| Wow! I never saw that, that is great. It says dreamdoor is a "personal" website which doesn't surprise me as I think anyone of us here could make a much better list of the top 100 guitar players than the debacle that was the Rolling Stone a little while ago. Ones the the RS poll seem to be more popularity contests than actually focusing on the abilities of any one guitarist. It was also wonderful to notice that the highlighted guitarists on that page were Phil Keaggy, Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke, John Fahey and Chet Atkins, all artists that would definitely be on my list and that we have all talked about here on this message board at one TIMe or another. I was not shocked to see that Joan Jett did not make this particular list. LOL |

I went back and looked at all the lists and surprisingly Django isn't on any of them. Quite an oversite and very surprising since he even manages to find far more obscure and equally talented players like Glenn Branca and Jim O'Rourke. Upon my last look I noticed something I hadn't noticed before, he also has a list of "listening recommendations":
"Oracle" - Michael Hedges
"Beyond Nature" - Phil Keaggy
"The Legend of Blind Joe Death" - John Fahey
"Six & Twelve String Guitar" - Leo Kottke
"How Can I Keep From Singing" - Gayla Drake Paul
"Quah" - Jorma Kaukonen
"Manzanita" - Tony Rice
"Only" - Tommy Emmanuel
"Metal" - Preston Reed
"Stream" - Tim Reynolds
It only lists 10 and it looks like TR made it by the skin of his teeth, but given some of the folks listed in that 100, that TR is singled out is wonderful. There really is some great stuff on that list.
UPDATE: OK, I knew there was no way he could overlook Django, we just had to look in the RIGHT place. So for you Dave, here it is:

That's awesome he's got TR on the top 10 recommendations. Tim is the man and I don't see how you could have a top guitarists list without either Tim or Django, but that's just my opinion.

| i saw leo kottke live not that long ago. the man puts on a good show, and plays so good it's almost absurd. i'd suggest that anyone go see him. you know. if you like music. |

We just saw the Spirit of Django Reinhardt in NYC they do every year at Lincoln Center (saw TR ther ein 03) and it included some of the best performers I have ever seen:
Starring legendary Gypsy guitarist TCHAVOLO SCHMITT,
Gypsy guitar star DORADO SCHMITT,
young guitar dynamo SAMSON SCHMITT,
virtuoso violinist FLORIN NICULESCU,
accordion great LUDOVIC BEIER,
top Dutch jazz pianist PETER BEETS,
U.S. saxophone great JOEL FRAHM and
musical director/bassist BRIAN TORFF.
Check the SCHMITT's out they were AMAZING. Actually when we went and saw the Spirit of Django in 2003 I think he brok ea string mid song...TIED it together and finished the song with an incredible solo! I never saw anything like it! |

On a similar note, probably about 10 or 12 years ago I say the Kinsey Report play at the old 9:30 Club. On this particular nite Big Daddy Kinsey happened to be playing with band and during the set he broke a string. I stood there and watched him change it mid-song and then incorporated the plucks of the string to tune it into a blistering solo, it was pretty unbelieveable. The only thing I could compare it to was my Billy Cobham experience. Those 2 experiences have really stuck with me over the years as moments of musicianship of the highest caliber and true mastery over the instrument. Neither one every missed a beat or even looked like it was a problem. In fact, if I hadn't been watching I am not sure I would have even know anything was different. Yes, that unbelieveable. |

I bought that Rolling Stone as a tribute to commercial bullshitism. What a disgusting displsy of ass-kissing and ball-washing. I mean if you are trying to propogate real information, then do 5 minutes of research. For the love of Mary.
