The most beautiful, full, and ecletic (spelling?) music, all on two CDs! I found it at Best Buy yesterday and snatched it as fast as I could get my grubby little hands on it! I had been looking for this double disc wonder for the past two weeks, already put in several orders, and here, as I stroll buy with a new CD player in hand, down the CD aisles, I say, "Ha, lets go see if they have some Tim stuff?" (most places don't even give him a marker) There was a marker, with Gossip on top, and right behind it, Sanctuary, under several layers of dust, it looked like no one had touched it since it had been first shelved. (sighhhhhhhh)

Now I listen to it Day and Night and am blown away! I love Barriers with all the full guitars. Intuition of a Child is a beautiful solo acoustic, and these are some of Tim's best vocals and lyrics! I love Below the Surface! And Ohm Ah Hum is so freakin amazing! For those of you who don't have this I lament for you, you must find this CD somehow! This is almost like an ID, but more refined, like a beautiful gem! Also the photography is amazing and so powerful! I almost think that someone made this CD to save their life, with the title Therapy and Liberation.

Is there any story behind this double disc masterpiece?

some good stuff on this album, yeah. I especialy enjoy My Shadow, Intuition Like A Child, and Beneath The Surface. Tims lyrics are really odd though.

I always wondered though, why he re-recorded Sanity for disc 2, after it was already released on Stream...

That's funny, I was just in a record store today myself, and in the USED section, there was SANCTUARY. I was floored. I didn't know how much it should cost (compared to new) so I didn't get it. Probably some disgruntled Dave fan not getting what he expected after Luther College.

Anyway, how much did you pay for yours? This one was about $19. Prob should have just gotten it.

Anywho. That's so true about getting Timmy in the record stores. I looked here (Oxford, a college town) and there was nothing, even at the store that caters to the non-pop crowd. I was kinda surprised.

yeah, that Luther College comment reminded me of this girl I know, she saw Tim expecting Dave to show up and Crash to be played. When she realized what was going on she said she couldnt stand it. then again, she doesnt like Stream off Luthor... Oh well, i guess its just not their thing.

My girlfriend actualy *bought* a few Timmy cds for me, and i was completely blown away. "No really honey, i can pay for them. which ones do you want?". I felt so bad, but i went home giggling like a schoolgirl cause that was the first time i ever threw in Stream and listened ot the whole thing.

by the way, this was in the NYC Virgin Megastore, so I kind of expected them to have stuff there, but was actualy surprised they caried most of tims albums, id say about 4 or 5.

I am going from memory here but I think Sanity on Sanctuary is a live version. I could be wrong. I will see if I can pry a story about this album out of Tim while we are on the road. Sanctuary is one of my fave Tim CDs because it is so eclectic. That is its charm, and he does not stick to 1 style. I flutters all over like a butterfly. Giving you a great overview of Tims many influences and styles. It is truly amazing.

Hey, You've made my day. Sanctuary has got to be my favorite Tim album. All the electric stuff kicks my butt, it's so energetic. The acoustic stuff is great too, thought I really like Stream and Gossip because of the fact that it is all single acoustic, no overdubs, etc.. but I love the stuff on the first disc, beneath the surface, its dead, form is empty, and my favorite, Bowl of the Altar. My band covers a few of those songs, and I've been meaning to TAB out the stuff I know from sanctuary's 1st disc. I love the last track of the second disc too, that "Three blind mice" thing is sweet!

Please tab all you can! I especially like all the multi guitar songs. And EnthuDMBiast, you should definitely pick it up if you can get it for 19$, i spent 25 for it new, and it was worth it! Oh every hard earned penny, no gas for my car this month!

I have sanctuary.

As far as those tabs, I know most of Beneath the Surface, It's Dead, Bowl of the Altar, and some of Hornet's Nest. I'm working on Bull also. I'm going to try to get some time to TAB what I know of all of those out.

Got Sancuary as well. Like both discs, but I mostly listen to the second one. Listen to Sacrifice all the time - love that song. Tim's got some great lyrics I think. One that comes to mind now, from On The Edge - "we will see, just as we are seeing/history, is it coming to a close?"

Ok, thanks everybody. Now that I've just ordered Nomadic Wavelength and Stream off Amazon, you guys tell me that Sanctuary is just simply an amazing album...I guess that's next on the list. When I have the money... In other words, not for a while.

But really, I saw a used copy for about $6 on amazon. That's cool. I've sold some stuff there myself.

But back to Sanctuary. Can someone give me a little of logistics about it? I mean is it mostly electric with mixing and whatnot or is it mostly acoustic? Or is it the album with one electric and one acoustic?

Anywho, I look forward to getting my two new albums, even if neither of them is Sanctuary...

Sanctuary is a double disc, as you know. The first disc is mostly all electric songs. In the CD booklet, it says all the instruments that are used on each track. I think for the most part, Tim laid down an electric rhythm track, and electric lead track, bass track, and drum machine/keyboard drums on most songs. I think that he played live drums on a few songs as well. Eight of the 11 songs on the first disc have a vocal sung by Tim as well. The last track of the first disc is called Sacrifice, and is solo acoustic guitar recorded live at Miller's Bar in Charlottesville VA on December 8, 1996 (along the lines of stuff on Gossip of the Neurons if you have that album). Tim also uses some cool "instruments" on the first disc, like ray guns, whirlee tubes, pan pipes and hand drums. He even utilizes tremolo microphone feedback on a song called Pet Rock.

