I probably shouldn't post this but I am soooo happy I can't contain myself. I was getting ready to sign off and get to bed and I got an e-mail from John @buckinghammusic which is where I am going to purchase my Tabla from. I haven't spoken to him on line for about a month or more. Well tonight he sent me a list of people who can teach me to play!!!!! Wohooooooo!!!!!!
I know this doesn't thrill anyone....but I don't care because I am on cloud 9 right now!!!! You have no idea how much I want to play this instrument!!!!

Not only do I not have any idea how much you want to play this instrument...I do not have any idea what this instrument is. Sorry. But I am glad you got the hook up and I'm glad you'll get to learn this thingie. Whenever I hear you talking about this, I'm reminded of some scifi book (the title escapes me right now, but I think it might have been in the Foundation series...) where this instrument was held in both hands like you would hold a basketball and sound was made by where you held it... Light was also emitted and the sensory experience was unparalleled. One user used it to paralyze some captivators and allow himself and friends to be free...Ah hell, anyone know what book this is? It's going to drive me nuts.

Thanks Jason...don't know what book you are refering to. If you want to see a Tabla go to www.indianmusicals.com I think its listed under percussion. Tablas are drums....the most amazing sounds come from them. Now I really have to go to bed, because I have had less than 8 hours sleep in the past 2 days.
Hope you can think of that book, I don't want to be responsible for driving you nuts hehehe |

Congrats Pam!!! Have you heard Zakir Hussain play with John McLaughlin? There's this one song in particular called The Wish from Remember Shakti that just blows me away. A good tabla player not only plays fast, but you can actually hear some melody in what they're doing.
A little bit about tablas... A Tabla set consists of two drums; a tabla (a treble right hand drum), and a baya (bass left hand drum). The tabla may be made from several types of hardwood. The best Tablas are made from Rosewood or Shishum. The best Bayas are made from copper which gives the most powerful sound, and the more economical bayas are made from brass. Both of these bayas are nickel plated. Less common are clay and wood Bayas. Both Tabla and Baya heads are made from layered goat skin, which is attached with leather straps, and weighted with a black patch (called the gob),which is made primarily of iron oxide and rice paste. This gives the characteristic sound. They are tuned to definite pitches.

What to do? I got another e-mail from John at Buckingham music and he is getting in 10 AA tabla's this week! If I spend the $500 plus for the Tabla, Case shipping and insurance then the trip to Colorado looks bleak for me.
My husband will have no problem with me buying the Tabla, but the trip might me another story.
I always get what I want, but before that sounds like I am a spoiled selfish bitch, know that my wants are few and I don't expect them to be handed to me on a silver platter, I am willing to work for them.
I need a vacation so desparately, but as weird as it sounds I get the chills just looking at the Tabla! I so love that instrument!!!! So I know a lot of my frustrations will be relieved if I get the Tabla and spend the hours practicing.
I am going to be taking some computer courses at a local college in Jan. but maybe I could squeeze in a part-time job too?

| Sounds like the Tablas will bring the least stress to your life, and as anyone will tell you, the less stress the better. I would hate for you to sink a bunch a money into the CO excursion for it to bring you more grief and not the peace that you need and will obviously get from the Tablas. Of course thats just my opinion, I could be wrong. |

Evergreen and Jay, thanks for the support. I am going to go with the Tablas, partly because I am so amazed and facinated by them, but more so because if I go to Colorado it would not be with my husbands blessing and I would be forced to face something I am just not ready to handle at this TIMe.
It wasn't easy to decide this, especially since I spent a lot of time last night looking into Avon and the surrounding area. I completely fell in love with that village! It all felt so right and I could see it all happening in my mind! (One of the downfalls of being a dreamer!) The thought of meeting Evergreen and Jason and whoever else came to the show meant a lot to me. I do need a vacation but given certain things going on in my life right now, Fluffy is right....it could end up being more stress than fun.
This is the third TIM show I tried to get to and couldn't for whatever reason, first the Philly one, then the Annapolis one and now this. Since things happen in 3's maybe next time it will work out?
At least I got to see him in Trenton. I am so thankful for that!
My husband just got a summons for Federal jury duty today. (Damn saying about the mail is true....neither snow or sleet...and we have 10 inches as of now.) Anyway, my husband doesn't get paid if he doesn't go to work and he will have to miss 2 days for jury duty and more if he get's on a case and they only pay $40 a day minus taxes! I guess they don't get it that it could hurt people finacially! So all the more reason not to take on a trip at this TIMe. |

| Sounds like it was the WISE decision, albiet HARD, but the WISE decision. There will be other TR shows, so it's not like this was your only chance. So as I always say, "KEEP THE FAITH", it will happen. Besides, a TR show should be positive, uplifting, happy experience, not one that brings any misery and suffering. That is not what music is all about. But hell, you know that. MUSIC WILL SET YOU FREE!! |

I had a horrible nightmare once that I lost my hearing and the thing that upset me most was that I was afraid I would forget the words and tunes to the many songs I love sooo much and would not be able to refresh my memory. I woke up in a sweat after that one it scared me so much!
Now everytime I start to feel sorry for myself I think of that and remember that things could always be worse! I am sooo thankful I can hear! |

Hey Dirtysloth, I never got to answer you. First it seems I am not the only one interested in the Tabla. I'd love to hear how you know so much about it, if you ever played them, etc.
I never heard of Zakir Hussain (at first I thought I did, but I was thinking of someone else) and I am really intereste in finding out more about him. Where did you hear about him from? Can I get the music at a store or amazon.com?????
So glad I am not the only one who find this instrument amazing! I fell in love with them at the Ravi Shankar concert I went to. I was so close to the stage and I could hear everything and watch all of the musicians hand movements as well. It wasn't the first time I had seen him perform but I was pretty far from the stage the last time. Anyway I knew the first time I heard them at this concert that I wanted to learn how to play them!
I bought a book on the fundamentals of the tabla and have been trying to read about it. Now that I have names of instructors I really feel as if this was meant to be.
Anything you could tell me about Tablas would be greatly appreciated!!!!

| I have a number of Zakir Hussain records. Unfortunately, they are vinyl records, so I haven't heard them in quite a while. They are really awesome though. I would suggest the one on ECM records. I can't remember the name and it might even be self-titled, but it is awesome. |

I got yet another e-mail from John and looks like I will be ordering my Tabla tonight or tomorrow. I might have them for Christmas...not that I really care when I get them as long as I do.

My Tabla still hasn't arrived, don't know how long it takes to ship it. I ordered some more books and a video as well and a box came today which I think might be them. Hope I wasn't too stupid having the Tabla shipped during the Christmas rush. I hope they are ok when I get them. Can't wait!!!! |

It still hasn't arrived yet, but just as well because I can't do much until after the holidays anyway.
I did get an e-mail today from a Tabla instructor. I am going to be taking lessons from him as soon as my Tabla arrives. I just hope I don't suck at it!!! I just love this instrument sooo much!!! I always wanted to play the drums but my parents said they were for boys! |
