Just wanted to say that. Hope everyone has a good one with much to be thankful for!
This one's for Erich: Pam on Thanksgiving: It's all about family and being thankful. Yes food seems a big part, but for my family at least, it isn't the amount of food, but special foods that bring back memories of years past. Traditions. If it was all about the food, I sure wouldn't have spent all day yesterday cooking and baking so I could pack it all up today, drive for 2 hours, to be with my parents(who can no longer travel) and my sister and family.
If it was between eating hotdogs with my folks and family or eating a festive turkey dinner at home, the hotdogs and family would win out every time!

| i think it's good to see a holiday based on food. i mean, all holidays are based on something they don't admit. new years makes the pretense of being about ringing in the new year, but really it's about drinking. christmas makes the pretense of being about christ (even though christ wasn't even born in winter) but really it's about gifts. (see erich's christmas post) president's day, veteran's day, memorial day, columbus day are all about not going to school or work. not thanksgiving. thanksgiving says "i'm about eating food and how do you like that?" it's an honest holiday. |

Thanks PJK. I'm actually happy to see that people have evolved this into a holiday based on food. Growing up on the east Coast, New England to be exact, I was taught the "story" of the Pilgrims and Indians. It was really confusing as a young child, and became increasingly hard to take being who I am.
When I got to college I had an amazing Cultural Anthropology teacher who spent the day before the holiday, telling the class what I felt was/is, a more accurate history of Thanksgiving.
For me it's about Harvest time,leading up to the Solstice. I take my son to pick Kiwi on the coast of CA here we live,with friends. And now I get to cook a bit too. I hope you all have a wonderful warm holiday however you celebrate. Peace, Robin |

| Mine was okay, I guess...There was a German family there, people I've never met before, that seemed to very much enjoy Thanksgiving with us. So did their four children. They didn't speak much English. I don't know why they were there. Curious. |

What sort of bad image could we have. In fact, what is our image at all? I have no clue what most Americans know about Canada.
On a more Thanksgiving related note: We always get our Santa Clause parade this time of year and i never understood why because it seems to early from christmas.
It's because to you guys it's the thankgiving parade, we do it at the same time. |

Gotta agree with guitarted and thomasode, I love both syrup and hockey, especially hockey of which I am joining hockey fans everywhere who are afflicted with serious hockey withdrawal! I watched parts of different re-runs of games on TV, but it just doesn't do anything for me. I want hockey back!
Erich, guess you could tell I got a kick out of your Christmas thoughts, even though, I told my kids all about Santa and never regretted doing so. Am I bad? Actually the "Santa" thing puts stress on parents too, but I guess I should save my thoughts on that for the Christmas thread. Anyway, it is always a thrill to read your thoughts Erich. |

| Well, this year just didn't work out for my family, we usually all meet up, but our schedules simply didn't allow it this year, so everyone was on their own. Luckily my girlfriend's sister had her family over and I was invited. It was great, ate too much, drank too much, then went to watch football, and fell asleep sitting up on the couch for an hour. Gotta love how Turkey puts you right out! The only hinderance was my damn ear infection, which I just wrote aabout in its own post. The most amazing part was that she lives in Los Angeles, and there was NO TRAFFIC either way. No traffic in L.A. is unheard of, and it was a friggin holiday!!! |

Funny about no traffic in LA! That reminded me of something.
I had one more thing to be thankful for this year. Thanks to the PA Tolltaker's strike, the turnpike was a flat fee of $2 no matter how far you went. I made out well since I had to travel on it to Lancaster on Thanksgiving and to Harrisburg today! I knew there was a good reason I procrastinated and never got EasyPass!

When we got digital cable the had the NHL network on for free. They had the top 20 games playign all the time.
I got to see:
1967 Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadians - Game 6 (the last time the leafs won the cup)
1970s on a new years eve - Montreal Canadians vs. (haha) Russia (tie game 3-3) |
