I posted those pics because the first and third are funny, and the second is interesting.
The second post happens to be from a protest of sorts in SF last night. You know, people voicing themselves.
Yes dan, we should all just keep our mouths shut and play video games and guitar like you and squash anything anyone is trying to say that doesn't match exactly what you are thinking.
I should have listened to you before the election. Voting is for assholes. If you believe in anything you are a tool.
Fuck, CPPJames sorta has your viewpoint but at least he isn't a dick about it.
You are the reason I've avoided the political debates threads on here for the last few weeks. You've got the reverse-midas touch. Every political thread you touch turns to shit.
You are entitled your bleak opinions, but may I suggest leaving the house before developing them. |

yeah, god knows wanting to unify america is bleak. if "fuck middle america" is what you have to voice, then you have nothing of substance to say. there is nothing positive about saying "fuck middle america." i'm not saying we should all just keep our mouths shut about everything and sit around doing nothing. i am saying that holding up signs that assult entire portions of the united states around is not helping anything. this is my opinion. stop squashing it.
and why do you think i squash everyone's opinion? yeah, i don't hide behind a laid back, accepting facade. it's aggressive. that's how i am and that's how i like me. but read the meaning, not the words. the only opinion i agree with completely is mine. the only opinion you agree with completely is yours. and that's how it should be.
i'd like you to point out where i said believing in anything makes you a tool. you might have to make it up, because i never said that. i believe in things, too. just because they don't match up with anything here doesn't mean i don't have beliefs. my beliefs are bleak. i don't understand your "leave the house" statement. my guess is you're trying to tell me i don't have enough real world experience to form opinions. way to try to squash my opinions. the fact of the matter is you don't know anything about me, and your judgement is off base and off point. |

voting is for assholes is my opinion. and what if it is my opinion that we should all play videogames and guitar and keep our mouths shut? here i am voicing my opinion and you're saying it turns everything into shit. well i say the sf protest is turning things into shit. so where does that leave us? careful getting off your horse, it's a long way to fall. cppjames isn't as much of an asshole, true, but does that have to do with anything.
i'll make it easy for. i'm not going to voice my opinions here anymore. that is what you wanted, isn't it? so you can feel comfortable in voicing yours? so be it. it's obvious the meaning of everything i've said has not actually sunk in. |

I was in the process of going through previos threads to find examples of what I'm accusing you of, but I'll just answer the last post.
Keep posting your opinions, just stop being a dick about it. I come here for civil discourse, not nancies.org-esque banter. I've asked you to do this before. For someone who pushes his opinions so hard regarding any subject, I find it to bash someone else's opinion in these political threads.
For example: You call people assholes for voting, yet yell at the people who voted, trying to make a difference, when we complain about the middle of America.

you call me dick for what you precieve as bashing other people's opinions, and yet i'm still looking at the fuck middle america picture. and what i see is a young man bashing the opinions of a huge amount of people the same way you think i do. why is it that you aren't upset with him? i think it's because he agrees with you.
you seem to think that voting gives you the right to bash other people's opinions, and really, i don't understand. maybe it's because you think voting this year matters. and if that makes me you feel better, then by all means, hold it tightly. but the fact remains. fuck middle america isn't doing anyone any good. it's still non-constructive bashing, which you seem to be against. |

haha. well that's your opinion. yes. my opinion, on this particular topic at least, is fuck everyone. maybe that's a little over top and a little too angry. but the anger comes from what i see as people taking an already bad situation and making it worse. the conservatives are being total jerks in their victory. i know i should expect that, but it still makes me angry. they're just pissing everyone else off. the liberals have totally lost heads. they calling for the end of the world, i heard someone suggest we beat up the population of ohio, they're saying that there won't be any air left to breathe. and none of it helping. it's just making it worse. it's dividing us and agitating at a time when, though we might be total opposites, we should not be this out of control and pissed off. we can't afford that now. there's no time for it. it's not making anything better. that's why my attitude is fuck everyone. that's why it will remain until we get our fucking acts together. it's not even pure anger for me. it's frustration to the point of anger. |

i felt that zach's other post was asshole-ish. obviously not his latest one, which is well thought out, but the one before that.
i guess i have been projecting what i've been seeing in general to the people here. it's a vice of mine. it's hard to tell when i say "you" and mean "a group of people at large that may not be posting here, or even know about the board" and when i say "you" and mean "you specifically." i think the english lanuage could do with a "you" single and "you" plural. like spanish. |

I was being an ass. Because I'm not very happy right now. Not because dubya is in office but because of why and the fact that they gained momentum. I feel like the country just shot itself in the foot and it's mostly because of moral beliefs based from religion that he got back in power. That pisses me off. I've been being an ass since wednesday morning cause I've just being angry and not rational. |

Then Zach:

He can't PERIOD! Because "right" has to do with the scary topic of religion, which everyone knows is a human construct. And since no human can put his views above someone else's, Zach actually IS right! But there's a catch... everyone else is right, too. And wrong, because 2+2 can't equal both 4 AND 5. Think about it.
Also from Zach:

