I'll second that one. I'm also really into the classics: Billie Holiday, Louie Armstrong |

In addition to those above, I really dig Sonny Stit and Hank Mobley on sax, they both have some great ideas when soloing. For trumpet Clifford Brown is awesome, and for guitar I love listening to Grant Green, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, and George Benson when he's doing jazz. JJ Johnson is a great trombonist to check too. |

I haven't read that about Bela but I can see it. Martino's style is a constant sixteenth note/double time feel. He has a tremendous feel for time with his picking hand that's like no other. "El Hombre" is Martino's first cd as a leader back in the 70's I think (maybe earlier) and it's a great disc to pick up. |

I definitely second Chick Corea for pianist.
I like Wes Montgomery for guitarist myself. |

Kofi is oteil's brother that is just as good as him, and they end up playing together some. Kofi is his older brother and according to oteil, the more talented one. oteil has also said that kofi has perfect pitch, from misreading an assignment in a school band class(something along the lines of memorizing the circle of fifths, and kofi thought the teacher meant the pitches...)
I have heard some george benson, but not enough to really label him one of my fav. he def. has a smooth sound tho. I haven't heard wes montegomery yet too. |

Benson is an awesome guitar player with great chops and great ideas. He mostly does pop music nowadays out of his own choice, which leaves a lot of jazz fans and jazz guitarists in lament due to his great command in the realm of jazz.
As for Wes, he's a straight-forward kind of player that is a little bit before most of the other big names in jazz. You can hear a lot of Wes's influence in Benson's playing, and, like Benson, also did a lot of the pop music thing. Wes himself takes after an even older cat named Charlie Christianson who played a major part in the invention of the electric guitar.
(I'm a jazz guitar major in college if I haven't made it obvious enough yet ) |

So many good musicians in the Jazz genre. Definitely hard to pick favorites for all the categories. |
