I'm currently listening to Roundabout by YES. (as having listened to every single Tim concert in the past week, twice) I think that YES is one band that's instrumentally wonderful. In the albums Big Generator and Fragile they have a few instrumental songs which are quite good. What makes them better is that unlike Metalica, they start out with great music and then when they start singing it doesn't completely ruin the song because of good song writing. (btw I hate metalica)

As far as I'm concerend TR is the best guitarist in history. (Jimmy Hendrix can go get run over by cross town trafic while building sand castles with the edge of his hand for all I care) So I'm wondering how you guys feel about a band like YES that's great as a whole but not specifically the best on any one instrument.

i completely agree. i listened to that song so many times the entire month of january. i also agree about jimi hendrix..hes good, but i think hes retarded. just cause he was a little dumb and picked up the guitar backwards when he was young doesnt mean im going to regard him as the greatest guitarist that ever was..

wow...I am gonna go out on a limb and guess that you are pretty young?

I agree that most guitarists are over rated...but jimi had something more that most others did not...his spirit was something special, hell, and I never met the guy.

you can see it in how he played and what he played, not to mention not a lot of people were not doing what he was doing at the time....I mean you can keep going back, you could say everyone sucks at guitar compared to Django Reinhardt becuas ehe only had 3 useable fingers (quite a handicap) and was faster and improved more than anyone else, ever. The reason he would be titled "the best" is because of the time he played, NO ONE was doing what he did.

I think guitarists vary so much from playing ability, song writing, melody, improv, charisma, energy, individuality, that to say there is one best one out there would be elementary....but of course we can all have our opinions.

I don't think you can have a greatest guitarist ever. As for Jimi he was revolutionary! An innovator! TR and all the other guitarists we love are a result of Jimi, just as he probably grew up listening to people like Robert Johnson, etc, etc.

It all fits into a tapestry, one can't come before the other.

I have Fragile and Relayer by Yes and I love them both. To me, Yes is probably one of the greatest bands at what they do. All their music is complex and completely different.

As for Hendrix, I think he is absolutely amazing. I agree with rubylith when he says that he was called the best because nobody was doing what he did. Hendrix started a new way of guitar playing that was nothing like what anybody else was doing and it was all his own. That and his music rocked.

yikes..sorry. i completely agree hes and amazing guitarist. what i was trying to say is i get annoyed at peeps who praise him b/c he played the guitar backwards. thats a usless praise, b/c we all couldve learned guitar that way if thats how we started. so HERE is my opinion refined; amazing guitarist (revolutionary, all of that), picked up the guitar backwards and i cant really find a reason to praise that; sort of stupid.
thats it...i still love you allhearts!

I like Jimmy's music. I think that he belongs near the top of the list. The thing that bothers me is Kurt Cobain. He is # 12 on the top 100 Guitarists in Rolling Stone. COME ON!!! I'm sorry if there are any fans of his here but, NIRVANA SUCKS!! The only thing that he contributed to music is it's ability to annoy me. Apparently, you can play basic chords, moan into a microphone, and as long as you die of an O.D., you will be a legend. Jimmy may not be "the best" compared to music that has come out after him, but at least he contributed to the progression of music, as opposed to it's decline.

Two things:

1. Rolling Stone sucks and cannot be relied upon to present a list of musicians/artists/guitarists, etc.

2. It's Jimi. Not Jimmy.

That's all. Anyways, I enjoy Yes too.

the guitarist for dire straits, whose name i forget, is way underrated.

although i don't care for hendrix, and i think he's overrated, he definintely doesn't suck. when i think suck, i think kurt cobain. the word was created solely for him. hendrix isn't really my cup of tea, but the fact remains: he was innovative. it's not a reason i'd have to listen to a musician, but there's something to be said about it.

(Currently listening to an Elton John concert)

The original intent of this post was about the band Yes, however I've seen that most posts are defending Jimmy. I'll agree that I like some of Jimmy Hendrix' music but revolution != best (!= means not equal to). If you want to go with bet guitarests according to who started what... Jerry Lee Lewis case closed. I mean heck, the guitar of Elvis is probobly what inspired Jimmy Hendrix. Does that mean that Elvis is the best?

Basically the idea that what's revolutionary = best means that every one hit wonder on earth is the best. I mean do you really want to say that Tub Thumping is the best song ever?

