| I've only recently become interested in Peter Gabriel and I was wondering if anyone has some songs they'd recommend, aside from the obvious ones. I'm fascinated with Mercy Street, I just love that song...just hoping there's some more songs that are as good. |

Well, James you came to the right place. Many of us here are big PG fans. I know Arthen will reply to this. Also Kevin.
My favorites of the lesser known songs are:
Biko (For Steven Biko who was murdered in South Africa during the Apartheid movement. My passion for that movement lends itself to my passion for the song)
Others Include:
Here Comes the Flood; Washing of the Water(I relate to this song on many levels); Intruder (love the wirey sound of this one); Family Snapshot; San Jacinto; Shock the Monkey; one that is really not like PG but rather like a barbershop quartet is Excuse Me; I love the entire OVO cd my favorite being Father/Son
I also really like Signal to Noise and I Grieve from the UP cd.

Pam... I think anything that I'd recomend you already did... go figure  I love PG though, so I'd like to get back to this! I love his live stuff... even the "obvious ones" have twists to them giving them a new edge. Oh, but there's Secret World also from UP I think... But yes, I Grieve... oh, gotten me through some times! |

With the lack of tolerable music out lately (that I have access to anyway), I've been digging myself into artists that I may have glazed over in the past. I got into a huge Zeppelin/Doors/Floyd kick for a long long time and eventually I just got burned out on them. So lately I've settled on Peter Gabriel after finding an album in our basement.
Thanks for the input! I'll check all those out and keep my ear to the thread, so to speak.

Peter Gabriel is one of the greatest artists/visionary/musician/etc.
Every song of his is good.
Songs that I would highly suggest:

The entire album. Every song on this album is amazing. But, The Family and the Fishing Net is the best. The imagery in the song is outstanding and the music is creepy and the tone is amazing. Just buy this album, it's only 8 songs which a lot of people don't like, but it's a perfect album.

Go out right now and buy Plays Live and Secret World Live. Secret World Live has Paula Cole on the entire show, and her voice adds another dimension to songs like "Don't Give Up", "Shaking the Tree", "Blood of Eden", and "In Your Eyes". I prefer her voice to Kate Bush, but that's just me.
After you really start to get sucked into Peter Gabriel, check out OVO and his soundtrakcs: "Birdy", "Passion" (For the movie: "The Last Temptation of Christ". The vocal part that Dave Matthews does before Warehouse with Tim comes from the title track), and "Long Walk Home".
He's my favorite artist of all time. After a while, other lyrics will sound less than par, because you get used to his intelligent, complex lyrics. |

I never knew that vocal part was from an actual song called "Passion"...I just figured it was because it was passionate =). Thanks for the info.
I can completely see myself loving his music. I like Dave a lot because I like jazzy rock and the lyrics are far from standard. I just can't express how I felt though the first time I heard Mercy Street. It was like it actually engulfed me for 5 minutes. I felt almost confused when it ended.
Tomorrow after work, I'm gonna go buy 3-4 albums and roll the dice on this guy cause from the little I've heard, I know I won't be disappointed.

| As it happens, one of my favorite things to do, is to turn people on to Peter Gabriel. It's like I'm a missionary of music. What album do you already have? If you plan on buying albums I'd suggest picking up Secret World Live, Peter Gabriel 3 (Melt), So, and Up to start off with. The great thing about Peter's music, is that it varies so much from album to album. If you want to hear a particular genre of music, he's probably involved in it. |

ahhhh Arthen, thats a tough one, I think I still have to go with Secret World, but I think Growing Up is amazing, love the maturity of his works. I really like the CD I bought of the concert I attended last year. Let's face it, PG is one of those rare artists that you really can't go wrong with.
I think Secret World is my favorite because of the memories attached to it. You know, a lot of how we feel about certain music is based on who we were with, what we did, etc when we listened to it. Some music just brings me right back to my college days as if no time has passed at all, in fact some brings me back much further than that.
Music is like smells, it can trigger memories so fast.
Three of my favorite deceased musicians are, Jerry Garcia, George Harrison and Jeff Buckley. Even though I never met any of them their music touched my life in a profound way and hearing their music makes me feel like they are still alive in this world. |

Just got finished reading one of my favorite sites and thought some of you PG fans would be interested in it if you don't already go there. It is Tony Levins site. He is PG's bass player, amazing musician in his own right, also plays the stick. I can't wait for him to finish touring with PG so hopefully he will take his band around to the local bars and play again. They are always a thrill to hear.
There is funny stories about PG's European Tour on there. He keeps a diary, fun stuff!