In all seriousness, I'm not being a smartass... Thank you for that, at least. |

Yes but I find that the difference in that I try to base my decisions on logic and study. I'm not saying I'm right but someone who gleefully accepts what a church has to tell them on faith can't really offer up many reasons to show why they think they do other than that's what they believe. So everyone thinks differently and I'm just trying to offer up what I think and show why I think it to others. They'll do the same but like I've said a thousand times they can say this is right and the buddhists can say that is right and I'm just more into a scientific approach that doesn't set something in stone but tries to prove hypothesis' and make conclusions based off data. |

But the first rule of logic is you can't prove your first postulate? if you make any statement, even one so simple as "the chair sits in the corner", if you keep asking yourself "why?" like a kid does to annoy his sister (I speak from experience) you'll end up going in circles. Nothing can be proven absolutely. |

but that doesn't mean nothing is true. take that chair in the corner. the chair exists in the corner and i can prove it. let's say i light it on fire and put it next to your propane tank. if you didn't believe the chair was real, you'll start believing real quick after that. |

True.....nothing can really ever be proven....but science can validate most things. And we all know how well science and religion get along. However, I think what therippa and dan are trying to say is that religion can't be your reason for making all of your decisions. Let's use your example, with the chair, Muskrat. From a scientific standpoint, you can draw all sorts of conclusions from experimentation and experience.....like that chair will continue to sit there unless there is some sort of outside stimulus......or it will break if I hit it with this sledgehammer. You could also determine that the chair is made up of atoms packed densely enough to resemble a chair, or something like it. From a religious standpoint, the answer would be "because God put it there". Logically, the scientific approach has more merit...however, people seem to flock toward the latter.....perhaps because it's easier to understand...you know....less confusing.
As an isolated incident, this doesn't mean much. However, people tend to take this point of view and project it to everything else. And they grasp onto their beliefs so tightly that they refuse to believe (maybe that isn't a good word to use....let's say "accept") what is right there in front of them. Example.....you said in another post that homosexuality is a choice.....which I can't comprehend because I never recall telling myself to become heterosexual. And if it was a choice....then I'd be able to "become gay" whenever I wanted. So could you. So when is the choice made? Before puberty? Before birth? Because if I was able to choose my sexuality before I could actually think....they I should have been able to choose if I would become a man or a woman.
Anyway...I've gone off topic....now that I think about it, way off topic. I'll just close with this....you said that religion is a human construct.....well, so is science. So why can't they get along? |

Dan, I wasn't trying to say that nothing is true, I was trying to disprove someone else's argument. Of course there is truth, a universal truth, that has been my point.
PCBTim, I wasn't the one who said that religion is a human construct, Erich said that in another thread. Maybe that'll clear up some confusion
quote: And if it was a choice....then I'd be able to "become gay" whenever I wanted. So could you.
Yes, that's basically what I'm saying. Let me see if I can explain what I believe (not trying to force anything on anyone, just trying to let you know what I think.) I view homosexuality as a temptation, although not one that I struggle with. An alcoholic or a drug addict struggles with temptations that I don't. The Bible mentions homosexuals who overcame their temptations. You may not believe the Bible, but I do, and that's where I get my reasoning.
Everyone has faith in something. This is a cliche, but you believe the world is round, but have you actually walked around it? (this is a rhetorical question, I'm sure there are some board members who actually have traveled around the world) If you haven't seen it with your own eyes, at the very least you are putting your faith in scientist and explorers who have proven that. Some say the world is millions of years old. Have you been around that long to really knowthat? Has any of us? But you say that science can prove it. But what's your backup? How do you know your measurements are accurate? Have you actually performed the experiments yourself? If not, you're putting your faith in someone who says they have. In a way, that can be blind faith just as much as you say I have blind faith in trusting the writings of men who lived 2000+ years ago. |

That's the point. I would rather side with science then the absolutism of religion. Especially when it fails to acknowledge so much empirical evidence. So I would rather reason through something and see if I can find an explanation as why it is wrong. I think if you can't do that outside of religion you should not subject everyone to that standard. |

May I remind you that this was started by you saying "Fucking Christianity!" I'm not trying to convince you to believe as I do, that almost seems a futile effort anyway. Dan was asking how and why I believe what I do, so I was only trying to give a background and explain WHY I think what I do. |

Ok it settled then I won't bash on christianity as a whole except for where that applies and I hope you won't try to push your religous standards on the rest of the country or world. BTW I hope we didn't get personal or too personal in these debates since I detected a note of it in the other thread. I sure that outside of our beliefs we probably would get along and mostly we should try to point out similarities and not differences between each other since I would imagine there are more similarities then differences. I know I need to take a step back and respect others beliefs at times and like I said I was pretty angry earlier on this week and I was pretty much ready to say fuck you to everyone. |

On the flip side, if if such a graphic existed displaying where the most crimes occurred, most of them would be in states that voted for Kerry.
And it all proves, that none of it means shit. |
