Listening to a little Gordian Knot. Before that, I just discovered a band online called Might Could. They are an acoustic guitar band, and their stuff is really interesting. They also have a hilarious section devoted to old NES covers. I figured people on this list might get a kick out of it, being fans of crazy guitar  Check it out: www.mightcould.net

I believe they said the nine drugs in his system weren't in quantities that would individually cause an overdose, so it had to be ruled natural. |

Wow, Stabbing Westward, good call. I haven't played them in a while, but I'll dig up that Wither Blister Burn and Peel album.
Dan P. : I don't understand how you think Radiohead is overrated, if you look at the music they play, its pretty complex, and for someone who likes Tim's music, they certainly know how to make good guitar noise. If you ever have the opportunity to see them live, I think you might change your mind. Same with The Shins, if you heard the whole 2001 album in its entirety you'd see some pretty cool stuff going on their musically and lyrically. Although I have noticed a personal difference in opinion from your posts, so I think you and I might be exact opposites with Tim as common ground. |

stabbing westward is awesome. i used to listen to them non stop.
i've heard plenty of the shins, and i'm not impressed. they don't suck, but they certainly aren't worth the praise they're given. also, i'm not really concerned about the lyrics. they have nothing to do with music.
i have also taken a look at some of radiohead's music. i have some of their sheet music lying around. i mean it's alright. but again, not worth the hype. not to mention all the pretension. |

Some sort of "companion cd" that I got when I got some other CD
The version of Jimi Thing from 8-23-03 @ Radio City Music Hall is one of my fav versions. Seek Up 3-20-03 Ryan Ctr is also excellent.
Tim just pours it on like icing.

Dan P: As far as the Shins, it's just the one album that really gets me, their newer one is subpar in contrast, it's just new and exciting to me is all. I think for me, the melodic changes in the lyrics is probably their strong suit, the one singer's voice is kinda cool.
With Radiohead, they just include a lot of non-pop musical ideas in rock songs without it sounding "pretensious." For example, check out Life in a Glass House, You and Whose Army, or Idioteque. These songs utilize some pretty off-the-beaten-path chordal voicings, that fit in well with Radiohead's kinda lounge-room vibe. I think if you checked out their latest album you might be interested. Even I as a pretty rampant fan wasn't taken immediately by it, but its complexities grow on you.
To update, Imaginary Time from GOTN just came on my Winamp...man it is smokin'. |

| yeah, those songs have some unusual sonorities. i guess what i don't like about them is there's not really much to latch onto aurally. i dislike a lot of shoenberg for similar reasons. the craft is fantastic, but it just doesn't do it for me. the shins still sound mediocre at best, though. |

I didn't want to start a new thread so I think what I want to ask can fit onto this one.
Anyone here ever listen to Jack Johnson? I was introduced to his music this summer and find it nice to listen to. He is coming to Philly Sept 10 and I might just try to go hear him play.
I am just curious to know what others of you might have heard or think of him. Thanks in advance.
(As to what I am listening to now, too much to mention, but one song that keeps playing in my head and I have no clue as to why is American Dream by Simon and Garfunkel. Their concert in Central Park CD has been one of my steady plays for about a month now.) |

I like Jack Johnson a lot. His music is so mellow, it's cool.
Though my commercial design teacher overplayed one of his CDs to death, I got a little tired of him for awhile.
Anyways: Aphex Twin- Drukqs(entire album). |

I gave "A Trick of the Tail" a try, but without Peter Gabriel's help and lyrics, it just isn't the same.
I like Vertical Horizon, but I don't know enough about them. I'll have to pick up some of their stuff today. |

I've been listening to a lot of the bands that are featured on the show Scrubs...Cary Brothers, Old 97s, Josh Radin, Colin Hay, etc.
I also really like The Last Samurai soundtrack.....the movie wasn't that good, but the music is unbelievable. |

Funny that Jeff Buckly was talked about so much at the beggining of thi post, because just this past week or two, I finally discovered the brilliance of "Grace".
Other things I'm listening to right now:
- Chris Whitley "Soft Dangerous Shores" & Dirt Dloor (DVD version)
- NIN "With Teeth"
- Fiona Apple "Extraordiary Machine"
- Tonino Baliardo (This is the lead guitaist from the Gipsy Kings, he put out a solo cd, and it is one hell of an acoustic guitar album!!!)
- MF DOOM (probably the best underground hip hop guy right now)
- Sage Francis (another really cool underground guy)
I've also been watching a lot of the King Crimson "Eyes Wide Open" DVD.

