Check this guy out - he plays locally in Kansas, and I'm trying to spread the word because he has written some killer stuff! He has a very unique style that I think you'll all like, I just met him on yahoo! one day but his stuff blew me away
http://www.andymckee.com/
Check out the song Common Ground - that's my personal favorite, the video of Drifting is also pretty awesome
Hope you all like it! Let me know what you think |

I did check out the site and was very interested, but as everyone on the board knows, my computer skills are sub-par. In fact, the only thing worse than my computer skills is my computer. HEHE It can't handle the download. It would most likely crash. One day when I get my new computer, I would love to check them out. That is why I always ask if people can send me burned copies of their stuff, because I can't listen to anything that requires downloading. Hell, my computer won't even play a CD in CD drive. It really sucks. If you can make me a CD of the recordings, I would love to listen to him. Based on what I read, I would even buy a CD by him without even hearing him first, but I'm a risk taker like that. HEHE |

Fluffy -
You can actually order his CD on his site, but I sent him the link to this thread and told him who you were, so hopefully he'll stop by and maybe talk to you about sending a CD with some of the videos on it as well. I don't know the guy personally, I just happened to hear him playing in a yahoo chat room one day and was blown away by how good and original I thought his songs were and he seems like a really humble, nice dude. I know he only plays in Kansas, but I thought opening for Tim might give him a good opportunity to spread his music around a bit more to a crowd that would probably love it.
How would one go about becoming the opener for Tim's next tour? Does Tim pick them himself?

Hey guys. Chris told me he's been trying to spread the word about me a little. Thanks Chris, I've managed to sell some CD's due to your efforts!
Fluffy, if you are interested I can send you a CD and a copy of a video of me playing and doing an interview kind of thing. I just got it yesterday. It's got the three songs that are on my website which will actually be on my next CD. Shoot me an email if you would like to talk about it more!
Take care |

Hey theres an awesome dvd out with victor wooten and his brother i forgot his name... it is unbelievable, victor is one of the best bassists around, him and carter from dmb have a cool dvd out too. but victor's brother plays this insane slap style and he uses hair scrunchies to mute strings and stuff. Some say his brother is homeless too but i think he just looks that way, lol but yea check it out if you want to see something cool they have a "thump off" hehe heres the link to that dvd incase u want to buy it http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005RDSK/qid=1039223273/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/104-9543202-6467165?v=glance&s=dvd |

Great guitar player. It's awesome to see someone who can do stuff with so much substance without having to resort to effects. I could definitely see this guy opening for Tim. I have to recommend his guitar (a Guild F47RCE) to ANYONE. It's definitely the best-playing instrument I've ever played. A bit on the expensive side, though, I think. |

Hey, now i KNOW that somebody on this thread knows Michael Hedges' music... Andy, what's your favorite by MH? Ever recorded any covers of his stuff? I got into this style of playing this summer, and since I have concentrated exclusively on it, I have lost a lot of my conventional skill! I can barely play songs like flourescence or As Far as We Can See anymore because my hands just arent used to holding down notes with the left and plucking with the right. This kinda music is fun though, because of the reaction you get from crowds. I'll be working on a cd in january - anybody interested? sorry that I don't have anything to DL, but if any of you are ever around in DE, I'll let ya know when I play. Andy - you rock, man. I'd like to see what you coudl do with "aerial boundaries" or "because it's there." |

Thanks Jemez. My favorite Michael Hedges album would have to be Aerial Boundaries, but I love them all. I never have recorded any versions of me playing his stuff but I do know a few of his tunes; Ragamuffin, Because It's There, The Naked Stalk, Theme From HATARI!... maybe a few others. There was no one as revolutionary on how to play the guitar as Michael and what is unfortunate, is that a lot of guitarists have no idea who he was. If anyone here hasn't heard Michael Hedges, go buy Aerial Boundaries! Today! |

Andy -
I took your advice a few weeks ago and picked up Aerial Boundaries, and while I enjoyed listening to it, I've enjoyed your album MUCH more. I'd have to say it's one of my favorite albums that I've bought this year, so thank you again and to any of you that enjoyed listening to the few tunes he has on his website, you should definitely order his album because it's well worth it!
Thanks again, and Fluffy - you need to bring him on tour with you guys!!!

