Oh yeah, we've got a lot to thank for that guy, aside from the the airport deal, he was a foreign affairs nightmere. It was the Reagan administration that funded the Taliban during most of the 80's to protect the oil lines from the Russians. It was also Reagan who approved the sale of US weapons to Iran, while simultaneously selling weapons to Iraq, and they were fucking at war with each other. When he sold weapons to Iran that was basically what pissed of Saddam so bad that he turned his back on us and attacked the Kurds. One book I read had an old administration member that said Reagan didn't even know the difference between Iran and Iraq half the time.

President Carter had begun helping the anti-Soviet mujahideen in Afghanistan during his final months in office. But American aid to what Reagan called "freedom fighters" did increase significantly during his administration. Helping the freedom fighters wasn't about oil, though; it was about winning the Cold War. If it had been about oil, he wouldn't have been covertly supporting freedom fighters in Angola, Nicaragua, Cambodia also.

One of a series of top-secret National Security Decision Directives (which have since been declassified) aimed toward taking down the Soviet Union was NSDD-32. It stated that the United States would seek to "neutralize" Soviet control and authorized the use of covert action and other means to support anti-Soviet groups. (Note: By supporting the freedom fighters covertly, he was able to avoid sending large numbers of U.S. troops into harms way. He should at least get brownie points for that!)

Even though his methods were classified, he made no secret of his goal. In a speech to members of the British Parliament, he said "the march of freedom and democracy ... will leave Marxism-Leninism on the ash-heap of history as it has left other tyrannies which stifle the freedom and muzzle the self-expression of the people."

Not trying to start an arguement but please don't call the people the US Supported in Nicaraua freedom fighters. They commited some terrible atrocities and I don't view that as someone fighting for freedom.

Ronald Reagan was far less a douchebag than most of the other presidents of the last century.

You can't judge who's the worst until way after each of their presidencies when more information and documents are released.

Speaking of that, I hear that Bill Clinton's book is supposed to be a big hit on the best seller list, unfortunately it's the list for fiction.

Depends on your definition of a douchebag though. He was most certainly a large douchebag and compared to other presidents I think he ranks right up at the top of the douchebag list. Him and his war on terror and communism which mostly ended in him supporting the contras in Nicaragua (and others like them) that would literally go through and massacare villages and just do terrible things. Then unemployment during his tenure was the highest it had been since the depression and then the military spending went through the roof at that same time. He also gave the country a nice deficit. I can go on but he's a pretty big douchebag in my eyes.

What you are assuming is that those things were president specefic. I'd say ninety percent of the things that happen while a president in office, would have occurred even if someone else was president.

it's weird.

this post is titled "hilarious:" yet within it is probably the most boring conversation ever. i just wanted to point something ironic out. had i known it would spawn another political debate that ultimately amounts to nothing (which i should have) i would have kept it to myself.
