hey, thought i'd wish all you americans a happy memorial day. we don't have it in canada but i still hope everyone has a good one. we have the equivilant (rememberance day<--my birthday too) where we lay reeves and and pay respect to the veterans. what are some traditions you guys have for this day? anyway, just have a good TIMe.

Im biased because I dont exactly like holidays. Most holidays, IMHO, are exploitations. While memorial day has good sentiments, I feel it best to honor them all year, same as all other days of honoring (mothers day, fathers day, etc...).

While it's nice to get days off from work / school sometimes, I feel that all business-affecting holidays should be "floaters", taken when the person who wishes to celebrate feels like taking them. I hate having my days screwed up because of slow mass transit and closed markets, all because of a holiday that I dont feel like celebrating on its "official" day.

actually it is. and it wouldn't matter if it was as long as the american list. people were still killed, it doesn't have to be a large number of people, we still show respect. there were also 701 canadians killed in iraq over the past few months. that was a pretty rude comment, guitarispimp, did it make you feel like a bigger person?

Fuck Memorial Day. On what day do we Americans remember all the people we stomped on to have our lovely little Dia de Memoria? Shit on that.

yeah. fuck memorial day. all those guys who fought during WWII? fuck them. they weren't fighting for a worthy cause. people who laid down their lives for something they believe in shouldn't be honored, if it's not something you believe in. SARCASM'D.

Dan P at first I couldn't believe what I was reading then I saw the SARCASM'D bit... that was funny. HRW if I were you I'd buy an eco-friendly plane or boat, and search the seas for an island, and start my own perfect country free from wars and strife and built on the notion of peace and harmony and hope nobody (US or otherwise) comes along to try and regulate my country! 'Cause then I'd kick their... wait a sec... um... negotiate peacefully, yeah that's it!

But I'm not you. Actually if I thought that'd work I'd do it myself.

I, like the vocal majority in this thread, disagree with HRW. HOWEVER, though it may seem ironic at a base level, the people that died that we honor died to protect HRWs right to state that opinion . Im not fond of the "if you dont like it, leave!" mentality, only because not liking it and saying something is what those veterans died for.

oh yeah, definitely don't think they should be booted out, just a suggestion, more of a rhetorical joke, hope nobody took it the wrong way...

i don't like the love it or leave it thing because it's just a stupid thing to say in seriousness. because first, what's that thing in america that's pretty cool oh yeah it's different opinions. and secondly, what if the person doesn't want to leave? what if he wants to sit here and complain? and you going to make[/i] him leave? if not, don't bother saying it.
