OK, as I was telling Pam a few days ago, if there is one great thing that this board has always been, it is a place to turn people onto great music and/or be turned on to something great by others. In that vein, it's time for some year end awards. Here are mine:

I got into Chris Whitley just a few months ago. After hearing him discussed here I figured I should check it out. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. I can't really think of any other musicians that I was turned on to this past year.
I'm having a hard time thinking of movies. I still haven't seen Wedding Crashers so I'm going to have to watch that very soon. I've never seen anything with Vince Vaughn in it that I didn't like.
How about shows some of you may have attended over this past year? I got to see more TR shows this year than any other year. Got to see him play 3 different gigs. I may have to make a road trip when he hits Ohio. |

Old artists: Dr. Hook! That shit is great! My dad bought the album "Sloppy Seconds" to have their stuff again, and made me listen to it. It's great.
My album of the year Soft Dangerous Shores.
Brian Eno's newest album, Another Day on Earth, is great
Steve Hackett's Metamorpheus is great, along with his live archive.
Films:
March of the Penguins ( I saw it and I loved it, I know, I know )
Four Brothers
Munich (really excellent, made up for Spielberg's War of the Worlds stinker)
And on a separate note...
Maybe it's because I didn't read the books and didn't know what to expect, but I freaking hated Chronicles of Narnia. The kids spent half the movie bitching and moaning, and it really pissed me off. I won't say any more, but I was not a fan. |

Arthen, I couldn't agree with you more... Narnia was nothing more than false advertizing. The previews made it look all crazy like Lord of the Rings, and instead I get a long kids movie. I was very dissapointed, and it was waaaay more religious that I had expected.
Similarly, I was pretty dissapointed with King Kong. I don't want to riun anything for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but there was sooooo much that just left me shaking my head in that movie. I'm pretty much giving up on blockerbusters, they all suck now. |

For album I think I'd have to go with Coldplay X&Y.
Book would have to be Freakonomics... it's just so, cool.
Movie... maybe just because it's fresh in my mind, but Munich was unbelievable, allthough I haven't seen Kong yet and I still have high hopes. Narnia blew, the kids were terrible. Batman and Star Wars were definitely highlights. |

| I was always kind of intimidated by his reputation, but after getting into prog a lot more this year, the album is extremely accesible in terms of the rest of his catalogue. It is an album I find myself listening to in the dark, while trying to go to sleep. I mean that in a positive way of course. |

For the record, I think Coldplay new album is a FAT, steaming, pile of shit. This coming from someone who bought the other 2 on their release dates and owns all of their B-sides. Sucky album, 2 good songs maybe, they've gotten way too formulaic and corny. Think U2 of today.
I'd have to agree with Soft Dangerous Shores, that album fucking wails. I like the post-industrial tinge to it. And Breath of Shadows is a song everyone should hear at least once, the song is a measure of Whitley's greatness. Banjo-riffic.
A few other great 2005 albums:
Tim Reynolds - Parallel Universe (C'mon guys.)
The Bad Plus - Suspicious Activity (Not counting the actual suspicious activity produced by the CD-ROM, thanks Dave. The jazz trio does it again.)
John Mayer Trio - Try (You like electric blues? Don't count this guy out.)
Artists I've overlooked until now:
Martha Mooke - Think TR with a 5-string viola.
Joanna Newsom - Awesome voice, lyrics, + harp = sweet.
Movies: I didnt see a single in movie in the theaters...they are all shitballs. If someone made a good film I think I'd die.
DVDs: Kids in the Hall s.3, Seinfeld s.5&6, Arrested Development s.2
(I dont watch television, so I gotta buy my fave shows), Aeon Flux Box Set, Monty Python Box Set (16 DVDs for $110, how can you go wrong?) |