honestly, i don't know. i lost the cover for it. i think it's the berlin philharmonic with von karajan conducting. it's not my favorite performance of it, but, you know, still fucking awesome.
i don't know about the connection to lord of the rings. it's about the volsunga saga, and sigurd's part in it specifically. he uses the volsunga saga, and the later midieval translation. yeah, there's andvari's ring that he put the curse on, but that's not at all the same at the one ring. |

i don't know about the connection to lord of the rings. it's about the volsunga saga, and sigurd's part in it specifically. he uses the volsunga saga, and the later midieval translation. yeah, there's andvari's ring that he put the curse on, but that's not at all the same at the one ring.
I wasn't trying to connect the two. Just for me I've got LOTR for literature, and the Der Ring for music. If they share anything it's thematic elements of Norse mythology. What is your favorite performance? |

i'm doing a paper on the influence of norse and greek mythology and culture had on tolkien, and how he reconciled and merged that with his own christian beliefs. there's a great deal. the idea of arate, ate, hubris and nemisis in heroes is everywhere in tolkien, as is pretty much everything to do with dragons in middle earth. i use feanor most, because he's easy to compare to prometheus, adam, and clearly follows the path of power, rash deed/promise/demand, pride and retribution. melkor follows that same path and is almost exactly like lucifer in origin and downfall. mandos' second prophecy of the north (melkor's return) is basically ragnorak. the idea of the fall man is seen and repeated in melkor, feanor and the numenoreans. also, the stuff in revelations about the dragon, the first beast and the second beast bears a striking resemblence to melkor's fall and sauron's "captivity" and subsequent subversion of the numenoreans to worship melkor.
my favorite version of der ring is one i heard in a conducting class. i don't know remember who conducted it or who was performing. it was something my professor had. that was a while ago and i never found out. |

God I love the Silmarillion. My roommate just picked up one of my copies of The Hobbit and started reading it. I'm subtly guiding him down the path.
What class is that paper for Dan? There has been a Religious Studies class offered at my University focusing on Tolkien/Lewis and their religious themes. I'm trying to take it next year, but I've heard it might get changed to a Harry Potter class, to update it and make it more popular, which would destroy any desire I had to take the course. |

| Arthen, those live Genesis discs are so awesome that it makes me want to buy the actual boxset (until I see the price tag that is). My favorite part is hearing Peter narrate the story in between some songs. I never knew how much of a straight story the album is supposed to be. Definately makes me listen to it in a different way. |

It's the "Annotated Lamb Lies Down on Broadway." It includes all of the different story parts Peter would say between songs, they have a lot. It also helps put the story into a more solid context.
And as for the boxset, disc four is kind of weak, I'm not gonna lie at all. There's one song on it that I really like "Let Us Now Make Love" but the rest is really rough and pretty immature compared to 1970s-1975s. Disc three is solid, the low point is the live "More Fool Me" which was the weakest song of the PG era anyways.
I love both versions, live and studio, but the live has that extra push, especially with one of my favorite guitar solos ever. That last two minutes of "The Lamia" when Steve Hackett brings all of the passion and power of his guitar. It's mind shattering. |

| The new Paul Simon album is AMAZING!!! I'm a huge fan, so it's a biased opinion, but I really like the album. Brian Eno provides electronics and soundscapes on the whole album. It's called Surprise. |

I am currently listening to Muse's Black Holes and Revelations. Really loving it. I like the diversity of styles in it.
Also listening to House of Freaks Cake Walk and Tantilla. Cake Walk is my new favorite CD. Maybe it is because the music has deeper meaning for me, but I am relating to so much of it on so many levels. |

I believe JK Rowling has said she does not see the books as religious. To ignore her and base a religious studies class on it would be quite disrespectful I think.
Not to mention that C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien are way cooler and probably a better basis for a religious studies course!

| I've actually been listening to Seal a lot lately. I got his "Live In Paris" album and it's amazing. I liked the acoustic disc from his best of album, but the production of the live show and the quality of his band are just outstanding. I'd highly recommend picking it up if you even remember who he is. |

| New cds purchased recently are the new Bob Dylan, the new Roots, new Audioslave, and the new Living Legends. All are good. The Audioslave was a bit of a dissapointment though. I really like them, but their songs are very formulaic. I think it would be cool if they took their music somewhere else. |

Hey Kevin, the Marcus Eaton CD I have now is The Day The World Awoke. I like it however I am really looking forward to hearing his solo Story of Now, which I just got word that my copy is backordered. 
The DTWA is easy listening, but too similar to DMB, John Mayer,Jack Johnson, etc. I like what he does, but I want to hear more. He definitely has talent, now I want to see what HE is made of. I heard cuts from Story of Now and from them, I feel he has grown a great deal from the DTWA.
I don't know much about Marcus other than the music I am discovering. Like I said, DTWA sounds just too much like what is already out there, not that there is anything wrong with that, LOL, but I am expecting that Story of Now will be more of his own sound. When I get it I will be sure to let you know what I think of it.

| So I've been seeing people creaming themselves over the Mars Volta for the past few years. I've always been meaning to check them out to see what all the fuss is about. They came out with a new cd last week called Amputechture. Besides John Fruscente playing on it, Rolling Stone compared it to an ols 70s King Crimson prog rock album, so I decided to pick it up, and it is pretty damn good. The 2nd track is over 20 mins, and there is some insane guitar work all over the disc. I guess I see what the fuss is all about now. |

I've been using the free service called last.fm, it keeps track of what you listen to on your computer (winamp, itunes, etc), and lets you listen to type of music people who like music you like listen to. I setup a group for the board...you all should join!
