I have both a Netflix membership and the unlimited rentals thing from Blockbuster. I'm looking for any great films you can think of. The new releases section is ridiculously weak right now so I'm generally looking a little older. I like anything from a solid drama, to a clever comedy to a straightforward action film. I have about 300 movies right now so I have a lot of the big ones covered, but I'm looking for those diamonds in the rough I may have missed.
Any suggestions? Thanks! |

If you haven't seen The Office, a BBC comedy, you should definitely add that to your netflix list.

Many thanks! Some of these I'd seen, but plenty I haven't. It's at the point where my girlfriend is telling me what movies to rent because I can't think of any. Although Elf was reasonably funny. |

One of the movies that comes up on the BOARD alot is Cube. Have you watched that (or its sequel) yet?
Last night, Fluffy and I watched a good foreign flick called The Cuckoo. (It was one I'd planned to rent on Netflix, but now I don't have to.) I have a good time exploring the foreign films since you can find some really good stuff -- and some really weird stuff. Traffik, a British mini-series, was WAY better than the American movie Traffic. Anything by Pedro Almodovar is usually quite interesting, although I didn't think High Heels was that great.
Goodbye Lenin is a relatively new German film I really enjoyed. I rented it after my trip to Berlin (where I ran my fastest marathon yet!) in September.
I'm not sure if it's actually foreign, but The Name of the Rose, starring Sean Connery, recently came out on DVD also. It has Christian Slater in it, but I think all the other actors are European.
All the other suggestions on the list are really good too. I rented Boondock Saints on a lark and thought it was great! If you liked American History X, there are also Romper Stomper (not as good, but about Australian skinheads) and The Believer (a powerful story loosely based on a real-life Jewish skinhead).
If you like to watch CSI, there's a BBC "dark ages" version called Brother Cadfael, about a monk who investigates murders in the 14th century. |

Paris Texas, and Whale Rider. Also, there are two great surf movies that you don't have to be a surfer to love. Step into liquid, and Riding Giants. Both really about the culture as well as the love of the ocean. Plus the waves are amazing! The stories are very moving as well. Peace, Robin |

If you like surfer documentaries (Step into Liquid was great), I suggest Dog Town & Z-Boys. It's about the birth of modern skateboarding. |
