I don't know if I've mentioned on the BOARD that I'm learning to ski... I tried it a couple of time in the States (all in the Lake Tahoe area) but never really got excited about it. People told me to give a try in Europe since "it's different there."
Well, my new(ish) boyfriend John is a skiing fanatic, so I've been trying very hard to improve since January. During our ski trip to Austria over MLK weekend, all I could ski was blue (beginner) runs and the two times I accidentally found myself at the top of a red (intermediate) slope I actually cried -- from fear.
I made a goal to take more lessons, improve my ability to control my speed, get better at parallel turns, etc., and to be able to ski a red without crying by the time I went skiing in France in March (last weekend). On Saturday I paid 70 EUROS for three hours of private lessons, but still stayed only on blue. I almost thought I wasn't going to get the courage, but at the last minute on Sunday -- for my last run of the day -- I decided to do a red slope. It was next to (but steeper than) the blue I had just gone down twice, so I decided to go for it.
I managed to ski (slowly) down the slope WITHOUT falling -- or crying! Woo hoo! Now I just hope I don't lose my nerve to try another intermediate slope since I won't be skiing again until next Winter... |

Good Job Teri, my 2 brothers have each broken legs skiing, and thus I have never had the desire to try it. I stick to safer things like backyard wrestling thank you very much! |

Way to go Teri! I loved skiing as a kid, but haven't done it in years. I know all about the fears of going on an intermediate or higher level slope but it is fun if you allow yourself to enjoy it rather than fear it.
I am sure next year after warming up on the blue slope you will go for the red and not think twice about it. Either way, I am proud of you! BTW, now you can buy all those cute ski jackets, etc! |

Great job!! I've been skiing for over 10 years (ok...so only like once a year but still) and I just tried my first black diamond this January. I was scared as hell. The trick is to simply not look down the run. Then, afterwards, you look up and say "Did I really do that? Look how steep that is!!" |

I will definitely try that!
John is really hoping I'll get to the black slopes soon since that's where all the good scenery is. He went down from near the top of the peak at Chamonix (photo in my Yahoo! album) and it took him about an hour to get back to the mid-point on the mountain (where I was waiting with a friend) since he stopped to take photos of the gorgeous view. He saw blue glacier ice and even witnessed a small avalanche on another slope. He was so jazzed when he got done his eyes were sparkling with adrenaline. He kept saying "If only you could have been there!"

Since I ski more often than once per year maybe I'll get to those black slopes as quick as he hopes... |

That's awesome Terri! You're really inspiring me! I went snowboarding in VT in December. My boyfriend lead down the wrong trail (trying to show me I could do it... HA!) and I pretty much cried down the whole way... on my ass. But after a bit,and back on the blue, it got better! I was still on my ass a lot, but the tears came to a hault. It's probably not much of an investment as long as I live in FL, but if I ever go north bound, I would for sure consider taking lessons if you think they helped your skill!!!
And congrats! Things like that are hugely exciting! |

By the way Teri, congrats on the boyfriend! You should post some better pics... hard to see you two in those skiing pictures. I have to see the guy and see if I approve of him or not. |

Actually John is the photographer. He's got a little digital camera that he carries around everywhere. It's about half the size of Fluffy's since it uses little memory cards rather than minidiscs. |

Hey Teri, you know I approve! No, I encourage! LOL I am a sucker for love!
I went to see Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnnette play at the Kimmel Center the other night and their oncore was "When I Fall in Love." It was so beautiful my eyes filled with tears!

Sorry to dredge this one up from the depths, but last weekend I skied a BLACK run!
I took a week of lessons just after Christmas (during my ski week with the girls) but this was the first weekend of skiing with John since then. He did some wild skiing with the guys the first day, but skied with me on Sunday. We stuck to reds (which mostly I can now do with confidence) all day and he was really impressed with my improvement.
On our way back to the top of the mountain, he asked if I would mind trying a well-groomed, short black run. He assured me there was a red right to it in case I looked at it and chickened out. So I agreed to give it a look. It wasn't too icy, and I could see the chair lift at the bottom, so I decided to go for it.
Much like last year's experience, I took it VERY slow and easy, but I managed to get to the bottom without falling. Hopefully he won't use this experience to pressure me to do a black every time we ski. |

I am equally impressed, Teri! That's great. I went skiing a long time ago. The only thing I remember is tumbling down a slope losing my hat in the process. I haven't skied since. |

Sweet! Keep going for the blacks and they will get easier every time. My brother is a fanatic and he can really ski some crazy stuff and do all the tricks like 540's such. He's more into skiing the mountain though then the park. Me I'm just a casual go up and cruise down the blacks for a while a couple times a year. Stay with it cause it's really fun once you can just take it easy as you fly down the slopes. |

I went skiing a couple days ago, my once a year day-trip to Bear Creek in PA... they don't have any red slopes there, just green circles, blue squares, black diamonds and double black diamonds... they used to have a triple black diamond but for some reason they did away with it. I've been down a few blacks but mostly I'm not so much into fear and pain, so I stick to the smaller ones now. |

In Europe, they use only a color code (no shapes) and it is slightly different from the one in the U.S.:
Green = Beginner (bunny slope) Blue = Advanced Beginner Red = Intermediate Black = Advanced |
