Anyone else hate this holiday as much as I do???? In my whole life I can't remember one good Valentine's Day.....not that I remember all bad ones, but geeze it is a commercial holiday set up to spend money.
I always dread going to pick out a card.....where do you find the ones that say, I don't know how I feel about you?????
I guess I am just getting tired of all the holidays and the added pressure they bring. Geeze, other than Christmas and birthdays do I really need the added stress?????
If I love someone, don't you think it is nicer to tell the person or do something special for the person when they least expect it? And what is with the price of cards????
I would rather buy my husband a book than a card! They are about the same price these days.
I spent almost an hour in the card shop and only bought one Valentines card....for my parents. Go figure! |

PJK I love your feelings about this!
I think when you force people to be romantic it just back-fires.... For example, last year for the "holiday" my boyfriend (of the time) cleaned our apartment and was going to cook dinner. Of course, he forgot some of the food needed, so I (!!) had to go to the store to buy it.... On the way back, my car got egged, so I just dropped off the stuff then left again to go wash my car. Now my two other roommates didn't have girlfriends on that particular day, so they were doing their own celebrating. By the time I got back, completely pissed off about my car... my boyfriend and roommates were drunk, stoned, and watching porn.... What a great Valentines Day, gathering around the TV, watching "Sex Ads", eating the left over heart-shaped pancakes I had made that morning....
No wonder I am so thrilled about my solitude this year!

I hate it more than any of you can imagine. Valentine's Day also happens to be my birthday, and I've only had a girlfriend on that day once.
Looks like I'll be going to the strip club with roses again this year. |

Here is my long diatribe about holidays, celebrations, etc etc etc.
I stopped celebrating my b-day when I was 5. TOO MUCH STRESS! I would get presents from people on my b-day when the rest of the year they didn't get me anything. Was this present bought for me because of a sincere love for me and the day of my birth? Or was it bought out of some guilt inspired requirement to supply me with a present on by b-day? I couldn't stop to figure it out. I just knew that I felt guilty all these people giving me presents when they HAD TOO. I started to feel like I would rather recieve a gift when someone felt like getting me something, not when the HAD to get me something. I in turn have treated gift giving the same way. I do not get people "Xmas" presents, I get them a present when I see something I think they would like. Whether that be on their b-day or 6 months from them. My feeling is that we should be thinking about the ones we love ALL the TIMe, not just when "the day" requires it. That mentality sucks to me. Doesn't a present mean a whole lot more when it comes out of the blue, unexpectedly? It is a wonderful feeling knowing someone was thinking about you for no apparent reason. It has taken friends and family along TIMe to get used to this approach to gift giving, but in the long run, I think it goes alot further to telling someone that I am ALWAYS thinking about them, not just thinking about them when I have to.
There is also a sensible side to this approach. How many TIMes have you gotten a b-day present or a Xmas present that just didn't seem like they really got you something that was really for you? Well, with my approach, no more last minute rushing around buying things for folks they won't really like. I buy things for people WHEN I find them or see something I think they will really dig. The presents you give end up being more to the persons liking, because you didn't rush around and just buy them anything because you need to find something before the deadline and just ended up buying them whatever to just get it over with, and the presents you recieve are generally things you find more endearing and special to you because they aren't last minute purchases done under the pressures of finding something before the deadline. It all makes sense really. And shouldn't we be thinking about the ones we love all the TIMe, not just at Xmas, b-day or whatever holiday the powers that be tell us to BUY for our loved ones? It's just common sense if you ask me. |

Now see... that's amazing. Your parents must have been so happy around Christmas TIMe when Santa didn't have to go over board.... At 5, I think I requested the entire Toys R Us store... hell, i still do.... |

Therippa, sorry to hear that! Don't worry, love will find it's way to you, it just doesn't go by the calendar. Also may I add a Happy "early" Birthday!
I was due to have twins on Valentines Day,(many years ago) but I ended up miscarrying my sweet precious babies, but I doubt that they would have been born on that day anyway.
Fluffy, I love how you think! I have always felt like that, well I can't say I didn't like getting birthday presents when I was little, I did but my parents didn't go overboard and with 5 kids in the family we didn't get much, usually clothes.
I really hate Christmas because of all the rush to buy, buy, buy and when I don't know what to get someone and just feel obligated to get something I really feel bad. I think a stress free Christmas would be soooo nice!
Getting presents or special surprises from people at unexpected TIMes is much better, I agree! And it feels so much better when you see something that is just perfect for someone you care about and you surprise them with it! That way it really is about the thought and not the money. (I hate when people think gifts have to cost X amt of dollars to be good!)

When I get presents, my parents make sure that it's soemthing FOR me. They are the best gift buyers, but I always feel very guilty. I hate it when they spend $300 on a guitar for me. But, I see it like this: It'll last me forever, and music is my life...so why the hell not? |

aye i hear you VWF. the thing ican't stand is when you HAVE to celebrate it...or pseudo-celebrate it. lemme explain
my 10 period english class we have this teacher who is retiring next year. somTIMes she is a bitch and somTIMes not. anyway she gave us slips of paper and we have to put the person's name on it with a compliment of somesort and sign our name. then we have to get them some candy or somthin' and stick it on his/her desk. now this woulsd be acceptable if i was 2 but i'm in friggin' 9th grade here folks. 15 years olde. if i'm going to give them a compliment then i'll tell the person. also if we don't "celebrate" this little good-tyde thing then we can got to a study hall and do work that won't help our grades. |

Way to go VWF!!!! For your sake I hope it is a great Valentine's Day!
My husband gave me a gushy card and showered me with gifts!!! A day early!!!! What's up with this?????? I don't know how I feel because we usually don't do this for Valentines Day and all I got him is a card! Now I have to go out after work tomorrow and buy something for him! I really did appreciate everything, but it put me in an awkward position. I am sorry, I really HATE this stupid holiday!!!!! |

I had classes from 9 AM to 4 PM, work from 5PM to 9PM, and then I went to bed at 9:30. Best Valentine's Day ever. Oh yeah, I took a Thermodynamics test on that day, and I got a 75%. |