Tony Levin is a badass! When he does that thing where he has like slides on his fingers and he's pounding on the strings. That's so amazing. And when he plays the stick during "Solsbury" on SWL, he just rules.

| Well, while I was out browsing around town, I ended up buying "Long Walk Home" the soundtrack to the film: "Rabbit Proof Fence". It's great. It isn't as amazing as "Passion", but what could be. Do you have this one Pam? If not, you should definitely pick it up. That one melody from "Sky Blue", makes a few appearences throughout the songs. |

| I actually bought another copy of "Passion" yesterday. I had to get a remastered version of it, because the one I had was the original recording. Made a world of difference. My friends think I'm crazy, I think I'm smart. |

| Well, since I've been so into DVDs lately...I just went out and bought Secret World Live and Growing Up Live. I didn't realize he had concerts "in the round". Definitely an entertainer through and through. Riding a bike while singing Solsbury Hill was pretty interesting. So far I'm a bigger fan of Growing Up...quite possibly because it has Mercy Street on it. I'm thoroughly amazed at how well some of his songs translate to the stage. Granted, that's generally a function of the artist...but there are just some seriously eclectic sounds. Very pleasantly surprised. Haven't finished watching both of them yet, but I'll let you know how I feel about them at that point. Thanks for the suggestion(s)! |

| I debate with myself about which one is better, and while I like the overall set up and setlist of Growing Up Live, Secret World Live has superior versions of Digging in the Dirt, Secret World, and In Your Eyes. It also has San Jacinto, which is one of the more artful performances I've seen. And to top it off it has Paula Cole, who looks amazing and has one of the greatest voices ever. Sorry Melanie, you just can't compare. |

I agree Arthen, Paula is amazing! Her voice is on the money all the time. I am partial to Steam from Secret World, but also love the songs you mentioned.
Growing Up Live was amazing too. That is the show I saw from the second row, and there was no one in front of me! Truly the most amazing, powerful show I have ever been to. The energy level couldn't have been higher, and making eye contact with Tony Levin was a high light for me.
I have seen Tony and his band play at local bars here around Philly. He has so much energy. Like TIM, he and his band also hang out after the shows to sign autographs and talk with their fans. My respect for him, PG and David Rhodes is huge!
Really, I like both DVD's equally, just for different reasons. They stir different emotions in me, but both are equally powerful. |

And also, as much as I like Ged Lynch, Richard Evans, and Rachel Z, Manu Katche, Shankar, and Jean-Claude blow them out of the water.
It's a dream of mine to share the stage once with Peter Gabriel. I think the only way it could happen, is if I ever got to open for him, then I'd instantly get to go on stage during In Your Eyes. |

Arthen, you aren't the least bit crazy. I've bought the entire remastered collection over the past 2 years since they were released. I'll always buy a remastered cd if I have an old version, why settle for the inferior version???
About the DVDs, My vote goes for Growing Up Live... I just think the quality is just so amazing. |

| Hey guys, on www.petergabriel.com they have put up an audio/visual player, that if you click on it, it plays SEVEN SONGS from the European tour that just ended, while also showing a slide show of pictures, I just found it and the first song playing right now is San Jacinto, one of my favs!!!! |

| More good Peter Gabriel news! On the site they have posted information on a DVD compilation of all of PG's Music Videos! It doesn't give a set release date, but it sounds like it's practically finished! Hot damn! It's got a lot of different songs on it, like Zaar from Passion, Lovetown, and even Father, Son. |