Yes I'm young, Yes I think Jimmy's overrated, Yes I like Yes now answer the question. And Ruby, I'm young yet, stop swearing :-P

yes, originality is important, but no, it doesn't make a musician "good." don't confuse important and good. would you want to fly in the first airplane ever built across the atlantic ocean? no, because the first airplane wasn't that good. but it was important. the only exception is bach. to continue the analogy, someone like jimi hendrix would be an early airplane, but bach is the laws of physics that allow for flight at all.

"best" is a complicated issue. you can't take pure technical skill as the sole measure. neither can you take only writing ability, expression, spirit or energy or whatever, or improv skills. you need all of these in some measure. to lack in one aspect will damage the others. they're all important, and you can't neglect any one of them. all of the greats have all of these. and what's more, this holds true for any musician. there's a difference between being a guitarist and musician. attention to all of these are required for any instrument. the best of us will blend all of these skills, and have some degree of mastery in them, some more than others.

then there's the question of style. how important is improv to someone playing jazz? terribly important. however, improv is irrelevent to someone playing classical. how important is technical proficiency to a rock guitarist? probably less important than to a jazz player. put a great folk guitarist in a jazz band. suddenly he sucks. part of what makes tim reynolds so great is his proficency in such a large number of styles, in addition to his mastery of technique, melody, expression, harmony and individuality. tim reynolds is one of the best around not for one reason or another, but for all reasons.

death to false metal.

That's almost the exact same thing I tell people when I explain why TR's my favorite guitarist. He masters both electric and acoustic versions of the guitar. He can play on a classical, as we've seen, as well. He is an amazing well rounded guitarist. And he owns.

At this point I'd like to point out that crack that I've made at Hendrix is because I thought it was funny or clever. I don't really have a problem with Jimmy Hendrix. (however have you been experienced is an aweful song) Now Jim Morrison. He's one guy who's WAY overrated.

I haven't heard his newest stuff.

Morrison is good. Not a great musician or singer, but his poetry is amazing. I bought a book of his unreleased poetry. Morrison was a crazy mofo. Each peom brings you to his dark place and shows you around (no bullshit). He's no genious, but it is interesting to see the world through his twisted eyes.

I'd say Steve Hackett. He's the former lead guitarist of Genesis turned classical guitarist. He can do great electric leads and full Segovia tribute songs. Plus he's a great composer.

As much as i love the band yes and Steve Howe, who for some reason nobody mentioned, you really shouldn't talk shit about jimi hendrix. Well i guess you can, but you really have to understand that without him a lot of the crazy shit you hear people play on guitar Jimi was the first one to ever make that or those sounds come out of a guitar. People had never heard anything like Jimi and unfortunetaley never will again. All the guitarist mentioned are awesome, but i would be willing to go out on a limb and say that if any of them ever got to see jimi, which i'm sure they did, they might have thought to themselves (how the hell did he do that, or what the hell was that crazy ass sound that i just heard)? Ok i'll shut up now , but it just makes me angry when people try to make Jimi seem like just a flash in the pan, and not give him the respect he desereves.

I just read a bio on Hendrix. The ending was Sex Drugs and Rock N Roll. Well mostly drugs untill he ended up killing himself. I hate to insite a riot but you can say his music is great and worship him for it, but I find it hard to respect him.

I found tons of stuff from Steve Hackett's website, It's pretty good. Mark Knopfler was a dead end. He wants you to pay for each concert. I've also found quite a bit of concerts on bluestraveler.com. I'm ever searching for more and more stuff to fill my massive music library at work. Can you guys think of anyone else I should look up?

More on Steve Hackett:

He's my second favorite guitarist after TR, I've recommended him a few times. He is all around an amazing musician, artist, and composer. I'll keep "pimping" him until I'm dead and gone.

For acoustic/classical, everyone check out his Live Archive 2005.
For more prog rockish stuff, Spectral Mornings is fantastic.
For weird acoustic/orchestral/classical/weird rock mix check out To Watch the Storms.

I'm a huge fan of Prog-rock, but for some reason have never really tried to get into Yes. I guess the album "Fragile" is the place to start, as I work with a big Yes fan, so I promise to make it one of my purchases this year.
