorist plot.

the similarities to today would be the torture of terrorists suspects in the movie, the wave of terrorist/counterterrorist attacks and damage to civil liberties.

the movie is essentially a rip off of 1984

It's common knowledge that it is based off of 1984. Like how Dr Strangelove is bassed off of the (serious) book Red Alert (which Kubrick bought rights to so he could make the movie, and what a movie). The society is similar to the one in 1984, and the world is, but the story is different. Plus it's half absurd in BRazil, and just mind blowing to watch.

yeah, i know it's common knowledge. what a strange thing to say. if you want to talk about more in depth so we can impress each other with our knowledge of the film, and film making in general, then just say so. we can use fancy words like "dystopia" and type in academic phrasing.

truthfully, though, i was just responding to "i wonder if anyone knows of brazil" the short answer being "yes." i'm not really prepared to talk about themes and thematic development or how the "stage design" plays a role in that.

The discerning members of this community are definitely familiar with Brazil. It's always on Fluffy's list of great movies, and there's a Criterion Collection version which I believe we've also listed on the BOARD.

That's an interesting take on it. If I were to compare the two, I wouldn't use the term "rip off." Perhaps tribute, or homage.

that's a fine line to draw. although i suppose that almost naming it "1984 and a half" would indicate some sort of tribute. but isn't brazil part of some sort of thematic trilogy?

Yep, Terry Gilliam refers to Brazil as the second in a trilogy of movies about the "craziness of our awkwardly ordered society and the desire to escape it through whatever means possible."

The other two movies in the trilogy are Time Bandits and Baron Munchausen.

Haven't seen Time Bandits, but I thoroughly enjoy Gilliam's Baron Munchausen, although I prefer the original:

Have you seen that version Teri? I think you'd enjoy it.
