This would probably be better suited for the Bela Fleck message boards, but I don't think there are any, so here it goes: Anybody know off the top of their heads what the standard banjo is tuned to? Some jerk ass told me once at a music store it was an open G chord, which maybe or may not be true. But sometimes at the music store I pretend to answer people's guitar questions when I don't know what the answer is, so he might have just turned around and screwed with me. So, what are the main 4 strings tuned to?

Yeah, G is most common. I have a "Acoustic Allstars" bootlegs from '88 with Fleck, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, etc., and whoever is on the mic made an impression of Bela... "How do you make a G?" I guess you just have to hear it. Trust me, it's funny.

Bela Fleck also tunes his banjo to open E for a song they do call Big Country. On the Video, Live At The Quick, he just sits there hitting the open strings, and it is really awesome. Great band, great bassist, it doesn't get better than Vic Wooten.

That's my favorite song by them. Is that a DVD?

Although not really TR related, I found this really good banjo tab of Big Country, like was previously mentioned in an open E tuning. I changed my guitar, but then I was kind of interested in playing it in standard. So I did some work, and moved some notes here and there, and this tab was born:

Béla Fleck - Big Country

B-------0-----0---------0-----0---------------------------------------------
G---------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-4---2---2-----2-----------2-----------------------------------------------
A-----------1-----4/7-7-----------------------------------------------------
E---0---------------------0-------------------------------------------------

Standard copy and paste in notepad to get it to look nice. A couple of notes might be an octave low or high, or one might play a note in a different spot, but that's your thing to move around.

JTR - where did you find the big country banjo tab? i actually do play banjo (amongst other instruments), so i'd be looking for the real banjo tab; your guitar transcription is great!

Why does banjohangout make me laugh? I don't know why...it just does. Nothing at all against banjo, just made my inner being laugh.

Thank you for posting that link! I've been playing banjo for a few months and been working on some Fleck stuff, but I couldn't find a decent tab, and it's hard as hell to tab out the shit he does.