The second disc is mostly straight acoustic. For drums on this disc, a lot of it is tribal sounding stuff, like congas, dumbek, different kinds of shakers, etc... and then over the percussion is an acoustic guitar part or two (rhythm&lead) There are two acoustic based songs that he sings on the 2nd disc, called My Shadow (a kick ass song) and On the Edge (heard played electric on Puke Matrix Live). The last song on disc 2 is called Calling the Earth to Witness, and is another one like stuff you may have heard on Gossip of the Neurons: Acoustic guitar and effects. It was recorded at the Prism Coffeehouse also in Charlottesville on January 11, 1997.

It says on the inside of the cover of the CD book: All songs written, arranged, and performed by Tim Reynolds, which I think is pretty damn cool.

Well anyway, hope I let you know somethin about Sanctuary. I'd have to say its up there as one of my favorite Tim albums. I love the electric stuff, and the Acoustic stuff is inspirational as always.

Sanctuary was the first Tim Reynolds CD I bought like 2 years ago.
It is still one of my favorites.

Yeah, sanctuary was my first Tim album too. I've always thought it was a kickass way to get into Tims solo stuff, because of the double electric/acoustic disc, best of both worlds. Tim's lyrics are cool.

My friend just picked up Sanctuary in Memphis for me, used for $18. So I get to hear it for the first time on Monday when I see her. BUt I did just get Nom Wave and Stream, my first two Tim albums, and I think Nom Wav is just amazing. Great music, from anyone's standpoint, and extremely technical and great from a musicians standpoint.

But I look forward to Sanctuary and being able to compare it to the other two I have.

I haven't gotten Sanctuary from my friend yet, but when we drive to New Orleans Monday, we'll get to listen to it in its entirety. That's super with me. I have to say, it will have to be a hell of an album to be as good as Nomadic Wavelength. That's a great one.

By the way, when you listen to Sanctuary, i'm guessing youll put in disc 1 first...and start on track 1...dont worry i am going somewhere with this....

The first song on disc 1 is called Threshold...its basically a lot of guitar noise, etc...not a "song" per se. Just wanted to let you know so when you hear this explosion of sound, and its maybe not your thing, you dont assume the whole album is like that (though im sure most people would just skip around anyway) but just wanted to let you know.

The album kicks ass though!!

I look forward to Sanctuary.

An interesting aside...A local dive here in Oxford, formerly known as "Dan Fax Market" has just changed it's name to "Sanctuary." I thought that was cool, and maybe a picture will follow sometime, so you guys can see it. But by the mood you all have described the album Sanctuary to have (eclectic, beautiful, etc.), I think the newly renovated restraunt should go nicely.

I finally got to listen to Sanctuary. Not critically, tho, just while I was driving for six hours. So I'm not sure about it yet. I think I still like Nomadic Wavelength better. That is just a great album.

And I think the Sanctuary restaraunt will not be playing the album
. No appreciation for music.

Yeah I like Nomadic Wavelength better as well, but for what Sanctuary is, it is Earth Moving! I've played it for people who have never heard anything, ANYTHING, like it before. To hear it for the first time is like hearing music for the first time. It is just amazing! Almost like a religious moment. I know personally I have never heard lyrics like those from Tim whether it be solo or TR3, also the way he sings them just adds to it! Tim is amazing!

I thought everyone might like to know that Sanctuary and Live Puke Matrix are keeping up with the acoustic albums sales-wise on this tour. That is the first time. Astral Projection is even making a good showing. Sanctuary has actually outsold all the other titles on a couple of nites. I really think the addition of the Baritone and SG are helping spread Tim's electric side to a wider audience and that is awesome. His styles are quite different but are both equally as AMAZING. I am so glad people are starting to discover that Tim is more than just and acoustic God and starting to see him more as a Guitar god. Just my 2 cents.

We got to talking about Sanctuary in the van the other day and I thought I would pass on Tim's comments surrounding the recording of that album. He had been working with Dave alot at the time and found himself with some money and the desire to work out some of his own demons. It originally started as 2 seperate albums but as he worked at on it, he decided he could work it all into one cohesive project. It was going to be an electric record and a seperate acoustic record but as he worked he felt it was more representative of where he was at at the time as 1 piece instead of 2 seperate pieces. It was really the 1st time he had "rocked out" on his own, and he really liked it. He still considers one of his best works, one of his most expressive. He had been writing alot of poetry prior to that and most of his previous music had been vocal-less. So he finally got to put words to his music. He still really loves the lyrics on that album, although he even concedes that the are a little bizarre. But hey, Thats TIM!!!

I agree, Tim really does rock out on this album. I like others better, but I dig the NIN/Pantera sounding stuff in certain moods, so it is good for that. And I'm glad that Tim got to get the demons out, and I think I can tell into which songs he put them. Ha. But really, Sanctuary is a fabulous album.

The lyrics are a little bizarre, but hey, I think they match the music to a tee, so it's all good.

I really like everything on this album. Even "It's Time" which a lot of people would probably think was a tad odd, I think it rocks! And I love Calling the Earth To Witness at the end of Disc 2.

My band has been playing a few songs off of Sanctuary actually; Beneath the Surface, It's Dead, Hornet's Nest and Bowl of the Alter. I've been trying to find some time to TAB out those songs. Hopefully I'll get around to it soon.
