Lately ive been slapping my low string in a slight mimicry of tim, but ive realized that the slapping technique cant be emulated even if you knew the correct "notes". What i think that is, is a combination of tims experience throughout the years plus his knownledge of the bass guitar. After years of practice hes able to get Wayfarer and Reliable Sources style slaping down to a nice T.
When i attempt to slap, i just use my thumb and whack a downtuned low string. I practice by slapping simple scale type patterns on the low D (downtuned E), and trying to mix that in with strumming patterns or picking patterns, ala Decline In Reason. It doesnt sound good, but i keep practicing, cause its so damn cool to listen to

Yeah, that slapping stuff is pretty cool...but hard to do. Especially if you listen to some of the stuff where he's doing it so fast you swear hes got like 4 hands or something. But like Erich said, practice practice practice.
