I Don't Wanna Grow Up
(Tom Waits/K. Brennan)
When I'm lyin' in my bed at night I don't wanna grow up Nothin' ever seems to turn out right I don't wanna grow up How do you move in a world of fog That's always changing things Makes me wish that I could be a dog When I see the price that you pay I don't wanna grow up I don't ever wanna be that way I don't wanna grow up
Seems like folks turn into things That they'd never want The only thing to live for Is today... I'm gonna put a hole in my TV set I don't wanna grow up Open up the medicine chest And I don't wanna grow up I don't wanna have to shout it out I don't want my hair to fall out I don't wanna be filled with doubt I don't wanna be a good boy scout I don't wanna have to learn to count I don't wanna have the biggest amount I don't wanna grow up
Well when I see my parents fight I don't wanna grow up They all go out and drinking all night And I don't wanna grow up I'd rather stay here in my room Nothin' out there but sad and gloom I don't wanna live in a big old Tomb On Grand Street
When I see the 5 o'clock news I don't wanna grow up Comb their hair and shine their shoes I don't wanna grow up Stay around in my old hometown I don't wanna put no money down I don't wanna get me a big old loan Work them fingers to the bone I don't wanna float a broom Fall in love and get married then boom How the hell did I get here so soon I don't wanna grow up

I am grown up and I don't wanna be, BUT I don't want to be a kid again either so basically I guess I'm screwed!
BTW great lyrics/poem |

Being a grown up isn't that bad as long as you make time to still do the things that made being a kid so much fun.
YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY SEEN THIS BUT I LOVE IT SO I THOUGHT I'D POST IT.
Close your eyes....And go back.... Before the AOL, MSN and DSL... Before semi automatics and crack Before SEGA or Super Nintendo... Wayyyyyyy back.......
I'm talkin' bout Hide and Go Seek at dusk. Red light, Green light. Playing kickball & dodge ball until your porch light came on. Mother, May I? Red Rover Hula Hoops Running through the sprinkler on a hot summer day...
Wait...... there's more....
Watching' Saturday Morning cartoons Josie & the Pussycats, The Flintstones, Speed racer, Fat Albert, Road Runner, Scooby Doo, Shazamm, G-Force & He-Man.... Wonder Woman & Super Man Underoos... Playing Dukes of Hazard, Batman & Robin, Good guys against the Bad guys...
Christmas morning, (yeah!) Your first day of school, Bedtime Prayers with Goodnight Kisses, Climbing trees, Getting an Ice Cream off the Ice Cream Truck, A million mosquito bites and sticky fingers... Jumping down the steps, jumping on the bed, Pillow fights.... Running till you were out of breath, Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt, Being tired from "just playing ".... Your first crush..... Rainy days at school meant playing "Heads up - 7Up" in the class room.
Remember that??????
I'm not finished yet....
Kool-aid was the drink of summer, Riding your friends on your handle bars, Wearing your new shoes on the first day of school, Class Field Trips, When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids got there. When a quarter seemed like a fair allowance, and another quarter a miracle. When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries, and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it. When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives , but it wasn't because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, the evils of the world, etc.... Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! And some of us are still afraid of em! ! !
Didn't that feel good??? Just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that! There's nothing like the good old days! They were good then, and they're good now when we think about them.
I want to go back to the time when............ Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo" Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "do over!" "Race issue"; meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly" Catching fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening. It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends. Being old, referred to anyone over 20. The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties & your invisible "cootie shot" got rid of em... Nobody was prettier than Mom. Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better. It was a big deal to finally be tall enough to ride the "big people" rides at the amusement park. Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true. Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare" Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles. The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team. Water balloons were the ultimate weapon. Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.
If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED! ! !!
I hope I didn't just date myself. |

Glad you are enjoying it! Have you heard much of Tom Waits before? I love showing him to people that are used to hearing pop singers...They get really confused. I love his voice, and him and Kathleen Brennan (His wife) make a great songwritting team. |
