i cant stand this guy. hes a young hip cool new artist who once again sucks at guitar but people think hes a musical prodigy. in his music video it shows him playing drums bass and guitar. anyone can do that, and that is his staple. if you can play guitar, you can pretty much play bass unless you are trying to be victor wooten. and if you sit down and play drums, you can get a few basic beats in a day. i only say i play guitar(b/c that is what i am best at) but if i wanted to be a prick i could say i can play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, acoustic bass, electric bass, mandolin, banjo, ukelelee, grand piano, keyboard, and drums. it just pissed me off. done |

it depends on your definition of "playing an instrument." if to you, playing an instrument means "able to get non-random tones out of it" then yeah, playing guitar means you can play any fretted string instrument. i think a better definition involves some consideration of proficiency and knowledge of the instrument. how well do you know the fretboards of all of those instruments? can you play in all the keys well in all those instruments? do you understand the capabilities of them all, as far as dynamics and tone color are concerned? do you understand their basic chord formations? are you capable with them? i think, to be able to say that you play these instruments, you have to be able to say yes to all of these questions, to a certain degree. obviously it wouldn't require perfect, absolute knowledge, but you need to be functional in all of those things, and they don't transfer from instrument to instrument simply because they have strings and are fretted.
i never heard of the guy you're talking about, so i can't pass a judgement on him one way or another. |

I personally think that banjo players are quite good. Bluegrass is one of my faovrite music styles. I'm sure there's people who play Banjo's that aren't very good but I don't think you can automatically be good at a banjo just cuz you paly guitar.
Other than that i agree.. |

After 3.5 years playing guitar, I found that learning some of the basic rolling techniques used for specifically bluegrass music was not too difficult, though I play predominantly fingerstyle guitar.
Can't play drums worth a shit tho.
His name is Teddy Geiger. Nuff said. |

oh yeah. banjo is a totally different animal. you don't play guitar and then just pick that up and be good already.
even moving from pickstyle or fingerstyle guitar to classical guitar is a hard transition. if you think you can just go right into classical guitar from fingerstyle or pickstyle, you're going to get a nasty little surprise when you try. you're out of your element, donny. |

What helped me with my finerpicking was actually buying a banjo and practicing rolls. Then I went back to the guitar and had better dexterity and applied similar techniques to my fingerpicking.
On the classical note Dan, are there any good online reference sites for pacticing fingerstyles/pickings for classical guitar? I'd dearly love to improve my playing and technique. |

you need to get the book "pumping nylon." i wouldn't bother with the internet because of the lack of actual, real notation. real notation is a part of classical guitar. |

okay .. so what I think ... you are all jealous. Teddy Geiger is absolutely amazing! He's AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS He can play the guitar amazingly well. I seriously don't see you trying to make it in the music industry. Teddy is a crystal-blue-eyed heart throb that has captured the heart of millions of teenage girls around the world. He doesn't need your criticism. He definitely has talent!!! Just accept the fact that youre jealous of him and get over it. That, or just grow up and wake up to reality! |

So why don't you grab onto his shiny ponytail, hop on his back and let his metal-shredding fingers carry you off into the sunset, because really, in everyone's reality, Teddy is lame.
Anyone who can play scales proficiently can sit and play the heartless garbage that came out of Teddy's 'shredtal' guitar.

that was easily the most brutal thing i've read in a while, and i fucking applaud you.
as for you, ms. bold face font, i would have to suggest that you have no fucking clue what you're talking about. you don't see us trying to make it in the music industry? do you even know any of us? maybe some of us are. you don't know. why say that? why the fuck even open your mouth? do you normally walk into a room of strangers and make sweeping comments about their personal lives? that's fucking psycotic. and either way, it doesn't matter. have you ever criticized someone in a job you've never done? ever criticize the president? have you ever been president? according to your logic, no one can criticize anyone who doesn't do exactly what you do. fact is, that is in everyone's power to do. and are you trying to make it in the music industry? if you're not, that makes your post even more stupid than it already was. and that's like going down to the maraina trench with a shovel and getting to work. also, your comments about how he looks have nothing at all to do with music, so, you know, why bring that up, too? you need to wake up to reality, and i'm your fucking wake up call.
i'm jealous? of what? i'm a better musician than he his. that's not me being prideful, it's just fact. and these other people here? they're all better musicians, too. so what do we have to be jealous of? yeah, i wish i had less talent, then i could be more like teddy gingerface or whatever. give me a break.
i was staggered to read your post. absolutely staggered. it's a joke, right? it has to be a joke. serious people don't think and talk like you just did. i'm blown the fuck away. |

Despite your criticism... the guy has made it into the entertainment industry which says something. Give the guy some credit... he knows how to entertain and thats a whole level of talent that many artist, including many of you critics, lack which is why you are not making it in the business! |

Did you miss the retorts to the first Geiger supporter? Except for a small minority, the members of the board aren't attempting to break into the industry. The ones that are, have more talent in one fingernail than Geiger does in his body. Even the ones who aren't trying to get into the industry are more talented, like that Bakun kid who just turned fifteen. |
