I'm such a sucker for remasters/reissues so this one has me excited: Next week, Universal is releasing a 10 year anniversary edition of Downward Spiral. This looks like it is worth owning:
This SACD/Hybrid DELUXE EDITION of THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL celebrates the 10 Anniversary of the modern masterpiece.

I'm not a fan of NIN, but I can vouch for the quality of SACD. When I was trying to find a new home theater for my bedroom I specifically looked for one with SACD so I could get Dark Side of the Moon in 5.1. It's mindblowing. I also have a couple other SACD's, like Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde and Duke Ellington/Count Basie (Duke on one channel, Basie and his band on the other).
If a casette tape is like FM radio, and a CD is like listening from the mixing board outside a soundroom, SACD is being inside the soundroom itself with the artist playing for you.

Crazy to think that downward is 10 years old. doesnt seem like it.
anyway, im lookin forward to NIN's new album. no clue what it will sound like, but it will be good no doubt.
and dave fuckin ghrol plays drums on it.... so its got to be something special. |

I did my own research on SACD, and aparently there are still audiophiles who dislike it, and there are still problems inherant to the technology. Because of severe white noise at inaudable frequencies, there has to be some noise shaping, so its not a pure map of the sound. and there are some people who claim SACD makes the sound distant, while adding white noise to drums.
Ive never sat and listened to SACD before to compare it to anything else, so I cant actualy give my personal comments. Im just honestly wondering why we havent come out with the definitive digital format that maps soundwaves perfectly yet, if DSD (the technology sony/phillips created to use on SACD) isnt it.
But I guess its a step up. Also, Blue-Ray discs are now being introduced to the market, so soon we'll be seeinging HD-DVDs + SACD. sick thought, huh? |