cheers to andy again... i'm gonna order the cd. Do you think you'd actually be up for an outside-of-kansas tour? Ragamuffin definitely rocks. I sometimes start that one out and then go into 'aerial boundaries' since both songs have the top four strings in unision tunings. Does anybody else on the board play stuff like this? Andy, how much did you find that harp guitar for? the only one i have ever seen on sale was at this place in Maine for 4 thousand dollars. I wonder if it's worth it to be able to play Because It's There. email me plz.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to give everyone the heads up if they didn't already know...Andy McKee released his new album Dreamcatcher recently, and it's another awesome solo-acoustic album. If you don't already own it, I HIGHLY recommend checking it out as it's just as good if not better than his last release. You can order it here http://www.andymckee.com/

Go listen to some Micheal Hedges if you want to see somebody look at acoustic differently. All these Trace Bundy, Keller Williams and all the others are just wanna be hoes.
This also makes me realize why I like Tim so much. I've always loved nut-grabbing rock and roll, and while stuff like this has its time and its place theres a certain rock quota I need to fill everyday. Tim is like a caged animal, the cage being the acoustic guitar. It's not as restrictive as a cage, as he hops outside it quite frequently, but it's a crucial part of why I like his playing. |

Yeah I agree with HRW. Michael hedges helped some of us see what we had inside of us all along. I don't wanna be Hedges. I am myself and I appreciate Hedges's music rather than emulate it. I'm sure Andy, Trace, Keller, Dexter (Brank), Billy Mclaughlin, Don Ross and the others would all say the same. Odds are, we have al written a song in tribute of MH, but that's where it ends. Music is an art of synthesizing influence with creativity. Since Michael was SO influential, people automatically group flashy guitarists in with him even though they might have totally different sounds. You've just got to listen more carefully. |

Well eat shit for taking me seriously. I have just as much respect for talented guitarists as you do, I just don't button my asshole up about it. I don't mean this offensively, but if you truely want to call me out for being an idiot I'd love to be able to have a nice objective, somewhat sarcastic conversation with you, instead of all this nahhhhsty name calling. Granted my tone was harsh and probably stinged some type of "you damn disrespectful bastard" nerve in your interpretation of what I said, and I don't mean for this to be taken cockily but I'm about 9 steps ahead of you in terms of being self-aware of such things.
I would only say such a thing because one or two people might get a laugh out of it. Yes there's some truth to them being wanna be hoes, but there's also the flipside to that, seeing as that they are actually successful which obviously implies that they have some type of merit other than being a complete Micheal Hedges clone.
Music made by an individual is merely a rearrangement of his/her influences, everybody is like this; its the ones who add their own "personal touch" to some rearrangement that are successful. |

"button my asshole up?" i can honestly say that's the first time i've heard that. excellent. but i always read things like "don't take this cockily" and "no offfense." just because you preface statements with these doesn't make them any less offensive or cocky. if you really wanted them to sound less offensive or cocky, you'd word them accordingly. this is a message board after all and it's not as though you don't have a minute to think about your words. if you want to be offensive, if you want to be arrogant, then just come right out and do it. don't hide behind disclaimers like "i don't mean to be offensive." what's the point? "ha ha, i said 'no offense.' now you can't be angry with me." MERH.
i love michael hedges as much as the next guy, but to call this group of instrumental guitarists rip offs of him absurd. that's like saying "oh, well such-and-such movie or book is a total rip off of lord of the rings." well of course they're all borrowing. tolkien was a genre defining author just like hedges was a genre defining guitarist. if you're not borrowing at least a little from him, chances are you're not doing the same genre of music. |

It's implied humor, and if you want to read everything literally and interpret it in this homosexualistic fashion, that's fine. I don't word things accordingly on purpose, its less funny. In fact, its so much less funny nobody enjoys reading it now. Thanks. |

don't try to pass it off as humor. if you really thought that "no offense" added some kind of humor value to anything, i have to wonder if you're even vaguely familiar with the concept of humor. either you don't know what it is, or you're just really bad at it. either way, nice job failing. |
