Wow, just experienced my first Tim show live. All I can say is he left me exactly as he said, "A little more confused". |

Welcome to the board, and glad you liked the show! BTW, did you get to see the opening act? Matt is a member of this board, there is a thread here about the show and his opening for TIM. Just scroll down a bit. I hope you stuck around after the show to meet TIM.

Unfortunately I didn't get to hear Matt Winn, but my roomate did and picked up his album. First thing it reminded me of was Kaki King - so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. =) |

That's great that your roommate picked up a copy of Matt's cd! Better yet, that he must have liked his music enough to do so! Awesome!
Staunchy, welcome to the board! So where do you live now? Anywhere near one of Tim's concerts?

Hey everyone! On behalf of Matt Winn, who, I'm sure, will be posting here soon, thanks to all the people who came to the show at the Blue Gator a bit early. In the Delaware area, we know Matt can entertain a crowd, but it was great to see everyone there getting into the music. That kind of support makes a 7 hour drive there (and 8 and a half back--traffic) very easy to deal with. Not that we wouldn't have been happy just driving out for Tim's show, which was AMAZING. If you're interested, check Matt out at www.mattwinn.com. He may not like talking about how good he is, but I have no problem doing it.

Hey Josh, thanks for the post! Will you be seeing Matt Tues night at Grape Street? I hope to attend and bring my son who will be a senior at PSU this fall. He goes to main, I assume you are still attending PSU. What year and what campus? Hope to see you there.

Saturday’s show was a head-first dive into the oasis of excitement in the middle of the desert of confusion. I arrived at the venue early enough to load in and catch dinner at the downstairs restaurant (which turned out to be excellent). I talked with the crew at soundcheck and things seemed pretty tight. I learned that the soundman had actually spent time working with Michael Hedges, who is another guitar hero of mine (and pioneered the playing style that I use), so I knew I was in good hands. In typical form, Fluffy was lively and happy to see me, and TIM was methodically working on his guitar, cast off in his own zone of concentration. My show started with only a small portion of the crowd that would eventually come in and pack the place. I had my hometown support (my girlfriend, two other friends from Delaware, and two from Virginia) so I felt right at home in a place over four hundred miles away. Normally I would expect to be so excited that I’d play through my whole hour-long set in about 23 minutes, but somehow I maintained control. The crowd seemed to get a kick out of some of my stuff, which felt good. While I was gathering my stuff backstage after the show, Tim came by and said he enjoyed the set, which momentarily stopped my vital organs, thankfully reinstated by Lyn, who was at hand. TIM came on in a mask and cape, and I already knew where the night was going. Opening up with Rheginos and the Resurrection, we could all tell that his hands were on fire, and his mind was getting there too. Before the set, Fluffy had done me a favor by asking Tim to play the Wayfarer, and sure enough, our main man deep fried us all with some smooth melody before crashing into full-throttle bass slaps. The crowd went crazy and my friends (who had never seen TR before) turned to me as if *I* could explain what was happening. Yeah, right! Josh said “and god spake, and he hath said the laws of physics shall not apply to this man.” He played Che, and our Brains were no longer in the building. Good lord, what a song. Tim truly was on fire, and he was crazy, too! He adorned us with stories about his dreams- The one I recall was about spoons knives and forks marching around, chasing him with flags that said they’ll come and take him away… apparently at 3am, the alpha waves induce kitchenware paranoia. In response to the obligatory crowd chants of “stream!!!,” our hero stared right at the crowd repeating, “hypnotic … dancing … jesus … hypnotic … dancing … jesus…” over and over and then went into the 12-string rendition of the song that is probably responsible for many of our first interests in TR. I believe it was after this tune that he began randomly commenting in various real or made-up languages. TR busted out the fender strat and I thought to myself, “oh no, the crowd isn’t ready for this incipient madness…” When playing Radar Contact (my favorite of his electric tunes), TR played that rapid succession of harmonics that made Josh’s jaw move in directions previously uncharted by the field of osteopathic medicine. The whole crowd was movin’ and shakin’ as TR blasted us into another universe with crunchy riffs and high-speed fingerwork. The set approached the end and TR headed off stage. The crowd was still cheering and I led the charge for an encore performance. He came back, to our delight, and paced around the stage searching for the right instrument (out of four guitars) for his encore. He played the classic, “All You Need is Love” … on one foot. I have a picture. At the end with the canons of “love is all ya need… love is all ya need,” he spoke with different voices, prompting my friends to conclude that “it’s all of his personalities singing at once in succession!” He then regaled us with another rocking electric tune before signing off for the night. It was an experience that was truly memorable, but hopefully won’t be once-in a lifetime. The crew treated me well and offered some nice commentary, which makes me hopeful that I might open for Tim once again someday. Maybe sometime soon, Fluffy can post a review of my CD, which I gave him at the venue. As for now, I'm back in the Philly area/ DE valley plodding away. BTW Pam - Josh will be a grad student at PS this fall but sadly is not yet old enough to come to the show at the GSP :( I Hope to bring some more friends out to that one though. Hope to see you there!
I hope some more board members were at the show- I really hope to see some more reviews! Peace -Matt
